Police Release Body Cam, Showing Officers Brutally Assault 84yo Grandmother

grandmothergrandmother

Mesa, AZ — An Arizona family has learned the hard way what calling the police to help a relative can often look like as their grandmother was hospitalized after a welfare check. Showing their incompetence, the welfare check was for another family member but the police assaulted the innocent grandmother anyway.

The Free Thought Project reported on the incident when it happened last week and this week, body camera footage was released.

Although they released the video, the Mesa police department deliberately blurred the entire clip. However, even low resolution can’t hide the sadistic act of abusing an innocent grandmother.

As we previously reported, Ashlee Hahn detailed the assault in a dramatic Facebook post which showed the extent of her grandmother’s injuries. Hahn’s grandmother was hurt so bad during the check that she had to be hospitalized.

According to Hahn, her grandmother “is recovering from her fourth stroke and is confused, cognitively impaired & barely physically able to stand on her own because of uncontrollable shaking.”

Hahn’s mother had called in a welfare check for her son who lives on his grandmother’s property. She told police her son was suicidal. Police were even given specific instructions not to disturb the 84-year-old because she is easily confused and fragile.

“The police were called to her residence for a wellness check for a close family member who lives on her property,” explained Hahn. “They were specifically asked not to bother or question my grandmother because of her present and very fragile state.”

In spite of telling them to steer clear, however, police did the exact opposite.

“They forced her out of her home into the street, holding her arms tight enough to leave bruises and bleeding,” wrote Hahn. “Her inability to hold still (because of her previous strokes, as seen in uploaded videos) inclined them to slam her down, head first on the asphalt. They handcuffed her after she woke from her unconscious state.”

Indeed, the video shows this exact scenario. Officers forced the woman from her home by repeatedly telling her to come toward them. When she gets by them, she was clearly confused and had no idea what was going on.

Illustrating just how out of it she was, she starts referencing officers being behind the cars like a movie. As she turned around, the officers grabbed her and then surrounded her.

“You are not following my directions,” says a cop to the severely frail innocent elderly woman. Moments later, the innocent grandmother is slammed to the ground as cops jump on top of her and put her in handcuffs.

When Hahn’s grandmother woke up, she was in the hospital, bloodied and bruised. Police then immediately began conducting damage control.

“After seeing the damage they had done & sending my Grandmother off in an ambulance, they called my Mother (who made the original wellness check call) and told her that my Grandmother “slipped,” Hahn explained.

To try and alleviate their liability, an officer was sent, not to check on an elderly grandmother who’d just been the subject of a savage attack, but, instead, to defend their fellow cop and his choice to inflict harm on an innocent old lady.

“The officer who came down to the hospital only seemed to care about deflecting & defending the officers involved. No accountability. No apologies,” Hahn wrote.

What’s more, to try to legitimize the attack on an innocent grandmother, police then charged her with obstruction.

Hahn filmed part of the interaction with the officer in the hospital as he defended his fellow cop’s decision to needlessly confront her (against the family’s wishes) and then violently throw her to the ground.

“Why did he put me down on the asphalt?” asked the innocent elderly woman.

“It is my understanding when I spoke to the officer, that you pulled away from him a little bit and he took action like that, okay?” the officer callously explains of how his fellow officer could somehow rationalize assaulting an innocent grandmother.

Pulling away from an officer “a little bit” in the land of the free will now apparently result in innocent elderly women being thrown to the ground.

“I said don’t treat me like this. I don’t want to have a stroke,” the innocent grandmother says as she shakes in her hospital bed. “I don’t want to have a heart attack. Don’t treat me this way.”

According to Hahn, her grandmother is “traumatized & feels untrusting of the people who she thought would protect her.”

Hahn has a message for the Mesa Police Department as well.

“If this was your grandmother, what would you do? Mesa police department needs to be held accountable.”

Indeed, they do.

In response to the incident, to Mesa Police chief released a statement reading in part:

This incident was captured by an officer’s Axon body camera and I have subsequently directed an internal investigation. Please know that I understand why this situation was alarming. It’s critically important that our department symbolizes trust and faith, and that our residents know officers will do our very best, no matter the circumstances. We all have a mother and a grandmother who we love very much; their safety and well-being are always a priority.

