Innocent Man Arrested, Jailed for Eating Breakfast at Burger King While Being Homeless

Boston – In late 2015, a homeless man named Emory Ellis was jailed after he tried to make a purchase at a local Burger King. He approached the counter and attempted to buy breakfast with a $10 bill. The cashier thought the currency looked fake, and called police. Instead of verifying whether or not the money was fake, police apparently assumed it was, and arrested Ellis.

Because Ellis was on probation, the arrest violated the terms of his release and he was booked back into jail where he spent the next three months. It took that long before prosecutors realized the money was actually real and ordered his release in early 2016. Now Ellis is suing Burger King for discriminating against him based on his external appearances.

Ellis’ attorney, Justin Drechsler, said he believes Ellis was discriminated against because he is a poor Black man, and he insisted that a rich White man would never have endured such humiliation.

“A person like me would’ve gotten an apology, but a person like Emory somehow finds his way in handcuffs for trying to pay for his breakfast with real money,” Drechsler said.

According to a report from SFGate, Ellis’ misery did not end after he was refused breakfast and arrested:

Ellis was arrested in November 2015 and charged with forgery of a bank note. His arrest triggered a probation violation and he was held without bail until his final probation violation hearing, according to the lawsuit. He wasn’t released from jail until February 2016, when prosecutors dropped the forgery charge after the Secret Service concluded Ellis’ bill was real, the lawsuit says.

Ellis is now seeking $950,000 in damages from Burger King, which told the press it will not tolerate discrimination of any kind. The 37-year-old man would likely still be in jail had the Secret Service not confirmed the currency’s legitimacy. His lawyer said it is a travesty of justice. “Nobody deserves to be treated the way that Emory was treated,” Drechsler said.

Ellis’ story highlights several talking points demonstrating precisely what is wrong with modern day policing, the judicial system in the United States, and the way society treats the homeless.

Any cashier or law enforcement officer worth his weight in salt could have quickly visited the federal reserve’s website on how to determine if a currency is fake. That didn’t happen. Equally disturbing is the fact the man was held without bail. Ellis, being homeless, should have been allowed to go to his street corner and wait for a full investigation to have been completed before being arrested, especially since it was not conclusive that the bill was not counterfeit. But most disturbing of the allegations is the fact Ellis was left imprisoned a full three months before authorities learned what they could have discovered on the spot.

The bill was real, a man was arrested, his probation was violated, and he was forced to spend a quarter of a year before anyone seemed to care. Ellis is not alone. Thousands of Americans have been accused of crimes, arrested, and jailed, without a speedy trial.

As The Free Thought Project has reported, Americans who are homeless routinely face abuse from police, and they are often targeted, harassed and even arrested simply because of their homeless status. The system is broken and must be fixed.

Trump Accidentally Described U.S. Foreign Policy While Trying to Slam Iran

Daily Bell–U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the United States is officially walking away from the 2015 Iranian nuclear accord, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

As Anti-Media has already outlined, it appears that right from the get-go, it was the United States that implemented this agreement in bad faith — not Iran. To put it bluntly, the United States is the only party that has violated its terms. In light of this harsh truth, is it Iran or the United States that poses a threat to global stability?

In taking this drastic step, the United States has certainly demonstrated its schizophrenic approach to global affairs and effectively shown its true colors to the world. According to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, sanctions will be re-imposed on Iran to punish Iran for the following:

  1.       Iran’s status as the world’s largest state sponsor of terror;
  2.       Its use of ballistic missiles against American allies;
  3.       Its support for the brutal Assad regime in Syria;
  4.       Its human rights violations against its own people;
  5.       Its abuses of the international financial system.

The first of these claims is completely untrue. Iran spends very little on military-related affairs compared to the United States and its regional allies, Saudi Arabia and Israel. Saudi Arabia has openly confirmed it spread the ideology of Wahhabism — the same sect of Islam as ISIS — across the world at the behest of its Western allies. The U.S. actively supported the precursor to al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan with Saudi assistance in order to confront the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The U.S. continues a similar policy of supporting Sunni jihadists even to this day.

