How Complaining Is Literally Killing You & Making You Sick. (Here’s How To Stop)

We all do it — you know, complain about people or situations in our life. We may even call it “venting” in an effort to disguise our complaining, but when it all boils down to it, they’re both the same behaviour.

On the surface, complaining may seem harmless — perhaps even helpful, as venting may make us feel better — but complaining can have serious physical and mental ramifications.

Society itself seems to encourage complaining — we complain about work and being overworked, we complain about lack of time and being too busy to enjoy life, we complain about politics (a favourite past- and present- time activity for many), we complain about family members and issues, we complain about lack of sleep and feeling exhausted, and we love to complain when we get sick— the list goes on and on….

Even if we ourselves don’t complain much (or so we think, though I hope this article makes you take a hard, honest look at your own habits, as it did for me), we all know of people who incessantly complain and how draining it is to be around these “negative Nellies.”

So, how does complaining affect us? From a brain perspective, “synapses that wire together fire together” — this is a basic premise of neuroscience. Every time you complain, you are reinforcing that wiring and making it easier to trigger it. Do it often enough and it can become your default setting. Negative thoughts beget more negative thoughts and you can easily fall into a cycle of negative thinking and chronic complaining.

In addition, misery loves company, so complainers tend to have friends who also complain, which further reinforces the pattern. Complainers also affect people around them. Ever find yourself sympathizing and sharing your own personal similar experience when someone complains to you about something specific? It can happen easily and unintentionally, even to the least complaining and most positive person. Sometimes this can lead to a long conversation comprising entirely of complaints, ie. focused on politics in a negative way or the fear and anger of what is going on in the world. Ask yourself, how do you feel afterwards?

Prolonged complaining leads to stress, and it’s well documented that prolonged stress makes us sick: weakening the immune system, raising blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, and causing a plethora of other ailments.

Scientists have known for years that elevated cortisol levels (the stress hormone) interfere with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, promote weight gain and heart disease, and increase blood pressure and cholesterol. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels also increase risk for depression and mental illness, and lower life expectancy.

How To Stop Complaining

Being human, however, we may need to vent once in a while, so here are some tips to help you avoid over-complaining:

Take time out to cool off and step back from whatever is bothering you so you can diffuse your emotions/anger. Try some deep breathing, go for a walk in nature, hit the gym, meditate, or do something fun or relaxing to calm yourself.

Write down what is bothering you — writing helps us to better understand why we are upset and can help us see the situation with a more balanced perspective.

Take responsibility for your part in the situation; don’t just blame the other person as the wrongdoer. What is the learning for you? What is this situation teaching you? Introspection is helpful for finding balance and being open to a solution or determining if it’s best to let it go at this time.

If you need to vent, let the Listener know ahead of time, so they can prepare themselves or let you know that now is not a good time.

Keep it short — this is very important, as we humans tend to go into stories when we moan and groan. It’s best to keep your share to under 2 minutes to avoid drama and dumping. Ask your Listener to intervene and gently yet firmly stop you if you go past the 2 minutes — you will both be thankful.

Remember that complaining affects your energy, mood, brain activity, and stress levels. If you need to vent, keep it short and sweet, for everyone’s sake — especially your own.

How Sugar Literally Destroys Your Health And Makes You Stupid

Sugar, primarily in the form of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), is the largest source of calories in the United States today. While its mass appeal is vastly rooted in cultures worldwide, its health impacts are severe and often overlooked by the majority.

In his book The Sugar Fix, Dr. Richard Johnson reveals that about 50% of Americans consume as much as half a pound, more than 225 grams, of sugar per day. This statistic is the furthest thing from sweet.

While it’s no secret that sugar is a major player in the obesity, heart disease, and type II diabetes epidemics, most would be shocked to discover that sugar literally makes you dumber as well.

From Our Gut to Our Brain

In his article “Eating Sugar Makes You Stupid,” Dr. Mercola discusses a number of studies pointing to the degenerative effects of sugar on the brain.

One of these studies, published in the journal Neuroscience, showed how a high-sugar diet led to changes in gut bacteria in mice that in turn caused a significant loss of cognitive flexibility, which is a measure of your brain’s ability to adapt to changing situations.

After four weeks of consuming excess amounts of sugar, the mice performed poorly on a variety of tests related to mental and physical function when compared to mice fed a normal diet,” Mercola wrote. 

