The trial of a man accused of killing five people and injuring ten others, when a truck he was driving plowed into a crowd of people in the Swedish capital Stockholm last April, is due to begin on Tuesday. Rakhmat Akilov, an Uzbek asylum seeker, has spoken of wanting to run over “infidels” and had sworn allegiance to ISIS the day before the attack, though the terror group have not claimed responsibility.
A truck driver is accused of ignoring warning signs and carelessly plowing across Peru’s famous Nazca Lines on Saturday, causing significant damage to the estimated 2,000-year-old archeological wonder, authorities said.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site, which features massive geoglyphs of animals, plants and various creatures that are seen from the air, was left with deep tire marks when the big rig left the road. The culture ministry released a photo showing the damage.
The ancient designs surrounding the vehicle, which collectively cover 280 square miles, are touted on UNESCO’s website as being “the most outstanding group of geoglyphs anywhere in the world and are unmatched in its extent, magnitude, quantity, size, diversity and ancient tradition to any similar work in the world.”
According to Argentine newspaper Clarín, cited by NPR, the driver defended his action, saying that he wasn’t familiar with the area and that he only left the road because of a mechanical problem.
The paper speculated, however, that he may have left the road in an attempt to avoid paying a highway toll.
Local news site Peru21 identified the driver as 40-year-old Jainer Jesús Flores Vigo and said that he was only briefly detained as there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that he acted with intent.
Prosecutors for the public ministry say they will pursue charges.
Though the ancient artwork is estimated to be thousands of years old, it continues to puzzle and amaze observers as the exact reason for its creation is uncertain ― though UNESCO’s website notes that the geoglyphs are believed to have had ritual astronomical functions.
One recent example of its ability to surprise was in 2014, when a pilot discovered previously unknown geoglyphs across the land after sandstorms unveiled them.
This wasn’t the first time people have harmed the historic artwork, however.
In 2017, Greenpeace activists damaged some of the land when they pulled a publicity stunt in a protected area near an etched hummingbird figure. That act involved placing giant letters across the land, spelling out a message for their organization.
Simply walking on the land without special footwear will leave permanent scarring, the country’s deputy culture minister, Luis Jaime Castillo, said at the time of the incident.
“They are absolutely fragile,” he told the Associated Press. “They are black rocks on a white background. You walk there and the footprint is going to last hundreds or thousands of years. And the line that they have destroyed is the most visible and most recognized of all.”

A train carrying dozens of Republican members of Congress to an annual retreat hit a garbage truck in Virginia on Wednesday, killing one person who was in the vehicle, officials said.
The Amtrak train, which was en route to West Virginia from Washington, D.C., collided with the truck west of Crozet, Va., at approximately 11:20 a.m. ET, an Amtrak official told Yahoo News.
“Two Amtrak crew members and three passengers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries,” the Amtrak spokesperson said. “Local law enforcement is investigating the incident and crews are inspecting equipment for damage.”
Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., one of the GOP lawmakers who was on the train, told CNN that one person in the truck was killed and two others were injured. One of the injured was airlifted from the scene, Flake said, and he and other lawmakers and emergency personnel carried the other to an ambulance.
There were 3 people in the truck that was straddling the track and which the train hit. One is dead. One I am told is being transported but has minor injuries. One has serious injuries—please pray. Flake said some members may have suffered minor injuries, but none appeared to be serious.
An aide for Rep. Jason Lewis told ABC News that the Minnesota Republican was “taken to the hospital and examined for possible concussion following train collision.”
“The train carrying GOP members to our retreat had a collision, but Rebecca and I are both okay,” Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Ala., wrote on Twitter. “Security and doctors on board are helping secure the scene and treat injuries.”
On social media, several lawmakers and local news outlets shared photos of the wreckage at the scene.

At the White House, press secretary Sarah Sanders said President Trump had been “fully briefed” on the situation in Virginia.
“There is one confirmed fatality and one serious injury,” Sanders said in a statement. “There are no serious injuries among members of Congress or their staff. Senior administration officials are in regular contact with Amtrak and state and local authorities. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected by this incident.”
Today’s incident was a terrible tragedy. We are grateful for the first responders who rushed to the scene and we pray for the victims and their families. May they all be in our thoughts right now.
— Paul Ryan (@SpeakerRyan) January 31, 2018
Sanders added that the president spoke to House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was on the train, and that “all members of Congress and congressional staff escaped serious injury.”
“I just spoke with Speaker Ryan,” Trump told reporters later Wednesday afternoon. “They’re doing pretty good. The train accident was a tough one — a tremendous jolt.”
“It was a pretty rough hit, that’s what they all tell me,” the president added.
Trump is scheduled to attend the three-day retreat at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., on Thursday. Vice President Mike Pence, who was scheduled to speak there later Wednesday, said he still intends to do so.