Iran has no such history. Iran’s proxies, like Hezbollah, are in the business of fighting ISIS. In fact, they are the most heavily engaged entities fighting against ISIS on the ground in Syria. Not once have we seen a report that says ISIS has been found to be carrying Iranian weapons. In contrast, reports that show ISIS have managed to obtain American weapons are numerous.

The second claim above is also ludicrously unprovable. We can only document Iran using missiles on one occasion in recent history: during a strike that took place in Syria pursuant to its defense pact arrangements with the Syrian government in response to an ISIS-inspired attack that took place on Iranian soil. Unless Syria is an ally of the U.S. government, this claim against Iran attacking U.S. allies is also completely false. That being said, the idea that the Iranian missiles took out U.S. allies on the ground, which were actually ISIS and al-Qaeda affiliated organizations, is actually somewhat believable.

But what about Yemen? Iran is supplying missiles to the so-called Houthi rebels in Yemen to attack Saudi Arabia, right? This has not even been remotely proven outside of a grandiose propaganda performance from U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley. Compared to Saudi Arabia and the United States, the Iranian war machine is relatively restrained.

In fact, it is the United States that uses sophisticated missiles on Iranian allies without any discernible legal basis and is also heavily bombing almost all of the countries surrounding Iran at any given time.

Iranian support for the “brutal Assad regime in Syria” would hold water if the U.S. didn’t openly support some of the worst dictatorships in the world, including Saudi Arabia. How many people reading this article are aware that the Indonesian military – a longtime U.S. ally – just openly shot down a parishioner standing on the front porch of his church in Papua? Is the Indonesian military under scrutiny for its crackdown over Papua?

While the Iranian government is certainly repressive — and also the result of U.S. meddling in the country’s domestic affairs — factions of the U.S. government, too, have committed human rights abuses against their own people, as well as civilians around the world.

The list goes on and on. To those of us who aren’t swamped in MAGA propaganda, it sounds a lot like the United States is criticizing itself more than it is criticizing Iran, which despite its flaws, has actually abided by the terms of the JCPOA in good faith, as confirmed by Trump’s own State Department and Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

Iran isn’t the unstable threat to international security. In fact, the evidence suggests it is the United States that really deserves that title. If the United States were genuine in its bid to deter illegal aggression and protect human rights, it would impose sanctions on itself, invading and bombing its own government back into the Stone Age.

But let’s not get too hopeful.

5 Major Stories Americans Missed While Obsessing Over Yanny, Laurel Soundbite

This week, a single soundbite made up of nonsensical words, took the internet by storm as playing it made some people hear the word “yanny” while others heard the word “laurel.”

The clip was a play on frequencies which sparked debate and nearly broke the internet as people began arguing over what they were hearing. While the phenomenon of people hearing two different words listening to the same audio is quite interesting, the explanation is actually simple.

If hear “laurel” in the above soundbite then your ears tend to pick up on low frequencies. If you hear “yanny,” then your ears pick up on the higher frequencies.

Video game developer Dylan Bennett made the following graphical representation illustrating exactly what is going on here:

This is certainly fascinating and worthy of discussion, while it went viral, however, there were multiple other stories that were swept to the wayside which actually have an impact on the lives of people across the planet. To make sure they don’t get ignored as the internet debates “yanny” and “laurel,” the Free Thought Project has put together a list of five major stories currently being overshadowed by this soundbite.

1. US State Passes Law Defining Any Criticism of Israel as ‘Anti-Semitic’ Just As They Kill 60 Civilians

South Carolina will become the first state to legally define criticism of Israel as “anti-Semitism” when a new measure goes into effect on July 1, targeting public schools and universities.

As can be determined by the long list of ways in which South Carolina will now define “anti-Semitism,” individuals will be forced to tiptoe around a legitimate subject, and expressing an opinion that is no longer considered politically correct can now be legally used against them.

