When Yo! MTV Raps debuted in 1988, it brought rap and hip-hop to the masses and, more importantly, the record-buying suburbs, exposing the genre to kids who would otherwise have no clue about artists like Salt ‘n Pepa, KRS-One, Eric. B & Rakim and EPMD. Its influence in bringing light to this genre cannot be overstated.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the ground-breaking show, an all-star concert featuring some of the shows most iconic artists will take place at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center on June 1. Artists including Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Flavor Flav of Public Enemy, Melle Mel & the Furious Five, the Pharcyde, Brand Nubian, Onyx, Black Sheep and Kid Capri with regular show hosts Fab 5 Freddy, T-Money, Ed Lover and Doctor Dré on hand to keep the show moving. The show will also include tribute videos from Eminem, Redman and Method Man.
DJ Skribble, one of the show’s co-producers explained the importance of Yo! MTV Raps. “The actual star of the show is the Yo! MTV Raps brand and all the iconic groups that either started their career or got their mainstream light through that show,” said Skribble. “So many people from my age group, we lived and died by that show.”
Tickets to the Yo! MTV Raps: 30th Anniversary Experience will go on sale Saturday, April 21st at 12 p.m.
