‘No mandate’: Tweeters react to Hillary Clinton wading into Brexit debate on Irish border issue

Speaking on the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, the former US secretary of state wrote that Brexit could constitute a real threat to the peace settlement. Clinton made the comments as her husband and former US President Bill Clinton prepares to receive the Freedom of Belfast next week for his role in brokering the peace agreement in 1998.

“We cannot allow Brexit to undermine the peace that people voted, fought and even died for,” Hillary Clinton wrote in the Guardian in her first opinion piece since losing the US presidential campaign to Donald Trump.

“Reinstating the border would be an enormous setback, returning to the ‘bad old days’ when communities would once again be set apart.”

The EU and UK have agreed there should be no hard border once the UK leaves the bloc, but they have until now failed to say exactly how that will be prevented. The EU’s proposal is that Northern Ireland effectively stays in the customs union and bits of the single market. Prime Minister Theresa May said that is “unacceptable” but has so far failed to present an alternative acceptable to the bloc. The implementation of any transition deal is conditional on whether an agreement is reached on the Irish border issue.

Adapting one of her husband’s quotes from the time of the original agreement, Clinton went on:“If short-term interests take precedent over solving the long-term challenges that still exist in Northern Ireland, then it is clear that the hand of history will be both heavy and unforgiving.”

But Clinton’s intervention did not go down well among some of the British public, with many saying she has no mandate to intervene in UK affairs.

The Good Friday Agreement brought an end to 30 years of internal conflict in Northern Ireland, which claimed the lives of 3,600 people. A settlement was reached by establishing a power-sharing administration in Belfast. That, however, collapsed 15 months ago when its leaders, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Republican Sinn Féin, split in a bitter row over a series of issues placing the continuation of the agreement in doubt. The deal has been further threatened by Brexiteers, who claim that it is unfit for purpose upon the UK’s EU exit.

EU spokesman: Bloc stands ready to react ‘swiftly’ to any Trump trade curbs

Margaritis Schinas

The European Union has reacted to US President Donald Trump’s criticism over, what he called, the EU’s unfair trade practices, which the President sees as discriminatory toward the US, explaining by it the expanding US foreign trade deficit.

“We here, in the European Union, believe that trade can and should be win-win. We also believe that while trade has to be open and fair, it has also to be rules-based. The European Union stands ready to react swiftly and appropriately in case our exports are affected by any restrictive trade measures from the United States,” Margaritis Skinas, the official representative of the European Commission (EC) stated on Monday at a press conference in Brussels.

The comment follows US President Donald Trump’s statement made earlier in the day during an interview with UK ITV broadcaster, saying that he had a lot of problems with the European Union in the sphere of trade, calling their practices discriminatory toward the US and explaining that their alleged international currency manipulations had impacted the US trade deficit over the past two decades.

In his tough rhetoric on the issue, Trump announced he would pursue full enforcement of international trade rules, and didn’t rule out the further use of customs tariffs and regulatory action against dumping practices and foreign currency manipulations. This comes after he slapped Chinese and South Korean washing machines and solar panels with a 30-percent import tax.

However, the EU has criticized President Trump-proposed economic policies in the US as well, calling them a ‘threat’ to international trade and economic relations, envisioning higher competition for markets and investment capital from American companies.

In September, the EU’s economic and financial committee stated that the rise of the American protectionism and supply-side reforms are poised to undermine the stability of global trade. The US’ shift toward an export-driven economic model, the EU says, could do significant harm to the international economic ties and suppress the global growth outlook.

Celebrities React With Fury Over Kevin Spacey's Apology To Anthony Rapp

For more news videos visit Yahoo View.

Celebrities and others were swift and blistering in their condemnation of actor Kevin Spacey’s Twitter apology to fellow actor Anthony Rapp early Monday.

Spacey, 58, issued the statement after a BuzzFeed News report alleged that the “House of Cards” star had sexually harassed Rapp when he was just 14. In his statement, Spacey did not deny the incident but said he could “not remember the encounter.”

“If I did behave then as [Rapp] describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior,” Spacey wrote.

The Oscar-winning actor then came out as gay, saying Rapp’s story had “encouraged me to address other things about my life.”

Spacey’s statement was met with fury online, with many accusing him of coming out as a “PR smokescreen.” Others lambasted Spacey for using drunkenness as an apparent excuse for his alleged behavior. Here’s a sampling of the online censure:

In his account to BuzzFeed, Rapp said he was at a party in 1986 when Spacey, then 26, picked him up, “placed him on his bed and climbed on top of him, making a sexual advance.”

Rapp, who did not file a police report at the time, said he chose to share his story publicly now in the hopes of making a difference.