Calling out this bill is not antisemitic, it is pro free speech. Criticizing the Israeli government as well as any other government is the right and duty of all free humanity. Just as TFTP advocates for the freedom of Americans, we advocate for the freedom of Israelis and the Palestinians. Only through discussion and peaceful criticism will peace ever be achieved.

2. Innocent Couple Raided by Cops for Facebook Post of LEGAL Morel Mushrooms

Last week, John Garrison and his girlfriend Hope went foraging the mountains for some morel mushrooms. Garrison was so excited that they had found a bunch of them, that he posted a photo on Facebook of he and Hope’s bounty along with his plans to “sautee them with brown sugar and cinnamon and see how that turns out.”

Illustrating the horrid effects of both the drug war and the police state, within hours of the post, Garrison’s apartment was raided by police.

“We had just finished eating the Morels we found today and heard a knock on the door. A police officer and an RA were standing outside. We let them in and as soon as the police officer walked in he asked us why we were eating mushrooms and posting about it online. He thought he was on the biggest bust of his career thinking we were having a magic mushroom party before I explained to him that Morels are a native choice edible mushroom similar to truffles,” explained Garrison.

Equally as troubling as cops raiding your apartment over Facebook posts for legal mushrooms is how they found out about it in the first place. Were police simply trolling Facebook that night and saw Garrison’s post? Or, did some “good citizen” do their due diligence and “see something and say something”?

3. DEA Knowingly Gave Addicts and Drug Dealers Licenses to Prescribe Opioids—Fueling the Epidemic

As thousands of Americans die each year from opioid overdoses, an independent investigation into the Drug Enforcement Agency’s conduct has found that it has been issuing controlled substance licenses to drug dealers, drug addicts, convicted felons and dead people, which is just one of the many things that have fueled the current crisis.

The investigation noted that in 2006, only 510,000 individuals and organizations held controlled substance licenses. As of March 2018, that number had increased drastically to 1.7 million licenses. The investigation showed that hundreds of dead people were issued license, thousands of convicted drug dealers incarcerated for felonies, and tens of thousands of others with no background checks.

If you want to look at who to blame for the opioid epidemic, you can start with the DEA.

4. As the media focused on the US embassy opening in Jerusalem, Israeli soldiers killed dozens of civilians, including children

The death toll in Gaza increased dramatically on Monday as Israeli Defense Forces opened fire on thousands of Palestinian civilians, killing 41 and injuring at least 1,700, and the United States’ response served as a reminder that if the governments in Iran, Syria, North Korea or Russia had done the same thing, the U.S. would be calling for a full-scale invasion right now.

It is hypocrisy at its finest, especially considering the fact that the U.S. has a history of cheering on and aiding protests against foreign governments. In fact, when the mainstream media began sharing reports of protests in Iran in December 2017, President Trump took to Twitter to cheer on the dissidents.

“The people are finally getting wise as to how their money and wealth is being stolen and squandered on terrorism,” Trump wrote, claiming that the United States was watching very closely for human rights violations!

The US reaction to Israel is the exact opposite. Instead of being praised for fighting against the people they consider their oppressors, they are all written off as “terrorists.”

5. Cops Kill Unarmed Naked Teacher and the Chief Defends It, Claiming ‘Being Naked Does Not Remove a Threat’

The family of Marcus-David L. Peters—an honors graduate and high school science teacher in Richmond, Va.—is asking for answers this week after a Richmond police officer shot and killed him while he was naked and unarmed.

Police say that Peters had previously struck another vehicle prior to crashing and then fled the scene. After a brief chase, he crashed and then ran naked up the northbound lane of I-95. Police claim Peters then charged an officer who had no other choice but to resort to deadly force against the naked and unarmed man who ‘charged the officer.’

Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham then seemingly justified the shooting, noting that “Our officers do not take the use of deadly force lightly. I think it’s important to remember that being naked does not remove a threat.”

Peters was an upstanding member of society who graduated cum laude from his high school in 2011 and then repeating that honor in 2016, graduating with a biology degree from VCU with honors. He was a beloved science teacher at Essex High School before being killed.

