Mueller’s indictment of 13 Russians perfectly timed to be buried in media cycle

FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller published the indictment on Friday evening – just two days after a high-profile school shooting in Florida. Both factors are likely to reduce the media coverage of the release, which apparently falls short of expectations of a smoking gun to take down the administration of Donald Trump, which many ‘Russiagate’ proponents have been hoping for.

“The fact that Mueller dumped these indictments out today proves that he is kind of hoping to go undercover – as far as is possible – to go undercover with political news like that,” conservative radio host Dave Perkins told RT. “[Mueller] has indicted these Russians knowing that he will never actually have to bother to prosecute them. Which is why he indicted them for peculiar, almost not-named crimes, very low-level things.”

“What has happened is Mueller is setting himself up, having tossed red meat to the base on the left: here is your Russians, here is your conspiracy, see, they have tried to affect the outcome of the election. And then he can fade back into the hedge.”

The indictment targets Russian nationals allegedly involved in a campaign meant to sow discord in America through social media. The document does not mention the hack of the DNC server or the phishing attack on Hillary Clinton campaign chair John Podesta, which both resulted in leaks of sensitive emails. Nor does it indicate that any of the Russians colluded with the Trump campaign or any other individuals in the US. Nor does it claim that the persons indicted were acting on orders from the Russian government. The document says there was no evidence the alleged campaign had any impact whatsoever on the outcome of the election.

Friday afternoon is “a great time to release news if you want to bury the news,” Just Foreign Policy Group director Robert Naiman said, though he doubts this was done intentionally. He added that the new development in the Russia probe is unlikely to tip public perception of it in a significant way. “People who want to put forward the Russia story – many of them will see this as vindication. They won’t care really what the details are.”

“This is an indictment. In the US system this means that a threshold has been met for taking a case to trial. It doesn’t mean anything has been proved,” he said.

The details of the indictment make it a shaky case for trial, media analyst Lionel pointed out, arguing that most of the things the 13 Russians are alleged to have done are not even a crime and had been done by others during the election campaign.

“They were apparently Russian nationals that didn’t say, hey, we are Russian nationals” while conducting their election-related activities on social media, he told RT. “I have never seen an indictment so bereft of citation and case law… I would have loved to argue this one in a motion to dismiss.”

If the indictment was properly covered by the US media, Americans would realize there was not much to it, independent journalist, author, and former Wall Street Journal correspondent Joe Lauria believes, but this is unlikely the way the story will be remembered.

“If these things did happen – they may be guilty of identity theft and certainly didn’t register as foreign agents – but the idea that this had an impact on the election is farcical. And if it was seen that way in the United States, Trump would have nothing to worry about. But the corporate media is going to push this as the smoking gun.”

The reporting, he predicted “will put more fuel on the fire to create more smoke that somehow Russia helped Trump steal this election from Hillary Clinton, which this indictment does not show in any way.”

Phony Mueller Investigation Witch-Hunt Indictments

Phony Mueller Investigation Witch-Hunt Indictments

by Stephen Lendman ( – Home – Stephen Lendman)

The indictment of 13 Russian nationals and entities didn’t rise to the level of a grade B Hollywood script.

They tried shifting attention from Devin Nunes’ damning memo, revealing serious Russiagate FISA abuses.

They were also a way for Mueller to try unjustifiably justifying his witch hunt investigation – proving nothing but Washington’s dark side, its diabolical agenda, its anti-Russia hysteria.

After months of witch hunt investigations and millions of dollars wasted, Mueller indictments proved no improper or illegal Trump team/Russia connections, no Russian meddling in America’s electoral process – what Russiagate is all about.

Announcing the indictments, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said “there is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity (sic).”

“There is no allegation in the indictment that the charged conduct altered the outcome of the 2016 election.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry called the indictments absurd, spokeswoman Maria Zakharova saying:

“(T)he US Department of Justice believes there were” 13 Russian meddlers…”interfering in the US election? Thirteen…versus the budgets of the security agencies that are measured in billions of dollars? Versus the intelligence, counterintelligence and top-notch technologies? Isn’t it absurd? Well, that’s the US political reality nowadays, you know.”