“I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me,” the “Rent” and “Star Trek: Discovery” actor wrote on Twitter.

reACT house is a resilient, adaptive & smart design for ecological living (Video)

Can modern, green housing help traditional cultures retain their ties to their customs and traditional practices? That’s what the reACT house (short for “Resilient Adaptive Climate Technology”) attempts to do as a self-sustaining home for a Denver, Colorado-based couple, who are also members of the Nanticoke Indian Tribe.

Designed and built by University of Maryland students as one entry for this year’s Solar Decathlon, the reACT house is conceived as a modular “kit of parts” that can be adapted to a range of uses and homeowners. In this case, reACT has been configured to include a composting system, hydroponic garden, vegetable garden, and movable “living walls” festooned in plants. The concept also encourages growing one’s own food — something that’s practiced in traditional Nanticoke culture.

The home features a central courtyard with an adjustable glass roof, as well as wall panels that help to collect heat and light from the sun, while also making the living space feel bigger. The urban farming component comes through with the home’s hydroponic garden, an outdoor veggie garden and “living walls” that extend the growing space vertically. Easy composting is achieved via a barrel composter, and a composting toilet.

The home’s interior features a panelized system that allows the structure to be separated from the living green elements, in order to allow for simplified customization as homeowners’ needs change over time. The team also ran virtual simulations to predict the home’s performance.

There’s a solar power system with photovoltaics and battery storage; water is managed via a rainwater harvesting system and greywater treatment system. The team included tech that would help the home attain “net-zero” water use at a residential level, by recycling water as much as possible. All the home’s systems can be adjusted and monitored via smart-home software.

It’s a self-sufficient, smart home, targeted at people with traditional cultural backgrounds, as the designers explain:

Native American home buyers are increasingly seeking sustainable housing and renewable energy technologies to provide cultural renewal, self-sufficiency, economic opportunity, and sustainable returns on investment. At the same time, Native Americans who are living in urban centers and away from their traditional lands have a hard time maintaining their traditions and cultural ties. With reACT, Team Maryland has designed a prototype designed specifically for this market. reACT is in alignment with Native American values, as is evidenced in the home’s carefully designed HVAC, water, solar, living green wall systems, and open-source SmartHouse software.

Admittedly, the home doesn’t look and probably doesn’t function any different from your run-of-the-mill, modern high-tech sustainable smart home. But there’s a lot to admire here: the central courtyard and the modular, panelized approach to to the design, and an attempt to reconcile traditional views of harmonious ecological co-existence with modern technology.

With the modular kit of parts being envisioned as a “lifestyle system” that integrates a home with its environment, the house is less a structure than a holistic system that ‘plugs’ people into their environment, using tech that is adaptable and boosts energy efficiency and self-sufficiency through renewable power generation and food production. Housing like this is needed all over, and it’s great to see built examples of what’s possible. To see more, visit reACT and Solar Decathlon.

MOSCOW, JUNE 23 — NASA astronauts as well as guests and speakers of the STARMUS IV science and arts festival in Norway shared their impressions of RT’s “Space 360” special project, which the channel presented at a panel discussion led by legendary broadcast journalist and host on RT America Larry King.

Commenting on the first-ever panoramic video of Earth as seen from space, filmed in 360 degrees from aboard the International Space Station, the host of Larry King Now and Politicking on RT America, Larry King, responded: “I hope we will be see much more in the future from RT of Space 360.”

Adding his thoughts on the project was well-known American director Oliver Stone. “It’s a video game!” Stone said, while viewing RT’s project through special VR glasses. Popular astrophysicist, author, and recipient of the Stephen Hawking science communication award Neil Degrasse Tyson explained: “I think you know when you feel like you’re there because it affects your balance and your senses and we adjust, so your brain thinks you’re there.”

NASA astronaut and Colonel of the US Air Force Terry Virts shared why he thought the Space 360 project was so important: “People all over the world love space and want to go there. It would be great if more people could visit there, but so far only a few hundred people have been able to do it….The video allows you to share these impressions.”

At a panel discussion titled “Space Journalism 360: New Era,” the host and guide of the project, Russian cosmonaut Andrey Borisenko, and head of RT360 Eduard Chizhikov presented “Space 360,” a collaboration between RT, the Roscosmos state corporation, and Energia Rocket and Space Corporation. The pair also discussed their views on the future of virtual reality.

RT was an a official media partner for the Starmus Festival, while video agency RT Ruptly – the festival’s official global content distributor – carried a livestream of the panel discussions with well-known scientists and Nobel laureates of physics, medicine, and economics.

RT was one of the first news organizations to begin producing videos in the 360-degree format. The special project “Space 360,” which has earned over 22 million views on Facebook and YouTube, is available online as well as at the RT360 app (Google Play, App Store, Oculus Store).
