Google CEO Introduces Robots that Sound Just Like Humans


On Tuesday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed a new advancement in artificial intelligence technology: a voice assistant that sounds just like you and me.

At the annual Google I/O conference for developers taking place this week, Pichai introduced Google Duplex, an artificial intelligence technology that can make phone calls on your behalf with human-like cadence.

​According to Google, Duplex is a “new technology for conducting natural conversations to carry our ‘real world’ tasks over the phone.” The technology uses a machine learning model based on anonymized real-world phone conversations.

Pichai showed off Duplex’s skill by having the “assistant” make reservations with a hair salon and a restaurant in two recorded phone calls. In both cases, the receivers of the call did not seem to know that they were talking to an artificial intelligence voice as the Google assistant inserted natural-sounding “ums” and “uhs” between sentences and was quick to understand context.

In the phone call with the restaurant, the assistant was able to respond to questions posed in a thick accent. In addition, when the employee at the restaurant thought a request for a reservation at 7:00 p.m. was actually for seven people, Duplex was still able to follow through with the conversation as a human would.

“We’ve been working on this technology for many years,” Pichai said during the conference. “We’re still developing this technology, and we want to work hard to get this technology and the expectations right,” he added.

“Where mobile was once the platform for Google’s development and growth, artificial intelligence is now the basis that underpins the full spectrum of Google’s endeavors,” said CCS Insights analyst Geoff Blaber, who attended the conference. “Google is weaving its assistant deeper into services such as maps and making it more immersive through visuals,” he added.

However, not all conference attendees were equally impressed.

“At the end of the day, [the calls were] just booking an appointment at a restaurant. These are fairly easy interactions,” said Creative Strategies’ consumer technology analyst Carolina Milanesi, Mercury News reported.

Google plans on continuing to test Duplex over the summer. Its testing will primarily focus on making restaurant reservations, booking hair salon appointments and asking about holiday hours. It is unclear whether Duplex will be limited to such tasks when it is launched in the future.

Underwater Robots Just Discovered the Largest Dead Zone on Earth

Last week, researchers made a disturbing discovery. With the help of underwater robots, they found the largest ocean dead zone in the world. The area is larger than the size of Scotland and is believed to have been exacerbated by climate change and runoff from the land. The research was published last week in Geophysical Research Letter. “Our research shows that the situation is actually worse than feared – and that the area of dead zone is vast and growing,” said Dr. Bastien Queste, lead author. “The ocean is suffocating.”

“Of course all fish, marine plants and other animals need oxygen, so they can’t survive there,” Queste added. “It’s a real environmental problem, with dire consequences for humans too who rely on the oceans for food and employment.”

As IFLScience reports, researchers have known for some time that there is a dead zone in the Gulf of Oman. Studying the phenomena has been a difficult task, however, mainly due to piracy in the region and geopolitical instability. Both factors have limited research in the area for at least 50 years.

With the help of underwater robots, scientists from the University of East Anglia and Oman’s Sultan Qaboos University were able to study the extent of the dead zone. The robots were sent down to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) for a full eight months. Their task was to survey the region and send back data via satellites. With the newly-acquired data, researchers were able to build up an image of the oxygen levels and the underwater currents that move oxygen around at depth.

The dead zone sits between 200 and 800 meters (650 to 2,630 feet) beneath the surface. Its size is comparable to Scotland, making it the biggest and thickest ocean dead zone in the world. The most concerning part is that it is growing.

When oxygen is absent in a marine environment, the way nitrogen is moved through water is affected. This affects local wildlife, as well as the way nutrients cycle through the ocean. A lack of oxygen can lead to the production of nitrous oxide, which is 300x more potent than carbon dioxide.

Even if action is taken to curb overfishing and clean up Gulf of Oman, the dead zone is expected to grow. Now is the time for every human to participate in sustainable change, to ensure future generations and wildlife inherit a hospitable planet.

According to one self-professing expert on the subject, the idea of having sex with robots is likely a turn-off to many normal people who still desire actual human connection. But the development of sex robot machinery is on the rise, and it won’t be long before these creepy devices are everywhere, he says.

“We’re just doing all this stuff with machines because we can, and not really thinking how this could change humanity completely,” says Noel Sharkey of the Foundation of Responsible Robotics, and the creator of a new documentary called Sex Robots and Us that takes a closer look at the psychology behind sex robots and their potential mass adoption.

“Some people have suggested that sex robots create an attitude of ‘too-easy’ sex which is always available … This could take meaning out of our lives and turn us into zombies.”

Study claims that more than 25 percent of millennials would be happy having sexual relationships with robots rather than real people

Older generations may dismiss such a concept as sensationally out of touch with reality. But recent research put forth by the Paris-based Havas group suggests that, among those polled in the 18-34 age grouping, a shocking 27 percent, or more than a quarter, said they would happily form a relationship with a robot rather than a real person.

With gender confusion running rampant, it won’t be long until there’s an entire sexual orientation or gender classification specifically for people who have a sexual interest in robots. Some are already calling this classification “digisexuals,” identifying people who prefer machinery rather than human flesh when it comes to physical intimacy.