Russian nationals are charged with the “crime” of free expression, using social media and other means to express views, what millions of people worldwide do all the time – in America a First Amendment right.

There’s nothing in the charges about Kremlin meddling in the US 2016 presidential election, nothing about Trump team/Russian collusion to defeat Hillary, no evidence of “impairing, obstructing, and defeating the lawful functions of government” – just baseless claims without proof.

The charges were absurd, offensive and contemptible, smacking of Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany. No legitimate tribunal would accept them.

No Russians will be extradited to America. Putin wouldn’t hand over Edward Snowden to Washington, a US citizen. He won’t let Russian nationals face kangaroo court injustice.

Justice Department indictments would be much ado about nothing if the political and geopolitical stakes weren’t so huge.

They suggest Kremlin involvement to an impressionable public, heavily influenced by daily anti-Russia media propaganda, by Russophobic congressional members.

It’s unknown what Mueller intends next. More witch hunt indictments may follow.

Russiagate is a national disgrace, McCarthyism on steroids against an elected president for defeating  media darling Hillary.

It’s more evidence of US depravity, its contempt for governance the way it should be, its political, moral, ethical and legal degeneracy, its villainy beyond redemption.

Rule of law principles were discarded long ago. Tyranny replaced them heading toward becoming full-blown.

Indicting ordinary US citizens for free expression criticism of government wrongdoing may follow targeting Russian nationals – charges against them wrapped in the American flag to give them a phony veneer of legitimacy.

Friday was a dark day in Washington like so many others preceding it – likely much worse yet to come.

Its road to hell is paved with ill-intentions, endangering everyone everywhere.

Makes sense? Mueller says Russian ‘agents’ organized rallies for both Hillary and Trump

FBI Robert Mueller

The mainstream media’s year-long narrative that the Trump campaign “colluded” with Russian officials continued to crumble Friday, with special counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment claiming foreign agents held anti-Trump, pro-Hillary rallies in 2016.

Mueller’s court filings show 13 Russian nationals attempted to sow chaos throughout the election cycle and beyond; holding competing events for both Trump and Clinton on the same day in the same city.

“On one day, Nov. 12, 2016, the defendants organized a rally in New York to ‘show your support for President-elect Donald Trump’ while at the same time organizing a ‘Trump is NOT my president rally’ that also was held in New York,” writes CNBC.

NBC News also reports that the Russian agents held a “Support Hillary” rally in July 2016 in Washington, DC.

The bombshell revelations throw even more cold water on the liberal conspiracy theory that President Trump and his staff “colluded” with Russian officials to steal the election from Hillary Clinton; just one of many excuses commonly touted by the former Secretary of State following her stunning defeat.

Virginia State Senator Richard Black: Mueller indicted 13 Russians to drag probe out and keep his position (VIDEO)

By indicting Russian nationals and entities for meddling in the 2016 US election, FBI Special Counsel Robert Mueller seeks to drag the probe out for his own gain, Virginia State Senator Richard Black told RT.

Thirteen Russian individuals and three entities, were accused of attempting to advance the presidential bid of Donald Trump and tarnish the reputation of Hillary Clinton with the ultimate goal to “spread distrust towards the candidates and the political system in general.” However, none of the activities described in the indictment were able to sway the vote, US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told media.

According to Black, the lackluster outcome of the ever-widening investigation invokes suspicion that although Mueller knows there’s nothing substantial to uncover, he and his team will continue feeding the media headline-grabbers to keep his rather lucrative job.

“To a certain extent, I think, Robert Muller is struggling to keep alive his position of a special counsel. The special counsel has already earned 7 million dollars. When you become a special counsel, you have an open checkbook for the US Treasury and you are guaranteed to become a mega-millionaire if you simply can drag out the proceedings,” Black told RT.

