Milwaukee Bucks agree to deal with Mike Budenholzer

The Milwaukee Bucks have found their next head coach. The team has reportedly agreed to a deal with prized-candidate Mike Budenholzer.

According to ESPN, the deal is worth four years, and the team discussed the move with franchise centerpieces Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton. The Bucks were knocked out of the Eastern Conference playoffs in a 7-game thriller against the Boston Celtics.

Interim head coach Joe Prunty had been leading Milwaukee following the dismissal of Jason Kidd.

Budenholzer, who experienced considerable success with the Atlanta Hawks prior to the team’s decision to rebuild, is regarded as one of the league’s top coaches. He won the 2014-15 NBA Coach of the Year Award.

The Toronto Raptors were also in the mix for Budenholzer, as he interviewed with the organization on Monday. The Bucks and Raptors, two playoff teams, were both looking for new signal callers.

The Hawks went 24-58 during the 2017-18 season, and they gave Budenholzer permission to talk to other teams. Following the split, Atlanta hired Philadelphia 76ers assistant Lloyd Pierce to serve as their next head coach.

Budeholzer will enjoy the most talented roster he’s had since the Hawks won 60 games during the 2014-15 season. He will also usher in the next era of Bucks basketball as the team opens up a new arena.

YouTuber Turns Abandoned Milwaukee Mall Into Winter Wonderland For 100 Kids

By  Amanda Froelich Truth Theory

Casey Neistat, a Milwaukee native and famous YouTube star, has done his part to make Christmas magical for at least 100 kids this year. This past week, he turned the abandoned Northridge Mall into a winter wonderland for dozens of children with the Boys and Girls Club of Great Milwaukee.

“All I could see was all of my childhood fantasies manifesting,” said Casey. Little Things reports that Neistat partnered with Samsung to surprise the children with electronics and to teach them how they can get creative with electronics.

Before the mall was renovated for this purpose, it was empty, full of broken glass, run-down machines, and eerie, boarded up doors. Now, it is the epitome of cheer. A gingerbread house, an ice-skating rink, and a sledding hill were all installed. And on the special day, professional snowboarders did tricks on the escalators.

Neistat said he was searching for a place to host the celebration when he remembered the abandoned mall. “It just turns out that Milwaukee happens to have a fantastic, huge, empty shopping mall,” he recalled.

The electronics theme was inspired by Neistat’s career on YouTube. Through every video, the free-thinker is able to inspire and educate. Samsung wanted to give the same gift to children, which is why it donated smartphones, microphones and accessories to help them learn how to make videos.

“The reason we bring people like Casey and all these different creators here is because they’re who kids look up to, and their message to these kids — and our message to kids, equally — is that you can be just like these creators. All you need is a phone,” said Paul.

Said Neistat: “I see it as an opportunity, and an opportunity to sort of elevate young kids and let them know that now, because of technology, they’re empowered in ways that they’ve never been empowered before.”

Milwaukee Police Officer Sentenced to Four Years in Prison For Causing Mental Harm to a Child

A former Milwaukee police officer who was convicted of two counts of causing mental harm to a child has been sentenced to four years in prison.

Sonthana M. Rajaphoumi, 46, who was initially charged with soliciting a child for prostitution and two counts of child enticement, received consecutive sentences of two years confinement and two years of extended supervision, according to state court records.

According to a criminal complaint, Rajaphoumi texted and made a sexually suggestive comment to a 15-year-old girl and implied sexual solicitation to 16-year-old girl, both of whom he met while on duty.

When he was hired in 2000, the Fire and Police Commission allowed Rajaphoumi to continue the application process after a police department committee did not recommend him for hiring because of a background investigation.

Cop Who Killed Sylville Smith Found NOT Guilty By Milwaukee Jury

domin

A former Milwaukee police officer was found not guilty on Tuesday of reckless homicide in the August shooting of a 23-year-old black man, which led to two days of violent protests.

Former officer Dominique Heaggan-Brown would have faced to up to 60 years in prison if he had been convicted.

At the prosecution’s request, jurors were also given the option to convict the former officer on one of two lesser offenses — second-degree reckless homicide or homicide by negligent operation of a dangerous weapon — if they were not convinced the District Attorney made the case for negligent homicide, Heaggan-Brown’s attorney told BuzzFeed News. Those lesser charges carry maximum sentences of 25 years and 10 years respectively.

Heaggan-Brown shot Sylville Smith twice on August 13 after a traffic stop, according to the criminal complaint.

Smith fled on foot from Heaggan-Brown and two other officers, and body cam footage later showed that he was armed when the officer first shot him in the bicep. The second shot, however, which hit him in the chest, was fired after Smith had thrown his gun over a fence and he had collapsed on the ground. The jury was shown the footage last week.

“I’m absolutely sick. I’m just going to find the people and support the family now. I don’t know what’s happening in Milwaukee,” Markasa Tucker, 38, a member of the activist group called Uplifting Black Liberation and Community (UBLAC) Milwaukee told BuzzFeed News immediately after the verdict was announced.