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is sure to grease the wheels in this regard, adding human-like qualities to sex robots that make them seem more “real.” Combined with virtual and/or augmented reality technologies, the sky really is the limit for how sex robots, and the perverse minds behind them, could forever change the nature of human existence.

And it’s not just men who are apparently interested in sex robots. Some females, as we covered earlier in the year, are also reportedly onboard.

Researchers from Harvard University actually spent money looking specifically at “male” sex robots, which they proposed might eventually make real men “obsolete.”

The purpose of the study was to suggest that females could one day no longer need real men in their lives, which is apparently every feminist’s dream come true. In other words, sex robots can and may be used to advance the social cancer known as feminism even further, at the expense of men who will no longer have a place in human society.

“There is no question that sexbots are coming,” says Dr. Neil McArthur from the University of Manitoba, another researcher who’s been investigating the sex robot phenomenon. “People will form an intense connection with their robot companions.”

“These robots will be tailor-made to meet people’s desires and will do things that human partners cannot or will not do. As these technologies advance, their adoption will grow and many people will come to identify themselves as ‘digisexuals’ – people whose primary sexual identity comes through the use of technology.”

Self-Driving Robots Are Delivering Food To Tech Workers In Silicon Valley

Starship Technologies is a robotics startups who recently announced its large-scale deployment of autonomous delivery robots. After more than 100,000 miles of experimental testing, the company plan to roll out 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2018.

Both corporate and academic campuses across Europe and the US can now enjoy the perks of having food brought to them by tiny Starship troopers that afford workers and students convenience. Each robot has six wheels, can move at a maximum speed of 4 miles per hour and is equipped with nine cameras and ultrasonic sensors which allow it to assess its surroundings and read traffic lights. To use the bot, users are required to order via an app, the restaurant then prepares the food and puts it inside the bot. The bot will then make its way to the entrance of a building and the user can then unlock the container by entering a unique code. The delivery takes between 15 and 30 minutes

Since January 2018, the tiny robots have served workers at a software company in Silicon Valley called Intuit. “We are ready to scale this,” Starship’s co-CEO Ahti Heinla explains. “So far, we have done commercial deliveries in other places as well. But these have been limited in the sense that we are still perfecting the service”.

“We aim to get to 99 per cent autonomy but we never have to get to 100 per cent,” he explains. “If there’s an edge case scenario which the software doesn’t know what to do with we can always slow to a stop and have an operator take control of the robot,” says Janus Friis, co-founder and co-CEO.

As artificial intelligence seeps into every aspect of our lives, it comes as no surprise that human couriers are being replaced by robots. What could be more convenient than picking up lunch without the need for human interaction? But not everyone is keen on these little bots cruising down a busy sidewalk. “Sidewalks, I believe, are not playgrounds for the new remote controlled toys of the clever to make money and eliminate jobs,” said Lorraine Petty, an activist with the community group Senior and Disability Action. “They’re for us to walk.” George Wooding, a local activist who uses a wheelchair, added: “You do not need a robot to deliver a ham sandwich. If you want one that badly, just go down and get it yourself.”

In December 2017, lawmakers in San Francisco voted to limit the number of sidewalk-patrolling robots to a maximum of nine across the entire city. In order to combat this, Starship Technologies have started working with city officials and have managed to get five US states to create laws that allow robots to operate on their pavements.

As robots and artificial intelligence (AI) technology begin their takeover, more jobs will be taken away from humans, resulting in entire professions being supplanted by next level advances in modern technology. This is no longer a what-if, but a well-known fact. Robots have started to take away human jobs, and they will continue to do so as they get more sophisticated.

There might be those who think their own jobs are safe from this change, and for the most part, they’re right. But it’s really only a matter of time before technology catches up and will soon start automating things that currently require the time, effort, and attention of actual human beings. When that happens, wouldn’t you rather be prepared?

In one major study, researchers arrived at the conclusion that almost half of all currently existing jobs in the U.S. will be replaced with machines and automation in the next few decades. The technology that will be needed to make this happen has only gotten more advanced, and it’s likely that the percentage of eventual job losses has increased. But no matter what the case may be, there are certain professions that are just destined to be replaced by robots. Here are some of them.