I suspect that this is just a case of dragging out the proceedings, throwing some indictments on some silly things – not registering as a foreign agent – that typically is not prosecuted, but they are prosecuting it in this case because they are running out of ideas.

The latest twist of the Russia probe saga, which has so far failed to provide any proof of Trump’s collusion with Moscow, indicates that “there is simply nothing there to go after,” Black said. He noted that since both sides appear to agree that the alleged meddling could not have changed the outcome of the election, the probe is essentially “irrelevant.”

The record of US intelligence, which is no stranger to providing “completely fabricated” intel, does not lend much credibility to the “intelligence assessments” over the Kremlin’s alleged role in the election, Black said.

I’m not really impressed, I want facts; I don’t want some generalized conclusions from these intelligence agencies,” he said, noting that if he were Trump, he would ask them to “show precisely” what evidence they have in their hands.

Back believes that what is really on the agenda is to rein in Trump so he will not oppose the hawks in their pursuit of hostile foreign policy towards Russia.

“One of the things they wanted to do is to undermine Donald Trump and to keep him constantly on the defensive against Russia so he cannot do the rational thing, which is to reduce the tensions with Russia, to draw back from the Russian borders,” he said, noting that the “deep state” seeks confrontation with Russia as it allows them to “sell weapons and increase the size of the military.”

Speaking about the claims that Russia-linked operatives spent $100,000 on Facebook ads to promote divisive social and political issues to stir up American voters, Black compared it with throwing a penny to a beggar,” arguing that by “creating chaos” in the election, nobody could have achieved anything, “no matter who they are.”

Mueller indictments: Insane anti-Trumpists call for yet more escalations against nuclear superpower Russia

United States trends Russians

US empire loyalists are so close to telling the truth when they babble about “Russian propaganda”. They are openly admitting that it is wrong to use media to manipulate the ways that Americans think and vote. Now all we need is for them to admit that they themselves do this constantly, and we’ll be on the right track.

The word “Russians” is America’s top trend on Twitter at the time of this writing because of a Mueller indictment of thirteen alleged members of a Russian troll farm, those nefarious supervillains who posted pictures of puppies and promoted Bernie Sanders to “sow discord in the U.S. political system, including the 2016 U.S. election.” Predictably, no evidence is added to cohesively tie the establishment Russia narrative together with allegations of Russia hacking the Democratic party and giving their emails to WikiLeaks, meeting with Donald Trump Jr at Trump Tower, any shenanigans with well-hydrated Russian prostitutes, or indeed anything tying the troll farm to Trump or the Russian government at all.

The focus instead is on people disguising their identities to troll Americans on social media, which we have now learned constitutes a “conspiracy to defraud the United States.” As Disobedient Media‘s Elizabeth Lea Vos rightly points out, it is also behavior that the Hillary Clinton campaign is known to have funded and engaged in extensively.

In response to this underwhelming revelation, Democrats and Never-Trumpers are howling for new cold war escalations with Russia. This despite the fact that this administration has already killed Russians in Syria, greatly escalated nuclear tensions with Russia, allowed the sale of arms to Ukraine (a move Obama refused for fear of angering Moscow), establishing a permanent military presence in Syria with the goal of effecting regime change, forced RT and Sputnik to register as foreign agents, expanded NATO with the addition of Montenegro, assigned Russia hawk Kurt Volker as special representative to Ukraine, shut down a Russian consulate in San Francisco and thrown out Russian diplomats as part of continued back-and-forth hostile diplomatic exchanges.

We are already at an extremely dangerous point in the ongoing trend of continuous escalations with a country that is armed with thousands of nuclear warheads. And these deranged lunatics want more.

“Special Counsel Mueller’s indictments are further proof that Vladimir Putin directed a campaign to interfere with our elections, with the goal of tipping the outcome,” tweeted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “Given these indictments, @realDonaldTrump should implement the sanctions that Congress passed immediately.”