Peters was obviously in some sort of mental distress, whether it was drug related or health related was unclear. What is clear, however, is that police were unable to resolve a situation involving a naked unarmed man—without killing him—and society has lost an amazing person because of it.

16 Eco-Conscious Ways To Make A Lasting Difference While You’re Still Alive

by Aletheia Lunia Via LonerWolf

pathy. To me, it’s much more harmful than anger or bigotry.

When we’re apathetic, we don’t care about ourselves, other people, and the world around us. Apathy is a state of deadness, lack of concern, disinterest and absence of emotion. In fact, apathy is actually the antithesis of love, not hatred. Hatred, at least, still has some kind of emotional investment, unlike apathy.

It’s about time for a change. And that change can start with you.

Adopting a more eco-conscious way of living is the only way we can hope to reverse what we’ve done to the earth. Not only that, but eco-conscious living helps you to save money, improves your health and well-being, and inspires others to live more compassionately.

Easy-Peasy Guide to Living an Eco-Conscious Life

This year Sol and I are both aspiring to make more eco-conscious choices. Here are a few suggestions to help get you started if you’re interested in joining the ever-growing movement!

1 Never buy anything on impulse. Set a rule where you wait 24 hours before deciding to purchase something. Procrastination is a virtue when it comes to spending money!

2. Ladies, think about buying menstrual cups and cloth pads instead of disposable tampons and pads. The average woman uses 12,000 to 16,000 pads and tampons throughout her lifetime, contributing to 125 to 150kg of landfill – and that’s individually. Some women get a bit icky about reusable sanitary products (I was too), but not only do they help reduce pollution, they also save you loads of money. I recommend looking on for “cloth menstruation pads,” and researching menstruation cup brands like Diva, Juju and EvaCup (try FleurCup if you’re in Europe and excuse the 1990’s website). Menstruation cups and reusable pads can last up to 10 years if taken care of. Yes … you heard me!

3. Recycle everything you possibly can. Plastic, paper, glass, aluminium, cardboard, furniture, utensils, clothing … you name it! Recycle it. Think of it as re-birthing.

4. Whenever possible, try walking, bicycling, carpooling or taking public transport instead of driving a car. Many people find that when they do this, they don’t actually need to own a car at all.

5. Reduce, or if you can, completely abort eating meat and animal products. Did you know that animal agricultural accounts for 51% of ALL worldwide greenhouse gas emissions? Not only that, but going vegetarian or vegan helps to reduce the exploitation of animals, reduces the risk of cancer and other illnesses, improves overall health, and many other benefits. I recommend going slowly, perhaps starting with a vegetarian diet (including dairy and eggs), and then if your body permits it, slowly cut those out. Tips: I found that using a lot of Hemp powder (high in protein) and taking a Vitamin B12 supplement (converts food into energy) at first helped a lot. Not everyone thrives as a vegan, so be gentle on yourself. Cutting out some meat is better than cutting out nothing. Recommended films: Cowspiracy and Earthlings.

6. Replace chemical household cleaners (such as dishwashing liquid, laundry powder/detergent, window cleaner, toilet cleaner, etc.) with eco or biodegradable equivalents. These are friendlier on the environment and the ocean.

7. Support local farmers, especially those who use organic farming methods.

8. Find out what local government rebates and incentives are offered for using water, electricity and heating alternatives.

9. Ladies, buy organic and earth-friendly makeup or body products wherever possible. Avoid companies like Maybelline, Aveeno, Covergirl, Pantene, Almay, Estee Lauder and Revlon that all test on animals (find more unethical companies here). Instead, opt for companies such as Wet’n’Wild, Lush, Dr. Bronner’s and Aubrey Organics (find more here). Alternatively, do what I do and research DIY alternatives!

10. Landscape your garden with local and native plants which help wildlife to thrive, promoting biodiversity.

11. Compost your kitchen fruit and vegetable scraps and return them back to the earth. This saves you the trouble and cost of buying chemical-laded alternatives.

12. Instead of getting paper letters and statements in the mail all the time, sign up for e-letters that are delivered electronically via the internet to you instead. Not only will you save paper, but getting e-letters will make it easier for you to travel!