Kathy Magnusson, a professor in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine and principal investigator with the Linus Pauling Institute, said in an Oregon State University news release:

It’s increasingly clear that our gut bacteria, or microbiota, can communicate with the human brain… Bacteria can release compounds that act as neurotransmitters, stimulate sensory nerves or the immune system, and affect a wide range of biological functions…

We’re not sure just what messages are being sent, but we are tracking down the pathways and the effects.

The findings from the study only further substantiate the growing list of evidence showing the cognitive defects of sugar consumption.

Insulin Resistance and the Brain

In 2012, a team of researchers examined the effects of HFCS on rats’ brains, soon to discover that rats who had been fed a diet high in HFCS faced cognitive impairment and struggled to remember their way out of mazes.

“Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats’ ability to think clearly and recall the route they’d learned six weeks earlier,” Mercola wrote. 

Furthermore, the fructose-fed rats showed signs of resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls your blood sugar and synaptic function in the brain. Because insulin is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, it can trigger neurological processes important for learning and memory.

Consuming large amounts of fructose may block insulin’s ability to regulate how your brain cells store and use sugar for the energy needed to fuel thoughts and emotions.”

What Happened When Rats Were Fed Omega-3 Fats With Sugar

In the same study, a second group of rats was given Omega-3 fats in the form of flaxseed oil and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) in addition to the high-fructose diet. After six weeks, this group of rats was able to navigate the maze better and faster than the rats in the non-DHA group.

The researchers concluded that DHA is protective against fructose’s harmful effects on your brain.

DHA is essential for synaptic function — it helps your brain cells transmit signals to one another, which is the mechanism that makes learning and memory possible.

Unfortunately, your body can’t produce all the DHA it needs, so it must be incorporated into your diet through wild-caught seafood or a supplement like krill oil. Many Americans are seriously deficient in Omega-3 fats, which means they may be especially vulnerable to the harmful effects of excess fructose.

Elevated Blood Sugar Levels Can Be Linked to Memory Loss

Mercola also stresses that even if you don’t have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes suggestive of insulin resistance, higher blood sugar levels appear to have a negative influence on cognition regardless.

One study found that those with higher blood sugar levels scored lower on memory tests.

For each 7-mmol/mol increase in HbA1c (a measure of blood glucose), participants recalled two fewer words on memory tests. Those with higher blood sugar levels also had lower volume of the hippocampus, a brain region linked to memory.

How Insulin Sensitivity Relates to the Development of Dementia

Consumption of any grain, sugar, or starch leads to a rise in blood sugar. To help regulate your blood sugar levels, your pancreas secretes insulin into the bloodstream, which lowers glucose levels.

However, the downside to insulin is that it converts sugar into fat, which in turn can lead to weight gain over time.

If elevated blood sugar levels become your norm, your body eventually requires more and more insulin to be released in order to get the job done. This is when you’ve become insulin resistant, the precursor to type II diabetes.

As you overindulge on sugar and grains, your brain becomes overwhelmed by the consistently high levels of insulin and eventually shuts down its insulin signalling, leading to impairments in your thinking and memory abilities and eventually causing permanent brain damage, among other health issues.

In early 2005, researchers tentatively dubbed Alzheimer’s disease as “type 3 diabetes” after recognizing that in addition to your pancreas, your brain also produces insulin, and this brain insulin is necessary for brain cell survival.

Studies have found that people with lower levels of insulin and insulin receptors in their brain often have Alzheimer’s disease.

Neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter insists that, for this very reason, strictly limiting your consumption of sugar and non-vegetable carbs is one of the most important steps you can take toward prevent Alzheimer’s disease. He cites research from the Mayo Clinic which found that diets rich in carbohydrates are associated with an 89% increased risk for dementia.

Destroying the Gut Destroys the Brain

Your gut, which is teeming with microbial life, also communicates with your brain, via what’s known as the “gut-brain axis.” Embedded in the wall of your gut is your enteric nervous system (ENS), which works both independently of and in conjunction with the brain in your head.

This communication between your “two brains” runs both ways and is the pathway by which foods affect your mood. It’s why anxiety can make you stick to your stomach, for example. However, this gut-brain connection is about far more than just comfort food or butterflies in your stomach. According to Scientific American“The gut-brain axis seems to be bidirectional—the brain acts on gastrointestinal and immune functions that help to shape the gut’s microbial makeup, and gut microbes make neuroactive compounds, including neurotransmitters and metabolites that also act on the brain.”

Therefore, improving your gut microbiome inherently improves your brain function.

