The alcohol industry doesn’t want you to understand the link between drinking and cancer the link

The alcohol industry doesn’t want you to understand that alcohol consumption, even in moderate degrees, is strongly linked to the development of a number of cancers. Much like the resistance put up by the tobacco industry, the alcohol lobby and powerful industry trade groups are attempting to persuade the public that the risks are insignificant, although evidence continues to mount.

In a recent study undertaken by global British-led team of experts, the alcohol industry was examined for its efforts to obfuscate and downplay the connection between alcohol consumption and cancer, especially breast cancer. Looking at the organizations that most impact public opinion, the study uncovers what the manipulation of public information looks like.

“Drinks industry organizations often present the relationship between alcohol and cancer as highly complex, implying there is no clear evidence of a consistent link, said the study led by scientists at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet.

Other strategies include denying any relationship exists, or saying inaccurately that there is no risk with moderate drinking, the study found. The industry also seeks to mention a wide range of other real and potential cancer risk factors in an effort to present alcohol as just one of many, it added.” [Source]

Of course this type of industry behavior is typical when so much money and political influence is in play, yet just like revelations about the role of tobacco in cancer, the public deserves to know as much as possible, as soon as possible, and this study highlights the lack of concern industry often has for human health.

According to the Guardian, “while there are more than 200 types of cancer, alcohol is recognised by key medical authorities as a cause of two of the commonest: breast and bowel cancer, which between them result in almost 100,000 new diagnoses a year in the UK alone.”

While cancer may be the scariest possibility to consider, other negative effects of alcohol consumption are actually much more statistically dangerous.

“Binge drinking effects over 20% of the US population, according to a recent report published by the U.S. surgeon general. The 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (USDUH) estimates this to be even higher at 27%. Alcohol misuse in the U.S. contributes to over 88,000 deaths each year. Globally, deaths in 2012 attributed to alcohol consumption stacked up to 3.3 million.

The statistics are even more staggering when you consider USDUH’s estimate that 86% of people 18 or over who live in the U.S. consume alcohol.” [Source]

The alcohol industry study’s conclusion are quoted below. Of note is the inference of how alcohol lobbies are well-connected and sway significant political influence in many nations around the world.

“Our analysis shows that, on the contrary, the global AI is currently actively disseminating misinformation about alcohol and cancer risk, particularly breast cancer [48]. The AI, unlike the tobacco industry, still has significant access in many countries to government health departments [52, 53]. It is also active in the international policy arena, with, for example, partner or stakeholder status at World Health Organization and United Nations meetings relevant to alcohol, on occasions when the tobacco industry is excluded [52]. This study shows that the AI uses similar tactics to the tobacco industry, to the same ends: to protect its profits, to the detriment of public health. The full scale and nature of these activities requires urgent investigation.” [Source]

Warning: Graphic Images That The Egg Industry Does Not Want You To See

Next Story

There are many people out there who consider themselves vegetarians but still eat eggs on a regular basis. I have learned that the correct name for these types of non-flesh eaters is ovo-vegetarians. Generally these people still eat eggs for a variety of reasons, such as: the idea that eggs provide them with the essential proteins, omega 3 fatty acids, and vitamin b12 that they may otherwise be lacking, and the idea that chickens produce eggs anyways and no animal was actually killed or harmed if the egg wasn’t fertilized.

Many people remain unaware of how inhumanely the majority of hens used for egg production are treated. Whether vegetarian, vegan, ovo-vegetarian, plant-based, carnivore, or whatever you choose to identify with, the following list of 21 things the egg industry does not want you to see will make you think twice about your egg consumption…

1. It takes approximately 36 hours for a hen to produce 1 egg.

2. To keep up with the demand, over 300 million hens are used each year by the U.S. egg industry alone.

What About Cage-Free Eggs?

Do not be fooled by companies who advertise “cage-free.” These birds may not be raised in cages like the ones mentioned above, but this is merely just a marketing scam designed to keep up with the consumer demand for more ethical choices. While birds raised in this way do have a slightly better quality of life, all “cage-free” means is the birds are kept in a giant warehouse, packed with thousands of other birds who rarely see daylight, if at all. Many die, their carcasses rot, some get diseases, and other birds fight each other to the death. Other than that, their lives and deaths are pretty much the same.

What Can You Do?