13. Stop using plastic bags every time you shop. Instead, buy reusable bags. (These often cost $1 each or below.)

14. Save energy by using cold wash, hanging your clothes on a clothesline, changing your light bulbs to energy efficient alternatives and turning off all switches for items you don’t use.

15. As of writing the world has 7.4 billion people, and by 2050 it’s predicted that the population will reach 9.6 billion. Overpopulation is largely responsible for the majority of issues on the earth. So ask yourself, “Do I really want to have another child?” Perhaps adoption is a better alternative.

City Slaps Burn Victim with Violation for Not Mowing Lawn While He Was in the Hospital

Dallas, Texas – A homeowner who was severely injured after a natural gas explosion destroyed the heating unit in his home and left him with second-degree burns, was threatened by the city that he could face fines because he was not able to mow his lawn while he was in the hospital.

The notice from the city stated that the homeowner had just 7 days “to remove litter, solid waste, and/or cut and remove weeds and grass.” If he did comply before the deadline, the city threatened to forcefully “remove the litter and/or cut and remove weeds and grass” at the homeowner’s expense.

However, the man and his family have not been allowed on their property for nearly 3 months, and the violation was posted on the same fence that already had a “WARNING: Keep Out!” sign barring residents from the premises.

Image via NBC 5

The homeowner was injured after the heating and AC unit in his home exploded in February, causing second-degree burns that left him recovering in the hospital, according to a report from NBC 5. Not only was he physically unable to mow his lawn, but he could not send anyone else to do it because he was not allowed to access his property and any “litter” that accumulated on it was left there by workers who were working on the gas lines.

The man’s house was one of several that were damaged by natural gas explosions, and homeowners complained that the company responsible, Atmos Energy, did nothing to alert residents about an ongoing gas leak. An entire neighborhood was evacuated and nearly 3,000 residents lost their gas service while Atmos has worked to repair gas lines.

One of the explosions killed a 12-year-old girl in her home. Her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that Atmos Energy’s “failure to maintain its gas lines as required by federal and state law led to the girl’s death and injuries to her family and neighbors.”

Now that the City of Dallas has slapped an injured homeowner with a violation notification for failing to maintain his lawn when he was unable to do so, it is only increasing the frustration felt by residents who have been displaced from their homes for months because of the faulty gas lines, and who are now accusing the city of only caring about making money off its citizens through ridiculous fines and fees.

Another case of a city attempting to extract money from homeowners, without taking their health into consideration, happened recently in St. Peters, Missouri, where an elderly couple is being forced by the city to plant turf grass in their yard or face significant fees, even though the wife is allergic to it.

Carl and Janice Duffner found themselves embroiled in a legal battle when they were reported to the city for failing to plant at least 50 percent turf grass on their property after the city passed a new ordinance. A U.S. District Judge ruled against them and stated that the Duffners can be forced to plant turf grass in their own yard.

In response, the Duffners’ attorney said he believes the case could set a dangerous precedent because it proves that the local government has the power to threaten a family with thousands of dollars in fines and decades in prison because they refuse to add something to their property that will cause them physical harm.

In response to the outrage over the news that a hospitalized homeowner was being cited for failing to mow his lawn while he was in the hospital, a spokesperson for the City of Dallas told NBC 5 that while a code compliance inspector did leave a notice on the fence of the property “to notify the homeowner that they were in violation,” the city is now taking into account “the sensitive nature of the case” and they have decided not to issue the homeowner a citation.

5 Stories You Missed While The Media Was Obsessing Over Michelle Wolf’s Speech

The name “Michelle Wolf” has dominated headlines and has become the talk of the mainstream media following the comedian’s speech roasting the Trump Administration at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday. While everyone seems to have an opinion on Wolf’s comments, the fact is that the debate has served as the perfect distraction from several incredibly important news stories from the around the world.