Helpful Tips

Obviously keeping your sugar levels below 25 grams per day is ideal in decreasing your chances of dementia or other cognitive defects. For diabetics, pre-diabetics, people who are overweight, or people with high cholesterol or high blood pressure, Dr. Mercola recommends keeping sugar intake to below 15 grams per day.

Consuming naturally fermented foods will also help correct gut microbiome, which in turns help regulate your nervous system and overall health. Naturally fermented foods include sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, and kefir.

Lastly, taking a daily probioitic is also a surefire way to correct gut bacteria levels more efficiently than through food.

‘I’m a f**king legend’: Cheers as police Taser man who picked fight with literally everyone (VIDEO)

The video shows the man, identified as Alan Parker Silver, 34, of Margate, Kent, yelling at commuters, station security and British Transport Police (BTP) in the station foyer. When people laugh at him, he becomes even more aggressive. He pushes one man into a sign, and then starts squaring up to station security in an effort to start a fight, knocking a coffee cup out of another person’s hand while doing so.

His outbursts continue: “You’re all a bunch of f**king mugs. I’m a f**king legend and I won’t f**king have [put up with – Ed.] it.” He then puffs his chest out and then once again says: “I’m a f**king legend.”

A woman who appeared to know him can be heard saying: “Oh my God, you are so embarrassing you f**king p***k.” He can then be seen pushing her out of the way.

Before finally being taken down by police, Silver shouts at commuters: “I’m from Margate, right, and I will kick the f**k out of all of you.” His audience cheers as he falls to the ground.

A BTP spokesperson confirmed the man was later convicted of a public order office, the Mirror reports.

Reading is incredible. It sparks our imaginations, enhances our critical thinking skills, improves our vocabulary, exercises our brain, and much more. While our love for reading in general will never die, it does seem that, these days, its popularity has waned significantly. Many kids today, and plenty of adults too, can’t seem to wrap their heads around sitting and doing ‘nothing’ for any extended amount of time when they could instead experience new and intense sensory information every few seconds instead. ‘Greys Anatomy’ Teaches a Gun Control Lesson Literally Nobody Needed

What did I just watch? I mean, I know I just watched the November 2 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Come on Down to My Boat, Baby,” but, in the larger sense, what did I just watch? It is truly amazing to me that this show is still on the air and, after this episode, I’m convinced that the only ratings it has are the people who watch it just to see what kind of insanity show creator Shonda Rhimes has in store for us each week. Certainly it’s not because anyone needed to be taught this week’s lesson – don’t carry a loaded gun in your vagina. 

18-year-old Danielle enters the emergency room of Seattle Grace Hospital because she passed out while going to visit her boyfriend in jail and now has abdominal pain as well. Upon examining her, her doctors think that a pregnancy is something to consider. After all, she’s an otherwise healthy young woman who fainted. That’s a reasonable assumption. Occam’s Razor pretty much ensures that her doctors didn’t consider the actual cause of her ailment. I’ll be honest. It certainly didn’t occur to me. It occurred to Shonda, though, and that woman has built a television empire.

Maggie: Danielle, so we know that you were at the prison when you collapsed. Do you have any previous medical history? Or are you taking any medications? 
Danielle: No. No. Look, I’m fine. Seriously. Can I just go, please? 
Arizona: No, you still have abdominal pain, and you fainted, so I’m a little concerned that you might be pregnant. 
Danielle: Well, I’m not pregnant, okay? I fainted because — because of the heat. There wasn’t any air in there — Ow! 
Mr. Nelligan: Please. Just run some tests. 
Miranda: I can’t do that, Mr. Nelligan, because I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with you.
Arizona: Any nausea or vomiting?
Maggie: Did you swallow something? If she was smuggling something into the prison, it may have burst. 
Arizona: If you swallowed something, Danielle, you need to let us know. Otherwise, you could get very, very sick. 
Danielle: I didn’t swallow it! 
Mr. Nelligan: I’ve been shot! I’ve been shot! I’ve been shot! 
Miranda: Stay down! Don’t move! -Security! Is everyone all right?! 
Maggie: Abdomen!
Arizona: What?! 
Miranda: Who the hell fired?! 
Maggie: April, you’re bleeding! 
April: Huh? No, I’m fine. I’m fine. It’s — It’s nothing. 
Arizona: Okay. Danielle. Do you have a gun on you? Wait. Hold on. Hold on! This is — This is an exit wound.  No entrance wound. Danielle, did you put a gun in your vagina?