Well, the obvious decision would be to stop eating eggs altogether; if you don’t like something, don’t support it! That being said, I understand some people either don’t want to or still would like to utilize some of the benefits eating can eggs provide. If you want to keep eggs in your diet, one thing you can do to opt-out of this vicious industry is buy organic eggs from pasture-raised chickens from a local farm that you know of and trust. Such hens are free to roam around as they please on a pasture and their feed should be free of antibiotics and hormones.

If you decide to opt-out of eating eggs altogether you can still get your protein and omega 3’s from many alternative sources, including flax and hemp seeds and dark green leafy vegetables. And if it’s the taste rather than the nutritional aspect of eating eggs that keeps you coming back for more, give this vegan egg recipe a shot (pictured below).

Vaccine industry celebrates Disneyland measles outbreak operation as a huge success, seeks to model similar outbreaks for more fear propaganda

Image: Vaccine industry celebrates Disneyland measles outbreak operation as a huge success, seeks to model similar outbreaks for more fear propaganda

(Natural News)
There’s nothing quite as effective as a good outbreak story to keep the masses in line when it comes to vaccines. While resistance to vaccine mandates and the CDC’s vaccination schedule have been steadily growing in recent years, there is no doubt that the mainstream media can manipulate an outbreak story very effectively to frighten some who were unsure into vaccinating their children. This was recently confirmed by a study which sought to determine how best the media can manipulate an outbreak story in the “most compelling” way. The study was published in the journal Vaccine.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 28 December 2014 and 8 February 2015, 125 people were diagnosed with measles after visiting one of the Disney theme parks or having contact with someone who did.

Interestingly, according to that same report, only 45 percent of these patients were unvaccinated, but the mainstream media made sure nobody knew that.

The research team set out to see which stories received the most play, particularly on social media, with a view to using the same strategies in the future.

The authors went on to examine how best to get a pro-vaccine article to “go viral.” Their conclusion? Include “a clear bottom-line message explaining the meaning of vaccination.” (Related: Learn how the mainstream media manipulates the facts at Outbreak.news.)

The team discovered that articles that only contained anecdotes or stories were not likely to move anyone to action, while articles that contained facts and statistics did marginally better. To really get people frightened and motivated, they determined, an article “must clearly explain the bottom line, or gist, of vaccination.”

The study skirts around the issue of what this bottom line is, but one can only imagine that it would run along the lines of: If you don’t get vaccinated you will put others in harm’s way and leave yourself and your children vulnerable to terrible diseases. Vaccination, on the other hand, is 100 percent safe and 100 percent effective.

The problem is, this is simply not true. Vaccines are neither 100 percent effective nor perfectly safe. In truth, they contain ingredients and adjuvants that many people are not comfortable with, and carry the risk of serious side effects. (Related: CDC lies – Measles outbreaks confirmed among children already vaccinated.)

As an example of this, let’s examine the vaccine package insert for the MMR (mumps, measles and rubella) vaccine, as posted online by Merck, the vaccine’s manufacturer.

First off, the growth medium for the vaccine contains recombinant human albumin – the serum albumin found in human blood, derived from aborted fetuses. This would already be enough to disturb the consciences of thousands of potential patients, but you’ll never hear the media breathe a word about it.

Next, there’s the fact that while stating that “safety and effectiveness of mumps and rubella vaccine in infants less than 12 months of age have not been established,” the insert advises that in outbreak situations, health professionals should administer the vaccine to infants between 6 and 12 months of age. What? After they’ve just confirmed that they have no idea if it’s safe to do so?

Then there’s the fact that the insert warns against giving the vaccine to pregnant women, and even stresses that women should not fall pregnant within three months of receiving the shot. How many women are aware of this?

Finally, there are the contraindications and precautions, which are too numerous to list but include:

  • Anaphylaxis can occur in patients allergic to eggs.
  • Vaccination can result in “febrile respiratory illness or other active febrile infection.”
  • Patients who are in any way immunosuppressed cannot receive the shot or they could die.
  • Though the insert claims the vaccine isn’t likely to result in infection, it does warn that “excretion of small amounts of the live attenuated rubella virus from the nose or throat has occurred in the majority of susceptible individuals 7 to 28 days after vaccination,” and that after vaccination the virus can be transmitted to a baby through breastmilk.

And then there’s this:

Death from various, and in some cases unknown, causes has been reported rarely following vaccination with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines.” [Emphasis added]

Bet you never read about that after the Disneyland outbreaks.