We have been in contact with the grandmother and her family. In addition, I will personally meet with professionals in our community who specialize in senior care to better understand their unique needs and how we can enhance our training protocols. We are a continually learning organization and this will give us an opportunity to reassess our practices and make any changes necessary to improve the quality of service.

Video Released Showing Police Kill Unarmed 17yo Boy in His Driveway—No Charges

unarmedunarmed

Johnson County, KS — No charges will be filed against an unnamed Overland Park Police Officer who shot and killed an unarmed 17-year-old boy on January 20, 2018. Police were called to the home of teenager John Albers after his girlfriend said she was afraid he was going to kill himself. Police arrived and one officer opened fire on Albers as the teen backed out of his driveway.

The shooting was caught on police dash cam and one angle seems to show the teen start to back the family’s minivan out of the driveway before being confronted by the police officer. That officer fired an initial two shots. After the first two shots were fired, Albers may have been wounded and it caused him to push the gas.

The vehicle then spun out in donut-like fashion, nearly hitting the officer. Fully engaged in the conflict the officer then opened fire with 11 more bullets further wounding and eventually killing the reportedly distraught teen.

Once again, another American family is faced with the sad reality an officer of the peace ended their son’s life in the family’s own front yard. That officer has since resigned from the police force for “personal reasons.” Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe told reporters in a news conference with Overland Park Police Chief Frank Donchez that no charges would be filed against the officer because he was “following police procedure.”

Predictably, Sheriff Donchez took the side of his former officer when he said:

He was out of the way at one point, but as you saw the van turned around and came back at him…One of the misconceptions is that if you are alongside a vehicle you are no longer subject to danger. That’s not remotely true. One cut of the wheel to one side or other can take you down with the side of the vehicle. Don’t let the fact that he’s alongside the vehicle fool anyone into believing that he’s no longer in danger…A vehicle can be a weapon…That factored into our equation.

Following the shooting, the Johnson County Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team (OISIT) conducted the post-shooting investigation. As TFTP has reported, in other states when there’s an officer-involved shooting, the police department from which the officer was employed cannot take the lead. Predictably, OISIT, after investigating its own county’s police department, found no wrongdoing on the part of the still unnamed officer.

Albers’ family issued the following statement on social media after their son was gunned down outside their home:

We are heartbroken at the loss of our beloved son, John. We truly appreciate the outpouring of support from friends, family and community. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers and for respecting our privacy during this very difficult time. John was loved by many.

John Albers was a Junior at Blue Valley Northwest High School. He was a member of the Wrestling and Soccer teams and was involved with at-risk youth in a Kansas City based soccer league. The officer who killed him reportedly knew Albers but it is unclear how he was known by police. Friends of Albers say he was unfairly portrayed in a negative light but was, in fact, “loyal”, “courageous”, and “compassionate.”

Dozens of his friends gathered outside his home, wrote memories of Albers on balloons and released them following a vigil. The young man’s death is one of nearly 1,200 deaths by officers recorded yearly. He was unarmed. He was suicidal. And he was killed by a cop who was supposedly in fear of his life.

Fox 4 Kansas City, in its coverage of the shooting, encouraged its readers to call 911 if citizens are suicidal. Many residents will likely rethink that suggestion following this report which accurately details how a suicidal person can become a victim of homicide by dialing 911, killed by the very people who are sent to help. Something has to change.

DA Howe said police get 2,400 calls for help by suicidal people and their families. He admitted police need more training in dealing with the mentally ill. “Please give us more resources to deal with mental health crisis in the country…Unfortunately, the vast majority of our officer-involved shootings involve people with mental illness,” Howe said.

John Albers was born Valery Alexandrovich Zhemchugov in Belarus. He was adopted by Sheila Albers (Principal of Harmony Middle School) and Steve Albers when he was just an infant. Reflecting on John’s adoption, Sheila said, “John brought us much more joy than we brought him in this sense that he fulfilled our dreams of becoming parents…There’s nothing more beautiful than that.