  • Chefs – Burger-flipping robots are just the beginning. In the future, it may be possible to run entire restaurants with nothing more than a single computer and a staff of autonomous machines. Imagine walking into a restaurant where you input your order into a touchscreen, a robot waiter brings it over for you to eat, and you leave without even taking out your wallet because your bill has already been charged to your account. That restaurant could become a reality sooner than you think.
  • Customer Service Agents – Answering machines are a primitive example of the kind of AI technology that will eventually take away Customer Service Agent jobs. With chat robots, service lines can be much more efficient and can be used to reach more people than is currently possible. After all, the number of agents available serves as the hard limit on the number of calls that can be placed or taken at any given time. Robots will change this in a big way, and it’s going to happen eventually.
  • Drivers – Self-driving cars were thought of as impossible just a few years ago, yet now they are fast becoming standard across many developed nations in the world. The technology behind them is not perfect yet, but neither are actual humans when it comes to driving. Public transportation systems will be affected by this change the most.
  • Financial Analysts – Being a financial analyst requires going through numbers and records, trying to find patterns and possible trades, and making sense of it all on a daily basis. This sounds exactly like the type of job perfectly suited to a computer, which can run computations indefinitely as long as the power is running. It would require no food, no water, and no salary, unlike human counterparts. They could become industry standard within the next decade.
  • Journalists – Words on a screen can be rearranged to fit pretty much any agenda or narrative, and the technology that can be used to do this automatically is already available. It’s only a matter of time until full-on publications are filled with nothing more than a bunch of computers running specific algorithms for either news, features or even reviews.
  • Lawyers – Much of a lawyer’s work involves going through documents and tons of data and finding things that may be relevant to the case at hand. All of this grunt work can be done quickly and accurately with computers, and in fact, it’s already happening. Sooner or later, human lawyers will be replaced entirely with algorithmic robot alternatives.
  • Manual Laborers – Just like the chef robot and the restaurant service robot, physically dexterous machines have been invented to handle certain types of manual labor. They’re not as efficient as they need to be yet, but they have already begun to show their potential for use as bricklayers and in performing certain construction jobs.
  • Medics – As skillful as they are, doctors are simply no match to machines when it comes to accuracy, precision, and ability to hold raw information. The medical field could be hit hard by automation in the next decade, and future hospital visits may be with robot doctor appointments.

At 45 years of age, the decades-old Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope was due for an upgrade. This four-meter reflector telescope will be given just that this year. Though instead of a new eyepiece or objective lens, the Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope was instead outfitted with about 5,000 fiber optic sensor-equipped, pencil-sized robots. By adding these onto the telescope, located at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in the Arizona-Sonoran Desert, scientists hope to unravel the secrets of our universe.

These robots serve as the primary component of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), an instrument that will gather data from billions of galaxies. According to, the DESI will work like this: Each of the fiber optic sensors will capture light from objects far off in space. Namely, sequences of galaxies and quasars that have already been programmed into the robots’ systems. The sensors will then carry the light to 10 spectrographs for analysis, which will include measuring the properties of this light to gauge the distance and speed of the object. A new spectrum will be captured every 20 minutes when the light-capturing robots reposition themselves.

Putting all of these calculations together will help us create cosmological map of immense complexity and scale, one expected to span a distance of about 10 billion light years. Moreover, those involved with the DESI believe that it will survey over 30 million galaxies and quasars during the course of its five years of operation.

All this is the result of over 465 researchers hailing from 71 institutions working together to answer the most burning questions about what lies beyond our stars.

“One of the primary ways that we learn about the unseen universe is by its subtle effects on the clustering of galaxies. The new maps from DESI will provide an exquisite new level of sensitivity in our study of cosmology,” explained Daniel Eisenstein, a professor of astronomy at Harvard University and DESI Collaboration co-spokesperson. Brenda Flaugher, DESI project scientist, added: “During its planned five years of operations, DESI will measure velocities of some 30 million galaxies and quasars — supermassive black holes surrounded by a disk of orbiting material. Instead of one at a time, we can measure the velocities of 5,000 galaxies at a time.”

As of writing, the installation of the DESI’s components are underway and expected to finish by April 2019. It will then be seeing first light by September of that same year.

DESI Collaboration co-spokesperson, Risa Wechsler, stated that this upgrade will put the Nicholas U. Mayall Telescope “at the heart” of major cosmological discoveries in the next decade. “The amazing 3-D map it will measure may solve some of the biggest outstanding questions in cosmology, or surprise us and bring up new ones,” remarked Wechsler.

When it was first put to use in 1973, the telescope was one of the most massive optical telescopes on Earth. Thanks to its ability to observe large portions of the sky at a time, the telescope became instrumental in numerous astronomical discoveries.

Among these are the measurements that support the existence of dark energy, and the detection of dark matter based on calculations obtained from galaxy rotations. Together, dark energy and dark matter are said to compose about 95 percent of all the mass and energy found throughout the universe.

Its scope, combined with its sturdiness and size, have made it the perfect candidate to host the nine-ton DESI.

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence and military robotics have some concerned that the development of Terminator-like killer robots will be humankind’s downfall. But that doesn’t seem to worry Eric Schmidt, the former executive chairman of Google parent company Alphabet, who addressed the impact of technology on democracy at the Feb. 16-18 Munich Security Conference.

“Everyone immediately then wants to talk about all the movie-inspired death scenarios, and I can confidently predict to you that they are one to two decades away. So let’s worry about them, but let’s worry about them in a while,“ Schmidt said.

FEMA Camps to be Manned by Robots with Machine Guns


Camo Grayling, a known FEMA camp, was the site of massive training for the Michigan Army Reservists and the Michigan National Guard. They say they are training for GITMO duty. Perhaps this is true.
