Mother Sues After Video Shows Cop Execute Her Son as He Held a Knife to His Own Throat

Denver, CO — Two years ago, Denver police officer Michael Traudt shot and killed Paul Castaway, a suicidal man holding a knife to his own throat. The entirely unnecessary killing was captured on video and in spite of this video, Traudt was found justified in the killing.

Last year, Castaways mother filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the case, however, authorities moved to dismiss it. In a small victory this week, a US District Court judge has denied the motion to dismiss the case and it will remain alive.

“If you look at the video, there’s no way a jury doesn’t find that this police officer killed Paul Castaway and violated his civil rights,” the family’s attorney, Matthew Buck said. “That’s why I think they fought so hard to get the case away from a jury. Because axiomatically, it’s murder.”

As reports, along with Traudt, the other defendants in the suit, aside from officer Traudt, were the City and County of Denver, Chief of Police Robert White and Jerry Lara, another officer who responded to the fateful call about Castaway. Wiley Y. Daniel, senior judge for the 10th Circuit, tossed the claims against Denver, White and Lara, as well as ones that targeted Traudt in his official capacity. However, Traudt is still on the hook as an individual in regard to actions for which he wasn’t punished by either the Denver Police Department or the Denver District Attorney’s Office under previous DA Mitch Morrissey.

“The DPD did an internal investigation, and they determined, as they always do, that this murder was justified,” Buck told Westword. “Then Mitch Morrissey determined, as he always does, that this murder was warranted. He will end his term having been feckless and allowing the DPD in this case to ruthlessly murder a citizen as opposed to protecting and serving, as they are supposed to do.”

As TFTP reports, in July 2015, Paul Castaway was in the midst of a severe mental breakdown when his mother called police for help. He had a knife and was threatening to harm himself.

According to Paul’s mother, Lillian Castaway, her son suffered from schizophrenia and struggled with alcoholism. “I called the police for help, not to kill my son,” she said.

When police arrived, however, ‘help’ was the only thing they didn’t do.

In front of multiple witnesses, including children, a DPD officer opened fire on Castaway. He died on the spot, yet police still rolled his dead and bloody body over it and placed handcuffs on him.

“They shot him while the knife was still to his own throat,” said Lillian.

One of the children spoke to the Denver Post and explained what happened. The child explained that Castaway was running when he came to a dead end and then turned to face the police who were in pursuit.

“He held the knife to his neck,” the 15-year-old said. “He came close to them, and that’s when they shot him.”

The boy said Castaway asked officers, “What’s wrong with you guys?” before he was shot. When he saw police shoot the man, the child fainted.

According to the boy’s mother, Guadalupe Barrera, other children witnessed the shooting as well.

“He was probably trying to figure out a place to run. And they didn’t let him go. They trapped him like a mouse, and they killed him,” cousin Rick Morado said.

Months after the shooting, authorities released the surveillance footage which corroborated the witness testimonies. In the graphic video below, we can see Castaway run from police and get cornered. As he turns back toward police, with the knife to his own throat, an officer puts three rounds in him.

As he lay bleeding on the ground, police, instead of pulling the knife out of his hand and rendering first aid, cuff him and sit on his dying body.

Many people will say that the officer was justified in shooting a man who walked toward them with a knife pointed at his throat. However, if police wish to be held to the higher standard that they so often demand, shooting a man who they simply could have backed away from is no way to get there.

Knife-man shouting "Allahu Akbar" sows panic on train in Belgium before arrest

Home » Crimes, Eurabia, Europe, Terrorism » Knife-man shouting “Allahu Akbar” sows panic on train in Belgium before arrest

Sadiq Khan was right, Jihadi terror has truly become “part and parcel of living in European cities”, even though he said it as a good and normal thing.

A knife-wielding man threatening to kill passengers caused panic on a train in the Belgian capital, Brussels earlier this week, local media reported on Friday, citing officials.

The man shouted “Allahu Akbar” (‘God is great’ in Arabic) and “we’re going to kill all of you,” causing panic among the passengers, Belgian media reports.

The man was arrested by police when he departed the train at the Brussels-South railway station.

He was carrying a 28-centimeter knife on his belt, RTL reported. There were no reports of deaths or injuries on the train as result of the incident.

The perpetrator was described as a man in his 40s, known to have a criminal record, including drug-related abuses. The man is now being held in custody on suspicion of links to a terrorist organization.

Turku knife attacker was asylum seeker, presumably targeted women – investigators

“The suspect was seeking an asylum [in Finland],” Robin Lardot of the Central Bureau of Investigation said at a press conference on Saturday.

The attacker arrived in Finland in 2016, Lardot said, adding that it was not clear if the man was denied asylum.

Apart from the prime suspect, Finnish police detained four Moroccan citizens, Krista Granroth of the Central Bureau of Investigation said.

An international arrest warrant was also issued for a sixth person, she added, without disclosing the suspect’s nationality.

The suspect seems to have deliberately targeted women, Granroth said, adding that both killed were women. Four of the six injured are also women, she stated, adding that the two men who were injured seemed to be protecting the women during the attack.

Two people were killed and six injured in the stabbing attack. Police shot and injured the suspect, who is now being treated in the hospital. Police will question the suspect via an interpreter later on Saturday, the authorities added.

Both of the deceased were Finnish citizens, police said earlier, as cited by Yle. UK and Italian citizens are among those injured in the attack, police and investigators say.

Finnish authorities will not raise the security alert level following the Turku stabbing, head of Finnish Security Intelligence Service Antti Pelttari said in a statement, as cited by Yle.

Meanwhile, Finnish MTV channel reported, citing a police source, that the authorities allegedly rejected the attacker’s asylum application.