The following is dashcam footage from the actual shooting. One can clearly see the officer open fire on Albers before he started driving erratically. Those two shots were likely unnecessary and would have made any motorist attempt to flee or cause them to lose control. Unfortunately, the officer will never be held accountable for his reckless actions, charged with murder, or spend any time behind bars. But if the average citizen had done what he did, they likely would be held without bond until trial. That’s what is wrong and needs to be fixed.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg clearly showing toxic effects of "chemo brain" … unable to think clearly, takes LONG pauses during conversations

Image: Ruth Bader Ginsburg clearly showing toxic effects of “chemo brain” … unable to think clearly, takes LONG pauses during conversations

(Natural News)
No decent human being should get their kicks from taking pot shots at someone who has had to battle cancer, especially when the person in question is 84 years old. Nonetheless, when that person is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and is clearly exhibiting signs of cognitive impairment, it is the responsibility of the authentic media to highlight the issue.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has been in office since being appointed by Bill Clinton on August 10, 1993, is known for her stance on gender discrimination and became infamous when she targeted President Donald Trump for abuse in the run-up to the most recent presidential elections.

At the time, the president retaliated by tweeting, “Justice Ginsburg of the U.S. Supreme Court has embarrassed all by making very dumb political statements about me. Her mind is shot – resign!”

While President Trump’s response might have seemed harsh at the time, the truth of his statement became abundantly clear earlier this month when Ginsburg was interviewed by CNN’s Poppy Harlow at Columbia University.

The Daily Wire describes the interview as “embarrassing,” and notes that it drew widespread criticism because of Ginsburg’s total inability to collect her thoughts and formulate coherent responses to Harlow’s questions.

A horrified viewer named Bill Zankich tweeted, “It is PAINFUL to watch this…I nearly exited the video multiple times. Her thoughts are fragmented and there is no association between the question and her response. I cannot fathom that mental wellness is not esteemed as necessary when related to sitting SCOTUS members.” [Emphasis added]

Zankich makes a very salient point: As much as any humane person might feel compassion for an elderly person struggling in this way, if Ginsburg is not able to cope with a simple interview, how can she hold the highest judicial office in the land? And why are the mental faculties of supreme court judges not assessed, considering the gravity and responsibility of their positions?

While it might be tempting to write Ginsburg’s incoherence and inability to formulate her thoughts off as the ravages of old age, if one examines her behavior closely it becomes obvious that she is suffering from what is known as “chemo-brain.”

As Mike Adams, the Health Ranger and editor of Natural News reported in 2016, Ginsburg’s brain was damaged when she underwent chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2009. Chemotherapy is an incredibly toxic treatment that destroys both cancerous and healthy cells in the body – including the brain, resulting in impaired cognitive ability. (Related: Learn more at Chemotherapy.news.)

The Mayo Clinic lists some of the symptoms of chemo brain as follows: (Notice how many of them Ginsburg is exhibiting)

  • Mental fogginess;
  • Confusion;
  • Difficulty concentrating;
  • Struggling to find the right word;
  • A short attention span;
  • Trouble learning new skills;
  • Inability to multitask;
  • Issues with short-term memory;
  • Trouble remembering conversations, images or lists of words; and
  • Taking a long time to complete routine tasks.

Interestingly, even before Ginsburg underwent chemotherapy, the Health Ranger warned that she should be removed from the bench because the chemo she was about to receive would be sure to destroy at least some of her cognitive abilities.

Adams asked an important question at the time:

Should the freedom of an entire nation rest upon the judgment of a decision maker whose brain has been poisoned with chemotherapy?

Sadly, Ginsburg was already cancer-free when she was prescribed chemotherapy as a precautionary measure. Likely her doctors never even warned her about what this toxic treatment would do to her. And now, after a lifetime of meriting people’s respect, she has been reduced to incoherent ramblings.

Despite Video Showing Cop Break the Law and Kill 2 Innocent Men, He Was Hired at New Dept.

jobjob

Spalding County, GA — The family of a man who was mowed down by an out of control cop is expressing their shock and disappointment this week after the cop who killed their son and his best friend was given a job as a police officer in their town.

Justin Sullivan and his best friend Quentin Byrd were stuck and killed by officer Terry Belvin as they crossed Highway 7 in 2014. Belvin was driving his police cruiser at speeds topping 100mph. He had no lights on, no siren on, and was not responding to a call.

Dashcam of the horrendous crash has just been released publicly showing the disturbing scene unfold.

In the video, the former Barnesville police officer was driving 96 mph with no lights or sirens on making him nearly invisible to the two pedestrians. As the cop comes over a hill, he has no time at all to stop or swerve, sending the front bumper of his cruiser smashing in to the two men. They both died instantly.

“This man was dangerous. He was reckless. He was driving too fast,” Danita Taylor said.