Chemical industry lies exposed by their own internal documents

Image: Chemical industry lies exposed by their own internal documents

(Natural News)
The publication of over 200,000 long-hidden documents is now blowing the lid off the corrupt and longstanding (criminal) relationship between regulatory federal agencies and chemical companies. Known as the “Poison Papers Project,” the collection and publication of the documents was initiated this year by Independent Science News and the Center for Media and Democracy – revealing decades of collusion between regulatory government agencies and biochemical industry to actively suppress information on chemical toxicity.

Find out how federal agencies conspired with chemical companies to hide toxin dangers from the public. On the next NaturalHealth365 Talk Hour, Jonathan Landsman and Jonathan Latham, PhD, director of the “Poison Papers” project, expose the secret documents that reveal years of collusion, deceit, and outright fraud – all aimed at deceiving the general public. If you are ready to learn about the stunning depths to which corporations and agencies descended — in order to hide the truth about dioxins and other poisons — you won’t want to miss this explosive show.

The Poison Papers prove that U.S. federal employees – at the highest levels – work to support chemical corporations

The documents collectively known as The Poison Papers – generated between the late 1960s and middle 1990s – consist of over 200,000 pages of study summaries, internal memos, meeting minutes, correspondence and sworn testimonies.

Author and activist Carol Van Strum began collecting and archiving the documents as a result of her 1974 attempt to stop the Forest Service from spraying 2,4,5-T (one of the ingredients in Agent Orange). Many of the documents were obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests, with some being acquired through legal discovery in lawsuits against chemical corporations and various federal regulatory agencies.

The documents became public recently when the online publication The Intercept published an interview with Van Strum.
The scandal involves the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Defense – along with major chemical manufacturers such as Monsanto, Dow, Dupont and Union Carbine. In fact, Dr. Latham notes that the involvement extended to “every chemical company that existed at the time.”

The documents provide a wealth of evidence that both the EPA and the corporations were well aware of the extraordinary toxicity of many chemical products – and schemed to hide this information from the public. Get ready to be stunned, because the information we’re about to release – on the next NaturalHealth365 Talk Hour – is worse than you think. (Be informed – don’t miss this show)

One sickening example: Poison Papers show extensive proof of dioxin toxicity coverups

Dioxins, also known as TCDD, are a related group of persistent organic pollutants that accumulate in the food chain and are stored in fatty tissue of humans and animals. Long-time storage and improper disposal of industrial waste can cause this poison to be released into the environment, where it contaminates human and animal food supplies.

The International Agency for Cancer Research has classified dioxins as “known carcinogens” – with chronic exposure in animals known to cause several types of cancer. Dioxins, states Dr. Latham, may be behind the current “cancer epidemic” – and everyone has been exposed to these toxins to some degree.

Short-term exposure to high levels of dioxins can cause skin lesions and altered liver function. Long-term exposure is associated with immune system impairment, along with disruptions of the developing nervous system, the endocrine system and reproductive functions.
In an outrageous betrayal of trust, agencies not only failed to inform the public of the dangers of dioxins – but also suppressed evidence of fraudulent testing involving the toxins. Also concealed was the fact that dioxins were found in common household and personal products, such as coffee filters and diapers.

Simply put, these chemical companies are about to be exposed for the crimes they’ve committed against humanity. And, many people (in my opinion) need to be held accountable!

This week’s guest: Jonathan Latham, PhD, co-founder director of Bioscience Research Project

Discover the shocking truth about what the chemical industry is hiding from the public – Sun. Sept. 17

Jonathan Latham, PhD, is the editor of Independent Science News and the co-founder and executive director of the Bioscience Resource Project (BRP), a non-profit educational organization which conducts independent scientific analysis of genetic engineering and its risks. The BRP seeks to create a strong scientific foundation for healthy, just and ecologically sound food and agricultural systems.

Dr. Latham holds a Master’s Degree in Crop Genetics, as well as a Ph.D. in Virology. A past postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Genetics at University of Wisconsin Madison, Dr. Latham has published scientific papers in plant ecology, plant virology, genetics and genetic engineering. Russia wants to challenge India’s gemstone industry

Alrosa will be required to sell 10 percent of its diamonds domestically, according to Deputy Finance Minister Alexey Moiseev, as quoted by Bloomberg.

The company would reportedly keep its market prices, but domestic cutters will get an opportunity not to buy the whole contracted volume but only choose individual stones, giving back the rest.

“Cooperation currently is rather limited, and it has to expand,” Moiseev said.

Alrosa, which is the world’s top diamond producer by output in carats, is currently focused on mining due to bigger profits, avoiding cutting and polishing mined stones.