I assume that, after watching that, you have joined me in wondering, what did I just watch?! I have a lot of questions. This isn’t the first time I’ve questioned the anatomical knowledge of the team at Seattle Grace, but are the writers of the show under the impression that a woman’s privates are a place that one can simply place a gun? They have a gross misunderstanding of the size of one of those things. Does Gwyneth Paltrow know about guns in vaginas? Women aren’t really allowed to put weird things in their lady bits without her covering it on her lifestyle blog, and this one seems to have missed her vaginal radar. 

Now, assuming that Gwyneth Paltrow was ok with it and a gun was actually an object that was smuggle-able by that particular method, why would she load the weapon? That’s just poor gun safety. Is Shonda Rhimes under the impression that gun safety is such a problem in America that we needed an episode telling women not to place loaded firearms into our special place, or does she think women are just that particularly stupid? 

After Danielle has surgery to repair the bullet wound from when a gun went off inside of her vagina because she put a loaded firearm inside of her vagina, you guys, the doctor announces that it is a “beautiful 1-pound, 8 ounce… baby pistol.” For the gun aficionado out there, that’s about the weight of a Glock 19, which I feel confident would not fit in one’s lady holster. The doctors then have the bizarre experience of telling her, “Do you have any idea how badly this could have gone? You shot yourself in the belly from inside your vagina, and that was the best-case scenario. You could have shot yourself in the spine. Or you could have shot someone else in the head.”

Shonda, I know you’re not into guns. You’ve made that clear. If you were under the impression you were going to change anybody’s mind by having a woman accidentally shoot herself from inside her vagina, though, I’m afraid you’ve only served to make us ask once again – what did I just watch? And I guess that’s what keeps so many tuning in week after week.

Magic Mushrooms Can Literally ‘Reset’ Brains of Depressed People, Study Finds

(ANTIMEDIA) — A groundbreaking new study shows that magic mushrooms may actually be an effective treatment for people with depression. Researchers from Imperial College London found that patients taking psilocybin, the psychoactive compound that occurs naturally in magic mushrooms, showed reduced symptoms weeks after treatment following a “reset” of their brains.

In the clinical trials, patients with treatment-resistant depression received two doses of psilocybin — 10 mg followed by 25 mg, one-week apart — while researchers focused on changes in brain function before and after treatment with the drug. The findings showed that the treatment produced “rapid and sustained antidepressant effects.”

Comparisons of images of patients’ brains before and after treatment with psilocybin showed reduced blood flow in areas of the brain responsible for processing emotional responses like stress and fear. Researchers found increased stability in another brain network that has been previously linked to psilocybin’s immediate effects, as well as to depression itself.

The small study of 19 people was led by Head of Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, who said:

“We have shown for the first time clear changes in brain activity in depressed people treated with psilocybin after failing to respond to conventional treatments.

“Several of our patients described feeling ‘reset’ after the treatment and often used computer analogies. For example, one said he felt like his brain had been ‘defragged’ like a computer hard drive, and another said he felt ‘rebooted.’

“Psilocybin may be giving these individuals the temporary ‘kick start’ they need to break out of their depressive states and these imaging results do tentatively support a ‘reset’ analogy. Similar brain effects to these have been seen with electroconvulsive therapy.”

In addition, the trials revealed that patients scoring highest on “peak” or “mystical” experience showed a more significant change. This is consistent with findings from previous studies that have shown that such experiences can lead to long-term changes in the behaviors, attitudes, and values of patients treated with psilocybin.

While the world remains captivated by the soap opera which is the United States, all hell is breaking loose in Yemen. In fact, it has been for the past year, yet this reality has been largely blocked out by Western media.

The Arab world’s poorest country has been wracked by a bloody war between supporters of Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Houthi rebels. As a result of the conflict, thousands upon

thousands have been killed, maimed or displaced in the Middle Eastern nation. Nearly 2,000 Yemenis have died from cholera, and close to 370,000 have contracted it. Sadly, that figure is expected to increase to 600,000.

Many foreign countries are involved in the war. In 2015, Saudi Arabia formed a coalition of Arab states to defeat the Houthis, and that coalition now includes Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan, Qatar and Senegal. The United States is also largely responsible for the destruction taking place in Yemen, as it regularly launches air strikes on al-Qaeda and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, or ISIS) targets in the country. Along with France and the United Kingdom, the US has supplied the Saudi-led coalition with weapons and intelligence. There are also reports of American troops being deployed to the area.