Eiffel Tower knife attack: French prosecutors launch counterterrorism investigation – source

The man was arrested near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday at about 11:30 pm local time, according to media reports. The intruder was reportedly shouting “Allahu Akbar” when he approached the security officers, who quickly neutralized him, several French media outlets reported.

A man crossed the first security barrier by pushing a security guard and hitting him on the shoulder. He then pulled out a knife and shouted “Allah Akbar,” according to a source close to the investigation, as quoted by AFP. “Operation Sentinel soldiers then ordered him to put his knife on the ground. He placed it there without resistance and was immediately detained,” the source added.

In police custody, the man claimed that “he wanted to commit an attack on a soldier and was linked to a member of the Islamic State jihadist group who encouraged him to carry out the act,” according to another source close to the investigation, AFP reports.

While the incident resulted in no injuries, the site was evacuated. The next morning the tourist site was opened again.

The suspect has not been identified yet, although Le Parisien reported that he is a French citizen who was born in Mauritania in 1998.

While the incident was initially regarded as a common crime, French prosecutors reclassified it as a counterterrorism case and attempted murder of government officials after the interrogation of the intruder, according to media reports citing judicial sources.

France has been in a state of emergency following attacks in Paris in November 2015 which saw over 130 people killed. The measure gave police and administrative authorities more power.

Hamburg knife murderer known as ‘Islamist, mentally unstable’

Grote told a press conference on Saturday that the man, whose asylum claim had been rejected, was known to have been radicalized.

For some reason, he had not been considered dangerous.
The 26-year-old suspect, born in the United Arab Emirates, was “mentally unstable,” the minister said.

He had come to Germany as a refugee, but his asylum application was rejected and he should have been deported in the following days, as soon as his papers arrived, Tagesspiegel reported.

Hamburg Police Chief Ralf Martin Meyer said initial findings showed the attacker had acted alone, adding that it could not be completely ruled out that he had accomplices, Reuters reported.

On Friday evening, police searched a refugee camp in the district of Langenhorn, where the attacker is thought to have lived.

One person was killed and at least five others were injured during the attack at a supermarket in Hamburg’s Barmbek district. The suspect was overwhelmed by passers-by and arrested.

A 50-year-old woman, as well as four men aged 19, 56, 57, and 64 years, are among the injured, Tagesspiegel reported.
According to Grote, none of the survivors’ wounds are life-threatening.

WATCH: Hero Cop Stops a Knife Attack With Love & A Hug — NOT Violence

Bangkok, Thailand — A cop on the other side of the globe just showed the world that cops can actually stop a person armed with a knife — without killing them. Not only was violence not used in disarming the man but the exact opposite — love.

In video after video after video, we see police needlessly escalate situations to deadly force prior to attempting any heroic action, or even less lethal action, or simply backing up when confronted with people holding knives.

Mentally ill individuals have a 1,600% higher chance of being killed by police than anyone else, regardless of race. All too often, we see good people, who are in need of medical help – gunned down by officers because they ‘fear for their lives’ due to a complete lack of training in dealing with the mentally ill.

When the extremely rare case of police officers stopping an armed assailant without killing them is captured on video, the world needs to know. While celebrating the officer(s) who stopped the man without killing him is important – what’s more important is showing other officers and their apologists that it’s possible to solve these problems without deadly force.

The example below is one amazing way of stopping an armed man. And, while it is important to note that not all knife attackers will not respond in a similar manner, this officer clearly assessed the threat and made the decision to spare a life instead of end it.

Behold the power of love.

According to a report in Nine News, the name of the police officer is Anirut Malee, and the assailant is a former musician, who at present is employed as a security guard.

Anirut told Thai Visa News: ‘He used to be a musician but had been working as a security guard for three days and had not been paid. On top of this, he had had his guitar stolen and it was all stressing him out.

Nine News states that Malee while speaking to Sanook News said that the man was very anxious after not being been paid for three days. “I heard him out and sympathized and said I had a guitar to give him, and suggested we go out for a meal together,” Mr. Malee said.

Instead of being killed for his poor decision, the unnamed assailant was sent to a hospital for an evaluation of his mental state and no charges were reported.

Video of the incident has since gone incredibly viral, and for good reason.

To those that don’t think this sort of approach is possible in America. Think again.

The Free Thought Project has actually reported on it.

David Bundy, 39-year-old Roanoke Rapids resident, called 911 in 2015, and said that he had been “hearing voices” and was feeling suicidal. An officer soon arrived at his home, where the man answered the door armed with a knife. The events were all caught on the officer’s body cam. Officer Jamie Hardy first calmly talks to the troubled man, and then uses minimal force to subdue and disarm Mr. Bundy, who is then put into protective custody — which, for once, was actually protective.

As a result, Bundy was able to take a step back from the brink, and now thanks and credits Hardy for saving his life. Not all people with suicidal thoughts are like David Bundy, and Lord knows not all police officers are like Jamie Hardy, but in this case—thanks to a body cam—we can see an ever rare video of a policeman acting like a true peace officer. More importantly, we see a man with a badge acting like a courageous but compassionate human being.

“Nobody wants to hurt anybody else…our job is, you know…protecting people,” Officer Hardy stated.

David Bundy and family had an emotional reunion with Hardy. Bundy was expressing his gratitude while choking back tears saying, “He…he saved my life.” Both of Bundy’s parents were so emotional and grateful they couldn’t get a word out as Bundy’s mother managed to give her son’s savior a tearful hug.

Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Charles Hasty told reporters

“It could have possibly been a deadly force situation, and those skills he used prevented that.”

Those skills were love and compassion.