Local cutters, including Russia’s largest Kristall Production, are buying gems from Alrosa at similar terms to foreign firms.

The proposed measure will reportedly make it easier for Russian polishing companies to compete with much larger cutters, like those in India. Indian manufacturers currently process nearly 90 percent of the world’s diamonds, employing around a million people.

According to Moiseev, the Russian government is considering softening excessive controls on the import and export of gems, as well as introducing regulations identifying the origin of diamonds to make the market more transparent.

“The ultimate goal is to get a person to be able to scan a code in the shop and find out where the stone comes from,” the deputy minister said.

The industry still needs to spend more on marketing and promoting of its products due to steadily falling demand.

“Millennials understand what diamonds are and buy them. The question is if the next generation will,” Moiseev said.

How the fishing industry gets away with everything from illegal catches to human slavery

When a fishing vessel can pass off its catch to another boat, it creates a host of ethical and environmental problems.

Fish is enjoying a renaissance these days. It is embraced by growing numbers of Americans as a wholesome dietary choice, packed with desirable omega-6s, and as an ethical source of animal protein (at least, relative to farmed mammals with more developed neocortexes).

Unfortunately, though, fish doesn’t have as clean a backstory as many would like to think. The seafood industry is dark and dirty, fraught with corruption that is only just beginning to be revealed by persistent groups like Greenpeace, Global Fishing Watch, Oceana, and satellite imaging non-profit group called SkyTruth.

In a fascinating article for The New Food Economy, Katarina Zimmer explores one particularly distressing aspect of seafood fraud – transshipment. This is the act of transferring fish from a large ‘mothership’ (or ‘factory’ ship) to a smaller vessel, usually on the high seas far from shore. While transshipment is technically legal for many ships, it is not closely monitored and has many loopholes through which illegal and destructive practices can develop.

What is wrong with transshipment?

As Zimmer explains, the practice allows the deepest parts of the ocean to be plundered because distance from shore refrigeration ceases to be an issue. One GPS tracker revealed a Korean vessel that stayed out at sea for a year and four months. (Greenpeace tells of an appalling two-year record.)

“As coastal countries have drained the fish stocks close to their shores, it has become increasingly lucrative to send fishing fleets into remote waters of the globe. To keep them fishing there for as long as possible, large carrier ships are sent out to resupply them with fuel and provisions and to collect the catch, which is frozen on board and brought back to port.”

This leads to another major problem – horrific human rights abuses. When a ship does not have to dock for months on end, it can lead to cruel and inhumane confinement for countless poverty-stricken, illiterate workers who were forced into signing contracts that they did not understand. (This was revealed in an influential research piece done by the Associated Press in 2015.) As written in TreeHugger about the Thai shrimp industry, “There are reports of 20-hour shifts, beatings, torture, execution-style killings, and enforced methamphetamines to keep going.”

Transshipment allows for illegally caught fish to slip into the supply chain undetected. Part of this problem stems from the fact that records are still mostly paper-based, signed off by captains who could be lying about the amount of fish they’re catching and passing on.

“Of the 300,000 tons of tuna estimated to be illegally harvested in the Pacific annually, over 95 percent is thought to be taken by licensed—not unlicensed—ships. That’s enough to fully load a thousand Boeing 747s each year.”

The organization that supposedly oversees transshipments is called the West and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), made up of 33 countries and territories. It fails to provide adequate oversight, however, because every decision must be made by consensus and not all WCPFC member countries are interested in cooperating. Japan, for example, vetoed a proposal last year to improve port inspections.

Formal observers are supposed to oversee transshipments on carrier vessels, but they’re only required on 5 percent of boats. The job is dangerous, too, because of the potential for bribery and even violence; one American observer, Keith Davis, disappeared mysteriously in 2015).

When observers do point out violations, these are kept secret by the Commission, much to the frustration of many activists. Says Francisco Blaha, an independent fisheries industry consultant:

“What is there to be seen that is kept secret? If I go and steal something, nothing stops the press from publishing a picture of me. If a country steals fish, why can’t we know about it?”

Possible solutions include digitizing records and installing mandatory on-board cameras to monitor transshipments. Smaller ships should be required to have the same GPS transponders that bigger ones do. Pressure from activist groups like Greenpeace must continue, as it has seen great success with Thai Union’s recent agreement to stop transshipments altogether. Other groups, like Pew Charitable Trust, want all transshipments to be banned until the WCPFC is able to regulate it appropriately.