Here are five stories you may have missed while the media was obsessing over Michelle Wolf’s speech:

1. Military-industrial complex stocks crashed in response to a historic peace deal between North and South Korea

The leaders of North and South Korea reached a historic peace deal this week when they met in person for the first time and agreed to pursue an end to the Korean War. It signaled an incredible breakthrough in diplomacy that also sent the stocks of defense contractors in the United States crashing.

The same stocks that skyrocketed after Trump vowed to meet North Korea with “fire and fury like the world has never seen” in August 2017, fell significantly at the prospect of peace in Korea. Following the meeting, the five largest defense contractors in the U.S. lost more than $10 billion in value. Lockheed Martin (LMT) fell 2.5 percent, Northrop Grumman (NOC) fell 3.4 percent, General Dynamics (GD) fell 3.8 percent, and Boeing (BA) fell less than 1 percent.

2. The same people who begged for universal healthcare to save dying babies stayed silent as the UK government killed Baby Alfie

Alfie Evans, a 23-month-old boy with a rare degenerative neurological condition, died this weekend after he was taken off life support and he survived for more than four days without food or water, following orders from the UK government to end his life. Despite the fact that his family appealed every court decision, and even obtained Italian citizenship for Alfie so that they could secure extended treatment, he was still sentenced to die.

Unfortunately, this system is championed by many who claim that government should be in charge of medicine. For example, talk show host, Jimmy Kimmel delivered an emotional monologue last year about his new son, who was born with severe heart defects requiring emergency surgery. He used his experience to urge Americans to support state-run healthcare, yet he remained eerily silent when the same system he promoted was responsible for the death of Baby Alfie.

3. The police officers responsible for breaking into an innocent man’s home and shocking him with a Taser 18 times while he was in the shower, will face no charges for his death.

Officers Michael Rohleder and Anthony Munoz reportedly responded to a 911 call about a disturbance, and when they arrived at the location, they broke into the apartment and found Adam Trammell, 22, taking a shower. Trammell suffered from schizophrenia, and when police ripped open the shower curtain and started calling him “Brandon,” he did not answer right away because that was not his name and he was confused.

The officers responded by shocking Trammell with a Taser at least 18 times while he lay naked and helpless on the floor of his shower. He spent his last moments of consciousness in agonizing pain while vomiting profusely before his body went into distress and he died.

Not only did the officers not face charges, but the district attorney claimed there was no basis to conclusively link the death of Trammell to the officers’ actions.

Warning, the video below is extremely graphic.

4. Israeli soldiers executed three Palestinians in one day for the crime of standing too close to the Gaza border fence

Nearly 50 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli Defense Forces in the last six weeks, according to statistics from the Gaza Ministry of Health. That number increased by three in just one day when three men were shot and killed in two separate incidents on Sunday.

The three men were among many who have been killed by the IDF soldiers who later claimed that they opened fire because the suspects “attempted to infiltrate” the Israel-Gaza border. However, a video was leaked earlier this month that showed multiple Israeli men celebrating after a sniper targeted and shot a non-threatening man who was standing in a field on the other side of their border fence.

5. Seattle has become the latest city to give a second chance to citizens who have been convicted of marijuana possession by clearing their criminal convictions

Washington became one of the first states to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012, and the city of Seattle is now working to give its citizens a second chance by clearing decades of marijuana possession convictions.

Officials filed a motion in municipal court that will vacate—retroactively void—all misdemeanor marijuana convictions in the city. In a statement, Mayor Jenny Durkan said the request would affect 542 people, and that she sees this move as an important step to right the wrongs [of] the failed war on drugs.”

Cannabis legalization in California also brought about the hope that as many as nearly half a million people who have been labeled as felons for possessing a plant, could also have their cannabis convictions cleared.

Authorities recover body of 4-year-old boy swept out to sea while walking with mother on beach

Authorities recovered the body of a 4-year-old boy who was swept away by a wave while walking with his mother on a North Carolina beach on Wednesday, five days after his initial disappearance.

Officers with the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office found the body of Wesley Belisle on Carova Beach at around 7:40 a.m. on Monday morning, according to a release by the Kitty Hawk Police Department.