Sullivan’s family was under the impression that after he killed their beloved son Belvin was forced to give up his peace officer’s license in lieu of criminal prosecution.

In spite of allegedly relinquishing his license, however, Belvin was just hired on as a deputy with the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office.

“I was just disgusted. More so than that, I was just shocked,” Taylor said.

When asked by WSB-TV what happened to Belvin while at their department, the Barnesville police chief said Belvin resigned during the investigation. Quitting your job as a cop while under criminal investigation is a common theme among law enforcement as it aids in avoiding actual accountability.

In Belvin’s case, that is exactly what happened.

After he quietly resigned during the investigation, the union lawyers somehow convinced a grand jury that Belvin did nothing wrong and he escaped any and all accountability for taking the lives of two innocent young men.

The Sullivan family is now speaking out, telling the Spalding County sheriff, Darrel Dix, that he should reconsider his decision to hire this reckless cop as they live in the very county that he will now be policing.

“He’s employed in Griffin, Georgia, and my children are there every day,” Taylor told WSB-TV.

Dix noted that he would not fire Belvin and instead praised the officer’s “pristine record” while claiming ignorance on the fact that Sullivan’s family lives in Spalding County.

Part of this “pristine record” involves the officer getting a DUI as well as being indirectly involved in the controversial death of another man.

Naturally, Taylor is calling out the Sheriff for disregarding the public’s safety by hiring this man who has already proven to be a danger to society.

“You should be ashamed,” Taylor said to the sheriff. Indeed.

As TFTP previously reported, a shocking report showed just how dangerous being an innocent bystander can be when police are behind the wheel.

On average, according to the report, one person every day is killed by speeding cops.

To put this into perspective, that’s larger than the number of people killed by floods, tornadoes, lightning, and hurricanes — combined.

Contrary to popular thinking, high-speed chases aren’t only dangerous for those involved. Innocent bystanders are all too often the victims of these reckless pursuits.

According to the report, more than 5,000 bystanders and passengers have been killed in police car chases since 1979. Tens of thousands more were injured as officers repeatedly pursued drivers at high speeds and in hazardous conditions.

Aside from the 5,000 completely innocent lives lost, an additional 6,300 fleeing ‘suspects’ were also killed, bringing the total to 11,506 dead since 1979. Even this shockingly large number is likely an understatement, according to the report. The Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) uses police reports to determine if a crash is chase related, and many of the reports do not disclose that a chase had occurred at all.

CNN Discredits Own Poll Showing Overwhelming Positive Reaction to SOTU

CNN
Anderson Cooper 360
January 30, 2018
11:49:43 PM Eastern

WOLF BLITZER: Welcome back. We’re now getting the first results of our instant poll of people who actually watched the President’s speech. David Chalian our political director is here, give us the numbers and give us the explanation that this is not necessarily a national poll.

DAVID CHALIAN: Well, it’s not. It’s not representative of the country overall it is a poll of people who watched the speech. Well, who watches a State of the Union address? Fans of the person giving it. So it is definitely an audience that skews a little bit more towards Republicans than Democrats in the Obama years it was the reverse.

Here’s what we found out. 48 percent of those who watched the speech tonight had a very positive reaction to the speech. 22 percent, somewhat positive. 29 percent, negative. Last year when the President gave a speech, that 48 percent was 57 percent. So he did late worse this year than last year, but still obviously a very positive reaction from speech watchers.

How about will his policies move the country in the right direction or the wrong direction? 62 percent of speech watchers tonight say that Donald Trump’s policies, as laid out tonight, will move the country in the right direction. And, of course, we also asked about confidence in Donald Trump’s ability to carry out his duties as president. As you can see, among those watching the speech tonight, 42 percent very confident, 15 percent somewhat confident, and 43 percent not confident that he has the ability to carry out his duties.

BLITZER: How does this compare historically with other presidents?

CHALIAN: So, here’s an interesting statistic. We went back to look at the State of the Union address at the beginning of a midterm election year where the president’s party was facing a lot of headwinds. Take a look at this. 48 percent very positive reaction across the board. Barack Obama at the beginning of 2010, he had 48 percent very positive reaction. George W. Bush at the beginning of 2006, in his second midterms, 48 percent, very positive. As you know, those midterm elections did not go well for Bush or Obama. Donald Trump, the same place tonight, 48 percent, very positive in the reaction from speech watchers.