In the meantime, as shoppers and seafood eaters, it is important to avoid anything caught with a long-line, since these ships, bizarrely, are not subject to the same regulations as those that use purse-seine catching techniques. This includes “canned albacore, as well as most fish we find at the wet counter, like ‘sashimi-grade’ bigeye, yellowfin and Bluefin.” Graham Forbes of Greenpeace adds:

“If you’re buying albacore off Bumble Bee or Starkist, it’s likely that it was transshipped at sea and there wasn’t an adequate oversight there and you can’t be confident that they are good products.”

Valuable, too, are seafood activist Paul Greenberg’s 3 easy rules for eating seafood: (1) eat American, (2) eat a greater variety than we currently do, and (3) eat mostly farmed filter feeders.

You can take a look at Zimmer’s entire piece and read Greenpeace’s best tuna guide here. Alternatively, check out my argument for why we shouldn’t even be eating tuna at all.

MSNBC ‘Loses Connection’ Right As Reporter Exposes Oil Industry For Robbing Locals Of Infrastructure Funding

Next Story

Hurricane Harvey has been making headlines all over due to the scale of destruction it has caused in Texas. While covering Harvey for Al Jazeera, reporter Shihab Rattansi told MSNBC host Ali Velshi last week that fossil fuel companies have been robbing locals in the Texas, Louisiana, and Gulf Coast area of infrastructure funds that could have lessened their suffering dramatically.

Shihab says himself that as an “Al Jazeera guy,” his job is to “get to the point.” Al Jazeera has always been known for creating news and media focused on openness, transparency, and calling out corruption — things we don’t often see in North American mainstream media.

In the clip below, Rattansi discusses climate change and the oil industry’s role in it. It must be noted that the oil industry has been responsible for a ton of environmental destruction including pollution, clear cutting, ocean life destruction, and more. Humanity needs to move beyond oil and we have, and have had, all the technologies to do so for decades. But there is also much to talk about when it comes to the climate change agenda that is taking place. Yes our climate is shifting and we need to respond. We also need to stop pollution from things like oil, but understanding the cause, the natural cycles at play, and how to properly prepare, is much more important than creating tax systems and carbon credits. These won’t solve anything.

Rattansi Exposes Big Oil

“It’s pretty clear something has gone wrong here,” Rattansi said, describing the unexpected flooding. “We’re in what’s called the Golden Triangle… the reason why it’s called the Golden Triangle is because this is the first place in the United States that they discovered large quantities of oil. And that led to the Texas oil boom and the money flowing into this region.”

“It’s pretty clear though,” he continued, “money has not been flowing into this region for the infrastructure for the climate change effects that we knew were inevitable because of the oil and gas industry’s activities on this coastline, even after those oil and gas industries were covering up what they knew about climate change in the ’70s.”

“You can’t make a connection between the oil and gas industry and climate change much clearer,” he said. “In the past, oil and gas companies have gotten away with sort of covertly losing their toxic waste in emergencies like this.”

“This is something we’ve been warned about for years by climate scientists, Pro Publica had a piece just last year warning something like this was about to happen in the Houston area… And there aren’t the preparations for it. And yet, so much money has been generated here.”

Just seconds after this exposure, Velshi tells viewers that MSNBC had lost contact with Rattansi, and they went on to cover more rescue footage. While it’s nice to see people being helped, the timing is suspicious, given he was speaking against corporate interests.

There’s one other detail I wanted to bring attention to. As I watched this video for the second or third time, I thought I heard whispers before Rattansi’s audio was cut. I played it back many times, but couldn’t make it out or even determine for sure if that’s what it was, but clearly something can be heard around 4:52 that resembles a whisper. Check it out for yourself and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Keith Kloor exposed as a biotech industry shill for pimping GMOs (and smearing environmentalists)

Image: Keith Kloor exposed as a biotech industry shill for pimping GMOs (and smearing environmentalists)

(Natural News)
Freelance journalist Keith Kloor’s penchant for writing pro-GMO articles goes beyond personal bias. In a recent piece for the Huffington Post, contributor Paul D. Thacker shows just how hard the NYU adjunct journalism professor has worked with “experts” on the GMO industry’s payroll to get corporate talking points published as journalism. Kloor has written pro-GMO propaganda for outlets such as Science Insider, Nature, Slate, and Discover.

A slew of documents that have come to light through freedom of information requests and court proceedings show a very coordinated effort on the part of scientists who are secretly funded by Big Ag, corporate front groups, and reporters aligned with them attempting to present themselves as scientific experts.