Steven Schmidt, MSNBC analyst and former strategist for George W Bush and John McCain, said that the word “meddling” is not a sufficiently inflammatory word, because “What Russia did is ATTACK the United States. Trump and the Corrupted GOP majority refuse to defend the sovereignty of the country from this outside THREAT from a hostile state actor.”

Congressmen Ted Lieu and Adam Schiff, Senator Bernie Sanders, popular commentators Preet Bharara and Joe Walsh have all joined in the pile-on, along with many, many others, all demanding that the president do more to escalate tensions with Russia even further than he already has.

This is exactly what renowned US-Russian relations expert Stephen Cohen has been warning of: an extremely dangerous mixture of continually escalating cold war tensions coexisting with hot proxy wars between two nuclear superpowers, with a president facing immense political pressures to keep advancing and never, ever back down. A narcissist in the White House being baited by his political enemies into a game of nuclear “chicken”, without the ability to swerve when necessary.

Meanwhile what are Republicans talking about? Why, they’re all crowing about the fact that these Russia revelations began on Obama’s watch and don’t show collusion, of course.

Do you see what is happening here? There is never, ever going to be any proof of Trump-Russia collusion, because that has never been what this is about. We’ve talked about this before: America’s unelected power establishment doesn’t care about impeaching Trump, it cares about hobbling Russia in order to prevent the rise of a potential rival superpower in its ally China. All this lunacy makes perfect sense when you realize this. The US deep state is using the hysterical cult of anti-Trumpism to manufacture support for increasing escalations with Russia, and the anti-Trumpists are playing right along under the delusion that pushing for moves against Russia will hurt Trump.

Well they will not hurt Trump, because there has never been any Trump-Russia collusion. If there had been it would have been picked up by America’s sprawling surveillance networks and leaked to the Washington Post before the end of 2016, and if Trump were a Putin puppet he wouldn’t be continually escalating toward direct conflict with Russia in ways his predecessor Obama never would have dreamed of doing. They aren’t hurting Trump with these loud cries for increased sanctions and hawkishness, they’re imperiling us all.

Democrats, it is time to stop letting them bait you into calling for even more escalations with a nuclear superpower and start calling for detente instead. Republicans, it is time for you to stop putting partisan politics ahead of the survival of our species and start pushing against these dangerous escalations that your president has been playing right along with. These escalations are extremely dangerous and getting ever more so, and in the name of all that is holy I implore you to stop before the unthinkable happens.

On my knees I beg you all to stop this madness, for the sake of my children and yours. You lunatics on both sides of the political divide are going to get us all killed. In God’s name, stop. Please.

Can’t Let It Go: CNN Hung Up on Collusion Despite Mueller Indictments

CNN Newsroom
February 16, 2018
3:01:20 PM Eastern

ROD ROSENSTEIN: Russians also recruited and paid real Americans to engage in political activities, promote political campaigns, and stage political rallies. The defendants and their co-conspirators pretended to be grassroots activists. According to the indictment, the Americans did not know that they were communicating with Russians. <!– VIDEO FILTER – INVALID CODEC IN: –> Now there is no allegation in this indictment that any American was a knowing participant in this illegal activity. There is no allegation in the indictment that the charged conduct altered the outcome of the 2016 election.

PAMELA BROWN: From a political standpoint, I know something that the White House has really latched on to, Sara, is the fact that the indictment says no one wittingly worked with the Russians, that there was some unwitting participation on behalf of Trump campaign associates and aides but no one wittingly. So you can imagine that the White House would want to come out and say, “look, doesn’t this show there’s no collusion?” But can they come out and say that?

SARA MURRAY: Well, I don’t think we can take this to mean there is no collusion in anything that Mueller is looking at. He is looking at these specific instances, these specific contacts and saying these people were not aware they were speaking with Russian, they were not aware they were helping Russian officials.