Immigration authorities have found nearly 80 people crammed into the back of a truck trying to enter the US without proper documents.
The truck was travelling on highway in Laredo, Texas, near the US-Mexico border when the driver was pulled over. He was later arrested.
He was questioned about his immigration status and though he is a US citizen, the truck was subjected to a secondary search and 76 people from Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala were found huddled inside.
At least 13 were found to be unaccompanied children.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said all the people found in the trailer were in “good health”.
CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Laredo Sector Assistant Chief Patrol Agent Gabriel Acosta said in a CBP news release: “These criminal organisations view these individuals as mere commodities without regard for their safety. The blatant disregard for human life will not be tolerated.”
“We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to disrupt and dismantle these organisations and prosecute those responsible,” Mr Acosta said.
Transporting people across the border in trailer trucks has become a dangerous practice.
In July, ten undocumented immigrants died from overheating while trapped in a trailer in San Antonio, Texas.
The air conditioning and ventilation systems had broken leaving dozens more with severe brain damage and other injuries.
The driver, a US citizen from Florida, had left the vehicle in a Wal-Mart parking lot and claimed he did not there were people in the back.
Survivors, however, claimed they banged on the walls in order to get out.
The undocumented immigrants found on 26 January, including the children, will be taken to a processing and detention centres.
They have arrived at a time when border security and the fate of the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which allowed people brought to the US illegally as minors to stay and work, are under hot debate in Congress.
The idiocy of those who espouse radical Marxist/Communist views was on full display yesterday in Portland, Oregon, USA, in more ways than one.
As a pro-Christian Christmas march got underway, a counter protest of few strident ‘anarchist Communists’ confronted them.
Referring to the cross symbol that the Christian group were carrying, one ‘communist’ claimed that it was a “known white supremacist symbol” and claimed that “them going around pushing their Christianity on people who aren’t necessarily Christian…their obsession with their holiday, their obsession with freedom of speech marks that they want to hurt people….these people have a disdain for human rights”
Pot – kettle – black. With that level of logic, we’re mystified as to how such people manage to tie their own shoelaces.
Another Marxist/Anarchist luminary had this to say through his bullhorn:
“Communism will win, that’s not a joke, that will happen. We must go down to single class society…democratic and anarchist communism will be the ideology of the future”
But the real highlight of the event, and a fitting one we have to say, was when the person who made the comments about free speech attempted to traverse a road but instead had a close encounter with the hood of an evil capitalist car.
Thor Trucks is planning to begin production of its all-electric Class 8 semi tractor in 2019.
What seemed like a frivolous idea just a short while ago is looking more and more like a very viable future for transportation fleets, and although Tesla, as always, gets the most coverage for its heavy-duty Semi solution, there are a number of other companies building their own electric cargo haulers. Among the latest to surface in the news is the startup Thor Motors, which just announced its own offering, the ET-One, said to be available as soon as 2019.
The Class 8 ET-One is claimed to have a hauling capacity of 80,000 pounds and a range of about 300 miles per charge, with a 90-minute charge time. It intends to deliver a 70% savings in fuel costs per mile, as well as 60% lower maintenance costs, with the intended market being short-haul and regional fleets. The price is expected to be about $150,000, which is significantly cheaper than the presumed $180,000 Tesla Semi, but they’re also two completely different animals, so to speak. Even aside from the differing specs on the two models, the companies themselves are virtual opposites. Whereas Tesla has not only its vehicle production facilities up and running, as well as its own battery production pipeline in place, Thor Trucks is operating out of an LA-area warehouse, where it currently takes existing truck platforms and retrofits an electric drivetrain and battery pack into them according to the needs and specifications of customers.
According to Bloomberg, one of the founders of Thor Trucks, Dakota Semler, managed the fleet of trucks at his family’s vineyard, first converting them to run on waste vegetable oil, and then turning his sights to the electrification of semis. Instead of building an entire vehicle from the ground up, Thor Trucks focuses on what it believes it can do best, which is to optimize its battery packs and electric drivetrain, as well as work on the software that helps to make the most of the capacity.
The company now has a working prototype of its ET-One, and offers fleet demos to prospective buyers, and expects to be able to produce the truck in 2019. However, there’s no indication what the time to ramp up production might be for this 18-person company if some of the big fleet customers place initial orders to trial the trucks, as they have with Tesla.

NEWARK, Ohio – A Newark police officer was arrested over the weekend, accused of discharging his firearm from his pickup truck.
Authorities say they got called to Surrey Drive and found shell casings. Officers say they were also near North 21st Street and State Route 16, where they heard more shots, and saw a pickup truck matching the description witnesses gave them earlier.
Authorities say officers stopped the truck and recognized the driver as Newark Police officer Todd Brunton. Inside his car, they found a gun which appeared to have been recently fired. They also say the casings found on the scene matched the gun. Authorities arrested officer Brunton on the spot. Mary, who didn’t want to give her last name, said she knows officer Brunton and finds this shocking.
“I was sick. I just, it’s still unbelievable cause that’s not Todd,” said Mary.
Just last year, the Newark Police Department posted on their Facebook page a fundraiser for officer Brunton to help raise money for his family after he was diagnosed with a non-curable form of leukemia.

US President Donald Trump has tweeted that the suspect in the New York truck attack that killed eight people should get the death penalty.
Referring to the suspect’s nonchalant behavior in the hospital where he was taken after police officers shot him, Trump tweeted: “NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room.”
Uzbek national Sayfullo Saipov has been formally accused of killing at least eight people and charged with providing material support and resources to the Islamic State terrorist group. He is the main suspect in the Tuesday attack, where he ran a truck along a busy cycle lane in lower Manhattan before ramming it into a school bus. He was then shot in the abdomen by police officers arriving on the scene and taken to a hospital.
Saipov has shown no remorse for his actions. On the contrary, he reportedly told law enforcement officials he was inspired to carry out the attack by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) videos he watched on his cellphone, and felt good about what he had done. He then asked if he could hang an IS flag in his ward.
Donald Trump’s previous comments in the wake of the attack have mostly focused on calling for tougher migration regulations, including “tougher extreme vetting” and a curb on “chain migration,” saying that some families that immigrants bring with them can be “truly evil.”

The United States will be immediately implementing much tougher Extreme Vetting Procedures. The safety of our citizens comes first!