Unfortunately for the people of Yemen, aid organizations are having major difficulties delivering food, medicine and other essentials caught in the conflict. Al Jazeera reports that the Houthi siege of parts of the city of Taiz has prevented critical medical supplies from arriving. Additionally, fighting in Aden has made it next-to-impossible for the World Food Programme to deliver aid there.

Scientists Discover Massive Fish That Literally Weighs A Ton (Or More)

Scientists just found a new fish species after it avoided them for centuries.

While sharks and stingrays are often touted as the biggest fish in the sea, their bodies are composed of cartilage and not, surprisingly, the biggest bony fish in the world. That title belongs to the Mola genus of fish, which can reach up to 5,000 pounds, well over two tons. The commonly known Mola Mola, which is also known as an ocean sunfish, was first described in 1758 by Linnaeus, but another species of Mola that was recently discovered is the Mola tecta.

The Mola tecta is also called the hoodwinker sunfish and was discovered after a 4-year search led by Marianne Nyegaard, a Ph.D. student from Murdoch University in Western Australia. Nyegaard originally analyzed 150 DNA samples from sunfish and found that there were four species but only three had been discovered.

“Finding these fish and storing specimens for studies is a logistical nightmare due to their elusive nature and enormous size, so sunfish research is difficult at the best of times,” she said, in a statement. “Early on, when I was asked if I would be bringing my own crane to receive a specimen, I knew I was in for a challenging – but awesome – adventure.”

She and a team of researchers and divers set out to find this mysterious fourth species that had never before been identified despite first being put on the radar by Japanese researchers in Australian water about 10 years ago. The researchers at the time had found genetic evidence of a fourth species, but the creature had not yet been found.

This new team went based off of international tips in pursuing genetic evidence in areas where sunfish are found, and in one lucky instance they were made aware of four sunfish that had washed up on the beach in New Zealand. The tip came from a nearby fishery, and research teams from universities all over the world flew in to take samples. What they all confirmed is that these sunfish were indeed members of the elusive species they had been searching for.

“The new species managed to evade discovery for nearly three centuries by ‘hiding’ in a messy history of sunfish taxonomy, partially because they are so difficult to preserve and study, even for natural history museums,” said Nyegaard.

“That is why we named it Mola tecta (the Hoodwinker Sunfish), derived from the Latin tectus, meaning disguised or hidden.”

Biologists studied the characteristics of this new sunfish species, the first to be discovered within the Mola genus in over 130 years, and found a few differences. The hoodwinker sunfish has a slimmer and sleeker adult body shape and doesn’t develop lumps, bumps, or a snout, like other sunfish, according to the team’s paper published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society. The hoodwinker sunfish is smaller when compared to the more common Mola mola, but can still grow to be a length of 2.5 meters.

Their first discovery of the Mola tecta was groundbreaking because from then on the researchers knew what to look for. They have since been spotted in colder parts of the Southern Hemisphere. We’ve found them all around New Zealand (mostly around the South Island), off Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales (Australia), South Africa and southern Chile.

Sunfish aren’t particularly rare, but studying them has proven to be more difficult than anticipated because of their location and movements. They tend to live solely in areas that humans don’t visit too often and they dive hundreds of meters just to feed. Although they don’t need air like sea mammals, they also tend to surface often to bask in the sun and invite sea birds to pick the many parasites off their bodies. Now that researchers have finally confirmed the existence and wide presence of the fourth sunfish, they can rest easy and excitedly learn even more about this elusive fish.

A new study published in Brain and Cognition revealed that following musical cues to learn a physical task may improve connectivity between important brain regions. To carry out the study, a team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Music in Human and Social Development, Clinical Research Imaging Centre, and Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences, as well as health experts from the Leiden University in The Netherlands, examined 30 right-handed volunteers.

The participants were divided into two groups: the music group and the controls. The participants were then instructed to learn a new task that involved sequences of finger movements with the non-dominant, left hand. The research team found that both groups performed well in learning the task. However, the scientists observed a stark difference between the groups after subjecting them to magnetic resonance imaging.

MRI data revealed that participants in the music group displayed a significant increase in structural connectivity in the contralateral arcuate fasciculus, a fiber tract that links auditory and motor regions on the right side of the brain. In contrast, participants in the control group did not exhibit such changes.

“The study suggests that music makes a key difference. We have long known that music encourages people to move. This study provides the first experimental evidence that adding musical cues to learning new motor tasks can lead to changes in white matter structure in the brain,” lead researcher Dr. Katie Overy quoted in an article published on the Science Daily website.