Now that does not mean that there’s no part of Mueller’s investigation that has not found some kind of collusion. We just don’t have the full sense of what he has been looking at. But you know, I do think in addition to pointing that out, I would be surprised, shocked if the White House did not note rod Rosenstein saying this did not affect the outcome of the election. Unclear to me how he feels like he can draw that conclusion based on this kind of interference. But that is certainly something that will resonate with the President. Because he has viewed these Russian investigations a way to undermine his victory from day one.

BROWN: We know, David Chalian, that appears to be top of mind and it’s curious that rod Rosenstein made a point of saying that today and, as Sara pointed out, how the heck can he — how can you tell whether or not this impacted – did he go to every voter and say, “did that social media post impact your vote.”

DAVID CHALIAN: We certainly can’t tell. We just don’t have the full scope of what Mueller and his team have. We have this piece of it. Lots of new detail but don’t have the full scope. So, it’s unclear how Rosenstein can say that.

3:36:12 PM Eastern

BROWN: Brian, not only does this completely blow up the president’s, quote, hoax argument but the conservative media that echoes him. Of course, the White House will say the President is talking about collusion when he says it’s a hoax, not Russian meddling, but that distinction hasn’t really been made.

BRIAN STELTER: I think his tweet from a few minutes ago shows that he’s still not taking this all that seriously. This is the kind of attack from another country that merits a prime-time address. That was true a year ago. It’s still true today. This is the kind of behavior by Russian propagandists that demand a forceful government response. And we’re not seeing it from the President.

I noticed in the indictment today a Twitter account called 10GOP is mentioned. 10GOP was one of these far right-wing Twitter accounts that promoted Trump and made up a lot of lies. I remember before Election Day getting into arguments with this Twitter troll, not knowing it was a Russian Twitter troll. I remember trying to debunk his lies. I guess it was a waste of time. The point is, I think all of us have to think about our use of these social platforms, whether we are even inadvertently falling for what could be foreign propaganda.

Adam Schiff: FISA Memo Could Lead To Firings Of Mueller, Rosenstein

Stocks are red. Trey Gowdy is abruptly retiring from Congress. Everybody is laughing at what looks like drool dribbling from the edge of Joe Kennedy’s mouth during his rebuttal to last night’s State of the Union.

And along comes Reuters, dropping a bombshell headline that, if accurate, could shift the narrative of the multiple investigations involving Russia and obstruction of justice.

Reuters quoted Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intel Committee, who believes the contents of the four-page memo about allegedly egregious FBI abuses of FISA set for public release in the next several days, could lead to the firing of Special Counsel Bob Mueller, or more likely Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein.

Now the question of course is whether this is a statement of fact – in other words the FISA memo contains cause for termination – or a smoke screen to claim that Mueller’s firing is only made possible by the “political act” that is the imminent release of the FISA memo.

* * *

In an amusing coincidence, Gowdy’s remarks from a Tuesday morning appearance on Fox & Friends now seem eerily prophetic…

REP. TREY GOWDY (R-SC): My Democratic colleagues didn’t want us to find this information. They did everything they could to keep us from finding this information. I think it will be embarrassing to Adam Schiff once people realize the extent to which he went to keep them from learning any of this. That would be the embarrassment…

I mean, going to court to help Fusion GPS so we can’t find out they paid for the dossier, and that they were working for the DNC. That’s a pretty big step to go to court to try to keep the American people from learning something. So, if it were up to Adam Schiff, you wouldn’t know about Hillary Clinton’s email. You wouldn’t know about the server. You wouldn’t know about the dossier. I do find it ironic that he has his own memo right now because if it were up to him, we wouldn’t know any of it.

* * *

In response to the FBI’s “rare public statement” claiming the contents of the memo distort the truth, House Intel Chairman Devin Nunes, Schiff’s Republican counterpart and primary antagonist on the committee, has responded with his own statement dismissing the FBI’s “spurious objections.”

The question on everybody’s mind is whether the memo will prove that the FBI improperly relied on the Steele dossier to obtain s FISA Court warrant on Carter Page. One Twitter user pointed out that Nunes’ statement comes close to confirming that this is indeed the truth.

Developing story.