BLITZER: But if the President looks at these numbers of people who actually watched the speech and there were more Republicans who watched than Democrats, he’s clearly going to be pleased.

CHALIAN: Well, there’s no doubt about it. He’s getting a very good response from people who are inclined to like him. When your poll numbers are hovering between 35 and 40 percent nationally, obviously looking at a poll that says 48 percent very positive, 22 percent somewhat positive, you’re going to like those numbers a lot better over national numbers.

Despite Video Showing Cop Smash Man’s Face In Jurors Believed Police When They Said He ‘Fell’

fellfell

Fort Smith, AR — A jury of his peers ruled this week that Officer Justin Deleon (Ret.) and the city of Fort Smith were not guilty of using excessive force against Clarence Scott when Deleon slammed Scott to the ground knocking out many of his front teeth. Scott was handcuffed and being escorted into jail when Deleon whirled him around, slamming him face-first to the ground. Despite having closed-circuit video footage of the attack, the jury—apparently blinded by the glare of the badge—ruled in favor of the officer.

Originally arrested for disorderly conduct, Scott was booked into jail following the attack. Those charges were later dropped. Scott hired several lawyers and sued the officer as well as the city of Fort Smith. Defense attorneys attempted to characterize Scott as only looking for a payday, while the plaintiffs insisted the attack was unprovoked. Unfortunately, the jury did not rule in favor of the brutalized man.

It took less than an hour for the jury in the federal civil rights lawsuit to rule in favor of Deleon. Even the local media reported Scott simply fell on his face as he was being escorted to jail. According to Arkansas Online:

The lawsuit centered on injuries Scott suffered April 18, 2014, when he fell onto the concrete floor of the Sebastian County jail’s sally port, a garage.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. From the video footage, one can clearly see a compliant Scott, being directed by Deleon into the jail. All of a sudden, the officer makes an aggressive move towards the prisoner, pushing him onto the trunk of the police cruiser. With only one hand (his other hand was holding a clipboard), the officer then tripped Scott who fell face first on the concrete floor where he reportedly suffered severe facial and dental injuries. According to Kathie Leah Hudson, one of Scott’s lawyers:

Yesterday a jury in Ft. Smith, Arkansas, exonerated the City of Ft. Smith and a (former) Ft. Smith police officer (retired due to health) that knocked out this man’s front teeth, an oral surgeon said it will take a $20,000 surgery to correct the damage to his temporal-mandibular joints and $1,000 a tooth to restore the broken and fractured top front teeth. The defense said he fell, you decide. Mr. Scott’s alleged crime was disorderly conduct, it was dismissed.

Juries all across the United States have ruled in favor of police officers when it seemed clear to everyone but the jurors the police officers were in the wrong. Hiding behind claims of “qualified immunity,” defense teams have successfully exonerated a whole host of law enforcement personnel from prosecution, litigation, and embarrassment. Somehow, someway, things have to change.

As TFTP has reported on numerous occasions, police officers have been accused of taking advantage of the helpless and defenseless position prisoners are in while they’re in handcuffs.

A Washington police officer was given a two-year paid vacation after he punched a handcuffed woman in the back of his squad car. An Indiana police officer was allowed to keep his job after punching a handcuffed man in his genitals.

In court, Deleon and his lawyers contended Scott attempted to head butt the officer. Deleon claimed taking Scott to the ground was no accident and that he reached out to try and prevent the man from getting hurt. We will let our readers decide. Below is the video posted by Scott’s lawyer.

If the roles had been reversed and Scott had slammed officer Deleon on the ground severely damaging his face and teeth, Scott would have been charged with felony assault on a police officer. So the real question remains, “Why was Deleon not charged with felony assault?” Not only was he not charged, nor was found liable in the civil suit, he was allowed to retire presumably with full benefits. Something has to change.

Charges Dropped! Body Cam Footage Showing Cops Plant Drugs Vindicates Man

bodybody

Los Angeles, CA — A Los Angeles man has escaped serious charges after being exonerated by police body camera footage which showed officers planting a baggy of cocaine into his wallet. Thanks to a persistent local media station out of Los Angeles, this body camera footage was released publicly and played a major role in the charges being dropped against 52-year-old Ronald Shields.