“Wesley’s family has been notified and are making arrangements for him to be transported back to New Hampshire,” Kitty Hawk Police Chief Joel C. Johnson wrote on the department’s Facebook page.

“We hope that the outpouring of compassion and offers of support, thoughts and prayers to the Belisle family from people all over the world can bring them some amount of solace in this time of tremendous grief.”

The Kitty Hawk Police Department received an initial report on Wednesday around 4 p.m. about a woman who was walking with her four-year-old son on the beach when the child was swept into the ocean by a surprise wave. The mother tried to rescue her child, but eventually lost sight of him in the swell, according to reports.

The Coast Guard search for the child was suspended around 8:30 p.m. on the same day.

“Suspending a search for anyone, let alone a young child, is the most difficult thing a commanding officer in the Coast Guard is called upon to do,” said Capt. Bion Stewart at the time. “I can’t imagine what the family of this little boy is going through right now.”

Kitty Hawk resident Megan Rubino described the accident as unimaginable to any parent.

“It’s so sad, I can’t even imagine,” she told WVEC. “I think about my babies now, and I mean it makes me want to cry, terrible.”

Opioids will kill over 100 Americans on National Weed Day, while the cannabis that could save them remains illegal

opioids cannabis

Every day, more than 100 Americans die in the United States from opioid overdoses, and while this epidemic has become increasingly devastating in recent years, a natural plant that has been shown to combat opioid addiction is still deemed “illegal” by the federal government.

According to research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as of March 2018, “more than 115 people in the United States die after overdosing on opioids.” These overdoses can be attributed to prescription pain medications, which are prescribed like candy with little warning about how dangerously addictive they are; heroin, which many addicts turn to when they lose access to prescription opioids; and fentanyl, which has become increasingly popular despite its deadly track record.

The rise of the opioid epidemic at home has coincided with the United States’ control of poppy production worldwide. Before the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001, there were around 189,000 heroin users in the United States. By 2016, that number had increased dramatically to 4.5 million users. The longest war in the nation’s history has resulted in the U.S. controlling 90 percent of the world’s opium supply.

If the U.S. wanted to decrease opium production in Afghanistan, it has the power to do so. But instead, President Trump has pledged to spend “the most money ever” fighting the ongoing opioid epidemic, while no one in his administration is proposing any legitimate solutions, and the officials who are paid to propose solutions have direct ties to the pharmaceutical companies that helped cause the crisis in the first place.

The government claims it can end the epidemic at the same time it is encouraging it by criminalizing a natural plant has been shown to combat opioid addiction. A study published in August 2017 found that when participants used cannabidiol (CBD), it actually blocked the opioid reward in their brains, and as a result, “The finding that cannabidiol blocks opioid reward suggests that this compound may be useful in addiction treatment settings.

Additionally, the National Institute on Drug Abuse has stated that Medical marijuana products may have a role in reducing the use of opioids needed to control pain.” Studies have also shown that deaths from opioids plummet in states where cannabis is legal and that 80 percent of cannabis users give up prescription pills.

The federal government is also prolonging the opioid epidemic by pushing for a ban on kratom, a natural herb derived from the coffee plant that has served as a life-saving alternative for individuals who are addicted to opioids. Instead of acknowledging the success of kratom, the Food and Drug Administration is attempting to have it labeled as a Schedule I drug, which would mean that they claim it has no medicinal value.

In a letter to the FDA, a group of scientists argued that banning kratom would actually “increase the number of deaths of Americans caused by opioids because many people who have found kratom to be their lifeline away from strong opioids will be vulnerable to resumption of that opioid use, whether their prior opioid use was for relief of pain or due to opioid addiction.”

As 4/20 celebrations take place across the country today, it important to remember that the opioid epidemic is just one of the many consequences of a “War on Drugs” that has only served to benefit Big Pharma, the prison industrial complex, and government lobbyists. If the government truly wanted to put an end to the devastating number of overdose deaths, it would stop demonizing the natural plants that have provided a life-saving alternative for the individuals who find themselves in the snares of opioid addiction.