“This suggests that in the current study, changes observed…were related specifically to the style of training (music-cued) rather than the skill level achieved, leading us to conclude that the use of musical cues promoted a style of motor learning involving different perception-action mechanisms, as opposed to promoting better or faster learning. These results may be especially relevant in a rehabilitation context, for example if the desired outcome is improved fronto-temporal connectivity. Future investigation, ideally with larger numbers of participants, of the effects of different kinds of movement cues and longer training periods, may further clarify the specific effects of using auditory cues during motor learning,” the researchers added.

The results may have positive implications for further research on the rehabilitation of individuals who suffer from reduced movement control, the researchers said. The experts also hope that larger studies evaluate whether music may bolster motor rehabilitation programs such as post-stroke care.

Study backs music therapy’s potential in physical rehabilitation

A study conducted by researchers at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy at New York University Steinhardt and the Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine at NYU Langone, showed that undergoing music therapy may help boost recovery in stroke patients. As part of the research, the team designed a group music-making program called Music Upper Limb Therapy-Integrated and instructed 13 stroke survivors to undergo the program twice a week for six weeks.

The research team observed that the initiative helped reduce impairment in the participants’ upper limbs including hands, arms and shoulders. The experts also observed marked improvements on the patients’ sensory impairment, activity limitation, and overall well-being. According to study lead author Dr. Preeti Raghavan, the stroke survivors cited feelings of ownership of their impaired limbs, and displayed  more spontaneous movements and better emotional engagement. The findings suggest that music therapy may help stroke survivors regain their sense of self by incorporating physical, social and psychological factors. Balancing activities like Tai Chi, yoga and meditation are touted for their ability to promote a sense of well-being and reduce stress, but is there more to it than meets the eye? While these exercises are known for being great ways to relax, new research has shown that their benefits extend far past the ephemeral. The relief mind-body interventions can offer isn’t just mental; in fact, these activities can actually bring about physical changes at the molecular level.

A recent study led by scientists from Coventry University and Radboud University have shown that mind-body interventions can turn back molecular reactions within your DNA that cause disease and depression.

The study’s lead researcher Ivana Buric, from the Brain, Belief and Behaviour Lab in Coventry University’s Centre for Psychology, Behaviour and Achievement, commented, “These activities are leaving what we call a molecular signature in our cells, which reverses the effect that stress or anxiety would have on the body by changing how our genes are expressed. Put simply, MBIs [mind-body interventions] cause the brain to steer our DNA processes along a path which improves our wellbeing.”

Buric also noted that millions of people are already reaping the benefits of mind-body exercises like yoga and Tai Chi, without even realizing how truly beneficial these activities are for their bodies. Buric states that while more studies still need to be done to fully ascertain the scope of what mind-body intervention can do, she believes that their research is a key building block for future research efforts.

Published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology, their study analyzes more than a decades’ worth of research on how mind-body intervention strategies can impact the behavior of DNA. Genetic expression was a focal point of the team’s research, because the way genes are activated to produce proteins can have a system-wide impact. The biological composition of the brain, body and immune system can all be affected by the way genetic proteins are expressed.

In total, the team reviewed 18 studies with a combined 846 participants. The experts determined that when looked at as a whole, the 11 years of data “reveal a pattern in the molecular changes which happen to the body as a result of MBIS [mind-body interventions], and how those changes benefit our mental and physical health.”

It’s known that when a person undergoes a stressful event, their body goes into what’s often known as the “flight or fight” response. This process also triggers the production of a molecule that regulates gene expression, known as nuclear factor kappa B, or NF-kB.

“NF-kB translates stress by activating genes to produce proteins called cytokines that cause inflammation at cellular level,” as Science Daily explains. While this reaction is useful temporarily, when it is consistent over time, it can be quite damaging and increase the risk of diseases like cancer and disorders like depression. It can even accelerate the aging process.

However, the research team found that people who practice mind-body interventions on a regular basis showcase a reduction in the production of NF-kB and related cytokines. In turn, this leads to a decrease and reversal of pro-inflammatory gene expression. Ultimately, this lowers the risk of inflammation-related conditions.

Past research on meditation and other similar activities has also indicated that these exercises can have far-reaching effects on the brain and body. For example, recent research has shown that meditation can help keep your brain youthful and on average, reduce “brain age” by over seven years.  Earlier this year, a research team from Harvard University also found that yoga can elicit positive changes in metabolic function.

These mind-body activities are clearly a force to be reckoned with.