Attorney Steve Levine said he believed that body camera footage from his client’s arrest shows LAPD officers planting drugs. He also noticed several inconsistencies in the video that contradict statements the officers made in their police reports. The footage stems from Shields’ arrest last year after he panicked at an accident scene and fled.

On Wednesday, the case came to an end as the charges of felony hit and run, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and drug possession were all dropped. Because he did admit to fleeing the scene of an accident, Shields pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor hit and run.

Levine told reporters that the body camera footage has a “very big bearing” on the outcome his client’s case. Indeed it did as Shields was facing the possibility of years in prison.

As TFTP previously reported, according to Levine, the body cameras can be turned on and off by officers, but the recording actually starts proactively and will pick up the 30 seconds of activity that takes place in front of the camera prior to it being turned on. Levine said that the drugs were planted in this 30-second timeframe when the officers did not know that they were being filmed.

Showing the video to CBS, Levine pointed out that a white square can be seen in the officer’s hand before one of the officers picks up a small bag of drugs off the ground. The video also shows the officer awkwardly moving around the suspect and bending down towards the area that the drugs were found just after fiddling around with the white square in his hand.

“There’s a little white square here in his hand. I believe the video shows the drugs were in his right hand and transfers to his left hand,” Levine said.

Furthermore, the officers testified that the bag of drugs was found in his left pocket, but the video shows it being found on the ground. Then the officers are seen taking the drugs off of the ground and placing them into his wallet, which is an obvious breach of protocol. Next, LAPD Officer Gaxiola is seen in the video carrying the wallet to several different officers telling them “He has a little bag of narco in here.”

The judge reportedly said on Thursday that he does not agree with Levine about the white square that can obviously be seen in the officer’s hand, but it is undeniable that the footage on the body camera contradicts the information that the officers provided in their police report.

“It certainly asked questions that need to be answered,” Police Chief Charlie Beck said soon after the video aired.

The LAPD responded to these revelations in a statement saying that they will be opening an internal investigation into the use and misuse of bodycams by officers on the street. That investigation is still currently open.

Naturally, the union-supplied attorney for the cops denies any wrongdoing by the officers.

“I don’t think there’s anything nefarious whatsoever,” Bill Seki, an attorney representing two of the officers said. “It wasn’t something that was being hidden.” However, the fact that the body camera wasn’t turned on until after the drugs were placed in Shields’ wallet, indicates otherwise.

The union described the release of the video as a “circus sideshow” and praised the officers in the video below.

If you think police officers planting evidence is some anomaly, think again.

After their department gained national shame in August over a video showing an officer planting drugs to frame an innocent man while his fellow cops watched, the Baltimore Police Department showed the world the dark reality that is framing people to make arrests. Only days after the first video was released, the Baltimore Public Defender’s office released a second video that allegedly “appears to depict multiple officers working together to manufacture evidence.”

It was then announced that nearly three dozen people will have their charges dropped after the video of Officer Richard Pinheiro showed him planting drugs while Officers Hovhannes Simonyan and Jamal Brunson stood by and did nothing. Naturally, the BPD claimed nothing unscrupulous was going in in the aforementioned videos.

It is not just Baltimore cops either—as TFTP previously reported, in one of the most shocking cases of badge abuse ever exposed, the Alabama Justice Project revealed that a ring of corrupt cops in the Dothan Police Department planted drugs and guns on hundreds of young black men for over a decade, in most cases resulting in their imprisonment. Their actions were aided by supervisors and covered up by the district attorney.

How about plastic for dinner? It is showing up in mussels from the Arctic to China, and ending up on our plates

Image: How about plastic for dinner? It is showing up in mussels from the Arctic to China, and ending up on our plates

(Natural News)
While some moules et frites (mussels and fries) sounds delicious, the dish probably wouldn’t be as appetizing if every other bite had plastic in it. According to a recent study, mussels from the European Arctic to China are contaminated with “tiny bits of plastic.”

Mussels in Arctic waters contain the most plastic of all specimens tested along the Norwegian coast, according to the researchers. This alarming discovery emphasizes that ocean pollution is spreading globally, and may even end up on our dinner plates.

A study by a group of researchers from the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) determined the presence of plastic in mussels in Arctic waters. Amy Lusher, one of the researchers who took part in the study, shared that plastics could have reached the north via ocean currents and winds from Europe and America. The plastic then ends up “swirling around the Arctic Ocean.”