In his closing statement on Tuesday, Heaggan-Brown’s lawyer argued that the officer’s actions in a time-sensitive situation were not negligent, Fox 6 Milwaukee reporter A.J. Bayatpour reported.

“Officers are forced to make split-second decisions — split-second, literally, in circumstances that are intense. Twelve seconds. Twelve seconds from the time he leaves the car through the second shot. That’s rapidly-evolving,” Heaggan-Brown’s attorney, Jonathan Smith, said.

Milwaukee County District Attorney Jonathan Chisholm, in his closing arguments, told jurors that the officer knew Smith did not present an imminent threat when he fired his second shot, Bayatpour reported.

“He knew at the time he fired that second shot, when that bullet went ripping through Sylville Smith’s chest, ripping into his heart, ripping into his lung and ending up in his lower back, he knew at that point in time that there was no imminent threat,” Chisholm said.

The judge ordered cameras and cell phones to be banned from the court room during the trial. The jurors deliberated for close to 24 hours before reaching the verdict Wednesday afternoon.

Two Shot By Cops Along Milwaukee’s Lakefront

lakefront5

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s office confirms an officer-involved shooting took place along Milwaukee’s lakefront Sunday night.

A deputy called the shooting into to dispatch around 7:40pm.

Cell phone video appears to show an SUV driving up onto a grassy median at Lincoln Memorial Drive and Water Tower Road. A deputy can be seen with a gun out near the vehicle. Then multiple gunshots are heard.

The Milwaukee Fire Department confirms they transported two individuals who had been shot to the hospital.

Authorities have not confirmed any details about the conditions of the two people who were shot.

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office says it has not been notified of any deaths related to the shooting.

The sheriff’s office said the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department is conducting the investigation. No further information about what happened is expected until sometime on Monday.

Dontre Hamilton: $2,300,000 Settlement for Son of Mentally Ill Man Killed by Cop Approved by Milwaukee Council

Dontre Hamilton (left) and fired Milwaukee Police officer Christopher Manney. Manney fired 14 shots at Hamilton at Red Arrow Park on April 30, 2014. Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn fired Manney over the incident.

The Milwaukee Common Council has approved a $2.3 million settlement for the young son of Dontre Hamilton, the 31-year-old black man who, on April 30, 2014, had been sleeping on a park bench when, after a brief encounter, then-Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher E. Manney shot him 14 times, claiming self-defense.

Red Arrow Park, where Hamilton was killed, is next to City Hall.

“I walked right past him,” Milwaukee Alderman Cavalier Johnson, speaking before the vote during the May 31 City Council meeting, said of seeing Hamilton, NBC News reports. “For me, it’s always weighed on me.”

Alderman Bob Donovan abstained from voting.

“For me to vote in favor of this, I’d feel that somehow I would be saying, and I would be contributing to the belief, that Officer Manney did something wrong,” Donovan said. “And I simply don’t believe that.”

As The Root previously reported, Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn fired Manney, then 38, after the incident for not following departmental procedure. According to Flynn, less than two hours before Hamilton’s fatal encounter with Manney, two police officers had already checked on Hamilton’s welfare at the request of an employee at a nearby Starbucks.

The responding officers were able to engage Hamilton using their departmental procedures for dealing with an “emotionally disturbed person.”

“[Those] officers found no cause for additional police action,” Flynn said.

Manney was allegedly unaware that the officers had already responded to the call when he approached Hamilton armed not only with his service weapon but also with “assumptions about his mental state and housing status,” Flynn said. “Manney treated Halmilton as a dangerous criminal instead of following his training and treating him as an emotionally disturbed person.”

During a 2016 radio interview, Manney said that he couldn’t be racist because his nanny is a person of color.

“Everyone says I’m this huge racist guy, but my nanny is Puerto Rican and Mexican. My kids are of a different race,” said Manney to WISN’s Dan O’Donnell.

Hamilton’s family released the following statement:

The pursuit of this case would not have occurred without the heroic and motivating efforts of the Hamilton family. It was the product of the capacity of Nate Hamilton, Jr., Dameion Perkins, the Coalition for Justice, and their supporters, to communicate their demand for justice in a peaceful and nonviolent manner. It was also the result of the efforts of the Mothers for Justice United, founded by Maria Hamilton. And it happened because the citizens of Milwaukee demanded equality and accountability for Dontre Hamilton’s death.

This settlement would not have occurred without the fact that policymakers and courts recognized that former Milwaukee Police Department Officer Manney violated Dontre Hamilton’s constitutional rights by conducting an illegal pat-down search, which started a chain of events that resulted in the tragic death of Dontre Hamilton. The settlement is a recognition and partial accountability of the violation, and reminds us that no parent, sibling, or child should have to endure such a loss.

Despite the fact that the Hamilton family lost Dontre, they want the community to continue to work with police departments and build relations that encourage the community to trust police officers and feel safe. We must all be assured that when constitutional violations and injuries occur at the hands of law enforcement, every police officer and every citizen will demand accountability and change.