Lusher added that “microplastics” were found in all the mussels that were studied. Earlier surveys confirmed the presence of microplastics in nations such as China, Chile, Canada, the U.K., and Belgium. In Norway, the mollusks often contained at least 1.8 bits of microplastic, or anything smaller than five millimeters (mm) long (0.2 inches), with 4.3 in the Arctic.

In 2016, Chinese researchers cautioned that mussels might be a global “bioindicator of microplastic pollution” since mollusks thrive on the seabed. Seabeds are often full of plastics and, unlike fish, mollusks stay in the same place.

It remains to be seen how microplastics can affect marine life and how the consumption of the material can affect humans. Scientists believe that to be at risk, a huge amount of shellfish must be eaten. Belgian diets for instance, often include a lot of moules et frites, which is a favorite dish in the region.

Professor Richard Thompson, an expert on microplastics at Plymouth University, warned that this update means we must put more effort into “reducing the input of plastic to the ocean… It’s a cause for concern at the moment rather than an alarm story for human consumption.” (Related: 12 Easy Ways to Reduce Plastic Usage.)

Last December 2017, at least 200 nations signed a UN resolution to eliminate plastic pollution in the seas, such as bottles, supermarket bags and food packaging, which totals at least eight million tons a year.

Professor Thompson’s research also determined that extremely high levels of plastic on the seabed can endanger animals like lugworms that live there, since such materials can build up in their tissues.

However, most plastic will simply pass through the guts of creatures like shellfish. The professor noted that human exposure to microplastics in seafood is likely to be below that from everyday plastics such as toys.

Scientists are looking into whether microplastics can cause mussels or oysters to make pearls, which nature forms as a safety precaution against “natural irritants like sand.” Lusher adds that while pearls could jack up the price of some shellfish, they can injure some unwitting diners.

Tips to minimize plastic usage

If you wish to cut down on the plastic waste that you produce, please read the tips listed below:

  • Avoid using plastic straws and get a reusable stainless steel or glass straw instead.
  • Always bring a reusable produce bag.
  • Stop chewing gum. Made of a synthetic rubber, chewing gum is also a kind of plastic.
  • Try to reuse containers for storing leftovers or shopping in bulk.
  • Use a reusable bottle or mug for your beverages, even when ordering from a to-go shop.
  • Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters. You can also invest in a refillable metal lighter.
  • Don’t use plasticware at home. Ask restaurants not to include them in your take-out box.

Mateo Rueda plans to appeal his firing, claiming defamation of character over how Lincoln Elementary School handled it. The school, however, reportedly didn’t fire Rueda strictly over the nude paintings, but for how Rueda reacted once students were upset by them, according to the Herald Journal.

The incident occurred on December 4, when students were instructed to study art postcards from the Cache County school’s library. ‘The Art Box’ collection had been a part of the library for years, before Rueda began teaching there, and he says he was unaware that several of the 100 cards contained nudity.

Two of the controversial art pieces were Italian painter Amadeo Modigliani’s ‘Iris Tree’ (1916) and French artist Francois Boucher’s ‘Odalisque’ (1749).

“I immediately took back from students the postcards I felt could make students feel uncomfortable,” he told the Herald Journal. “Then I explained to the whole class that art can sometimes show images that are not always comfortable to all, that art is better understood when placed in its proper context, that the human body is often portrayed in art, and that the images in the school collection are icons of art history and a patrimony of humanity.”

That isn’t how parent Venessa Rose Pixton’s 11-year-old son relayed the event to her. Pixton told the newspaper that it wasn’t the paintings themselves so much that offended her, but how Rueda responded in the situation.

“My son felt that Mr. Mateo belittled them,” Pixton told the newspaper. “He said Mr. Mateo even told the class ‘There’s nothing wrong with female nipples. You guys need to grow up and be mature about this.’”

Rueda denied saying that, and he does have his supporters. Parent Kamee Jensen told the newspaper that her daughter never felt uncomfortable but was “very upset that her teacher was in trouble.”

An unnamed school district official told the newspaper that the firing was based on his exchange with students after the artworks were discovered. Rueda’s termination wasn’t official until four days after the Monday, December 4 incident. First, he was given a one-day administrative absence, then upon returning Wednesday received a two-day suspension.

That Friday, a Cache County Sheriff’s officer witnessed Lincoln Elementary School Principal Jeni Buist shredding all of the cards containing nudity, the newspaper reported.

“In a Friday meeting, they gave me two choices: to resign, accepting their terms of my alleged wrongdoing (eliminating any possibility to voice my opinion in the future), or to be terminated with a scathing and defamatory letter. Frankly, neither option was agreeable to me,” Rueda wrote to the newspaper.

Rueda, a Colombian who immigrated to earn a master’s degree in fine art at Utah State University six years ago, says his professional interactions in the Utah area are the true reflection of who he is, not this termination.

“The terms of termination are belittling of my character, and to that end they are a defamation of character,” he wrote to the Herald Journal. “My intent when it comes to the hearing has [nothing] to do money or anything like that, but it has to do with exercising my right to be heard so that I can have a clean name, a clean reputation… This could be something that follows me for the rest of my life.”

As DoD Admits to UFO Program, Shocking Video Released Showing Alien Encounter

The secretive program, which the US Department of Defense has been keeping under wraps, was brought to light in simultaneous reports by Politico and the New York Times on Saturday, citing interviews with people involved or with knowledge of the program, as well as contracts, and Pentagon and Congressional records.

“The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program” was led by former military intelligence official Luiz Elizondo, who resigned from the Pentagon on October 4. In his resignation letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis, seen by Politico and the NYT, he lamented the lack of funding for the project and the fact that it continues to be shrouded in mystery, away from the public eye.

Pentagon spokesperson Dana White, cited by Politico, confirmed that the program existed up until 2012, when it was wrapped up as “there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding,” she said, adding that it was in the Pentagon’s “best interest” to redirect funds.

However, Elizondo said that even without its generous funding, the program was still alive, telling the New York Times that he was working with CIA and Navy officials on the issue up to his resignation. Upon leaving the Pentagon, Elizondo said he left a successor to keep running the program, but did not reveal their name.

Research within the program, which was initially launched at the behest of Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader in 2007, was carried out by private contractor Bigelow Aerospace, a company owned by Reid’s close friend and firm believer in extraterrestrial life, billionaire Robert Bigelow. The company and its subcontractors would store supposed pieces of UFO wreckages in specially repurposed buildings, collect witnesses’ accounts and study those who claimed to have encountered the objects to detect potential physiological changes.

Reid enlisted support of two other lawmakers, Ted Stevens, the late Republican senator from Alaska, and Democrat Daniel K. Inouye, representing Hawaii. Stevens, who was the chairman of the Appropriations Committee, claimed to have had an encounter with an unidentified object when he served in the US Air Force. The program’s funding, Reid believed, should not have not been debated publicly in Congress.

“This was so-called black money,” Reid admitted to the Times.

From 2008 to 2011, Bigelow Aerospace landed nearly $22 million for Congress for the purposes of its extensive research and evaluating threats coming from the objects, according to the contracts cited by the paper.

One of the encounters, examined within the program, was a 2004 incident over San Diego, involving two F/A-18F fighter jets and an unidentified white object. The detailed account of the encounter was given by Chris Mellon, a former member of Senate Intelligence Committee, who is engaged in a new initiative, spearheaded by Elizondo, called To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science.

“Two F-18s approach, the four aviators see that the object has no wings or exhaust — it is white, oblong, some 40 ft long and perhaps 12 ft thick”, Mellon said, describing the incident at the launch of the project that is aimed at deepening the research into the UFOs in October. As the pilots attempted to chase the aircraft it turned toward to the jets only to take a position behind them in a few moments in what Mellon called “a series tumbling maneuvers that seem to defy the laws of physics.”

On an undated video of another incident, provided by Pentagon and published by the Times, an oval-shaped object the size of a plane is seen rotating in the air at a high speed to the apparent disbelief of the pilots, who say that there was “a whole fleet of them.”

Speaking at the conference in October, Elizondo told the public that during the years of managing the program he became convinced that “the [UFO] phenomena is indeed real.”

Reid, who is now retired, also said that he believed that developing the program was a right thing to do.

“I think it’s one of the good things I did in my congressional service. I’ve done something that no one has done before,” he told the Times.

However, a former staffer working with Reid told Politico that the program failed to find “anything of substance,” but bore “reams of paperwork” instead.

“There was really nothing there that we could justify using taxpayer money,” the unnamed official said.