The Hamilton family insists that if more evidence is revealed in the future, Officer Manney should be subjected to the same criminal prosecution as that of any other citizen who unjustifiably took a human life.

This settlement will not bring Dontre Hamilton back, but his legacy will live on and hopefully protect others. The Hamilton family hopes that the community will learn from these events, and that the healing process will continue. Maria Hamilton will continue her work with Mothers for Justice United. Maria Hamilton, Nate Hamilton, Jr., Nate Hamilton, Sr., and Dameion Perkins remain committed to locating and eradicating the injustices which have led to so many needless instances throughout our country that took the lives of citizens, and they will keep fighting for the day when people of all colors can feel as valid and safe as any other.

Maria Hamilton, Nate Hamilton, Jr., Nate Hamilton, Sr., Dameion Perkins and Dontre Hamilton’s son are thankful for the support which they have received over the last three-plus years.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said that he will likely approve the settlement, but he has to check the budget.

Dramatic Video Captures a Milwaukee Cop Run Down a Motorcyclist and the Tense Aftermath

Milwaukee, WI — During a large gathering of motorcyclists in Milwaukee on Saturday, a police cruiser and a biker collided. The subsequent collision sent the motorcycle crashing into the roadside. The collision and the aftermath were both caught on camera.

The Milwaukee police department said they received reports about motorcyclists driving erratically and were responding to those calls. However, no one was reported injured, until after the police showed up.

The incident began after a police officer said he was trying to escort the bikers through downtown. To “escort” them, the officer began dangerously swerving from left to right and across multiple lanes of traffic.

Police say that the biker attempted to pass their officer and the officer accidentally collided with the biker while conducting his dangerous maneuvers. But those in the group say the officer intentionally ran down the biker.

“We was coming from downtown, and you got the police who wanted to escort us out of downtown,” said Rio, one of the bikers.“What the supervisor was doing, he was driving erratically across the freeway so he just, he swerved like this, trying to hit somebody. So as Cuffy was going past, he just turned and hit Cuffy off his bike.”

After the collision, the bikers stopped and confronted the officer. The result was a heated exchange in which one of the bikers got in the face of the officer and started screaming.

After it looked like the situation was about to explode, remarkably, it did not escalate any further. The only one injured was a biker passenger who was taken to the hospital for unknown injuries.

Mystery lion sightings captivate Milwaukee residents

By Brendan O’Brien

MILWAUKEE (Reuters) – Nicole Anderson rode along a busy Milwaukee thoroughfare where she got plenty of stares, double takes and fingers pointing at her not only because she was nude, but because she was painted head to toe like a lion.

Interest in all things lions has reached new heights in Milwaukee as the city’s fixation with its feline version of Bigfoot – does it exist and is it really a lion? – has dominated local news, water-cooler talk and social media.

Milwaukeeans are captivated by the possibility that a lion is roaming their city.

“We found the Milwaukee lion,” proudly proclaimed Ken Kenitz, as he sped along with Anderson, who was covered in bronze body paint while wearing fake white whiskers, fluffy ears and long black fingernails.

Kenitz, a body painter, and Anderson, his canvass, had just finished a photo shoot at several city landmarks as a way to document the lion craze that has consumed Milwaukee after several “lion-like animal” sightings were reported to police during the last week.

Many residents also fear for the lion’s well-being. On Tuesday, a pit bull was shot in the paw when a gunman thought he had the large cat in his sights.

“I would only shoot it as a last resort …. I hope they can tranquilize it,” said Reggie Bonds as he did maintenance work around two stone lions outside of a Milwaukee funeral home. “I am wondering how it got here, but it probably was someone’s pet.”

Wisconsin is one of six states that do not prohibit the owning of a lion as a pet, but Milwaukee ordinance bans ownership of dangerous animals.

Some have taken to social media to compare Milwaukee’s lion to the Cowardly Lion in the movie Wizard of Oz. The Milwaukee lion was “spotted in our parking lot dancing and singing with a girl in red shoes!” the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee tweeted.

A handful of social media accounts posing as the lion have also been created.

“I love gazelles … but there is sort of a manhunt going on right now,” one Tweet said. Playing off the city’s nickname from its brewing history, the tagline of a Facebook account was “Just a cat that hangs out in Brew City.”

Businesses have also gotten into the act, such as the Roman Coin, a tavern on the city’s East Side, that deems itself a “lion safety zone” on its sidewalk sign. A billboard company is also posting messages such as “let’s play hide-and-go-seek” with portraits of lions on boards throughout the city.

“It’s a fun way … to look at what’s going on,” said Kurt Weis, a vice president of Lamar Advertising.

A local print shop has even created and sold more than 90 “I survived #MkeLion” T-shirts.

“We are just having fun with the craze,” said Brad Kuehl, the general manager at Eggers Imprints.

The Milwaukee Zoo, where several lions reside, assured the community that no lions were missing from its facility before it posted a few Tweets making light of the sightings.

“On Wednesdays, Milwaukee County residents receive reduced admission. But remember, that’s humans only,” it Tweeted with a photo of a lion.