It’s one thing to parrot talking points, but Kloor’s deliberate attacks on those who disagree with him have earned him a lot of enemies. When journalists critique GMOs even slightly, his aggressive side can come out, and the name calling and smearing begin. Thacker should know; Kloor called him a “sadistic troll” on his personal blog. He has also gone after NYU Food Science Professor Marion Nestle, NYU Science Journalism Professor Charles Seife, and UC Berkeley Journalism Professor Michael Pollan. He called New York Times columnist Mark Bittman’s work “idiotic or utterly disingenuous” and referred to NYU Professor Nassim Taleb as “an angry a—hole”. In 2013, Columbia Journalism Review wrote: “Keith Kloor makes a beat out of policing frightful coverage of GMOs.”

Thacker also presents the case of registered dietician Carole Bartolotto, who drew attention from Monsanto though her writing expressing concern about GMOs for Kaiser Permanente. Monsanto Executive Vice President Robert Fraley invited her to the firm’s headquarters on the pretense of trying to open up a dialogue, but she declined because she worried the firm merely wanted to buy her opinion. After writing in the Huffington Post that GMO advocates have been spreading the false notion that GMOs are proven to be safe, she drew the ire of Kloor, who subsequently embarked on a quest to discredit her.

“Very good friend” of corporate propagandist Jon Entine

Kloor has yet to explain his involvement with two highly questionable GMO characters, Kevin Folta and corporate propagandist Jon Entine, even though publicly released documents show a close connection and Entine himself has referred to Kloor as a “very good friend of mine.” Emails exposed by U.S. Right to Know show that Kloor was part of a big group of journalists, academics, public scientists and biotech promoters who aimed to spread misinformation across the media to try to sway public opinion of GMOs in their favor and influence USDA regulators and other public officials. Kloor has published stories that fail to mention the financial and other ties between Folta and Monsanto. He has also dodged questions about whether he received any payments or had any expenses covered in exchange for attending industry-funded conferences.

In addition, he has spoken out against public records requests, calling the requests for the financial information of scientists in the public sector “an attack on science.”

Despite what he would like you to believe, Keith Kloor is not a journalist in the purest sense of the word. You see, journalism is meant to be balanced and show all sides of the issues. Kloor is little more than a biotech industry shill who does his best to steer public opinion in favor of GMOs. One only needs to look at his body of work to see a clear pattern of supporting GMOs and painting critics as quacks.

How Monsanto & Bayer Are Trying To Take Over The Cannabis Industry

Next Story

Responsible for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the pesticides that are sprayed on them, Monsanto is on the tips of everyone’s tongues lately. Health conscious individuals are doing everything they can to boycott this company and support others instead, even if that means opting for much pricier organic produce.

There are a number of reasons for their concern, including the fact that no long-term studies have been done to show the potential health effects of consuming genetically modified foods or the high levels of pesticides that came with them. The mere fact that this company is responsible for some of the worst chemicals ever created, including Agent Orange, DDT, asbestos, and aspartame, also contributes to this widespread mistrust.

Last September, Bayer, the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, made a deal to buy out Monsanto for $66 billion, even though Monsanto was voted “the most evil company in the world” back in 2013. Unfortunately, this buyout only strengthened Monsanto’s lobbying power.

This corporate giant has now set its sights on another product, one that has garnered increasing attention lately as laws relax and medicinal uses become better understood: cannabis. Despite claiming otherwise, evidence suggests Monsanto may already have ties to cannabis production, a worrisome connection for anyone who uses cannabis medically or even enjoys an occasional puff.

How Is This Connection Made?

Monsanto and Miracle-Gro already have a business partnership. Hawthorne is a front for Miracle-Gro and has already purchased three of the largest cannabis producers in the business, Botanicare, Gavita, and General Hydroponics. A number of other companies have already received buy-out offers, but have refused.

According to a Hydroponics Lighting Representative, “They want to bypass hydroponics retail stores. . . . When we said we won’t get in bed with them they said, ‘Well, we could just buy your whole company like we did with Gavita and do whatever we want.’ ”

Miracle-Gro CEO Jim Hagedorn has gone so far as to announce his plans for reefer referendums. “Invest, like, half a billion in [taking over] the pot business,” he recommends. “It is the biggest thing I’ve ever seen in lawn and garden.”

One only has to connect the dots to see where this is heading, and it’s not surprising. The cannabis industry is on the brink of a major boom, and it makes sense that a huge corporation like Monsanto would like to get in on the action.

Now What?

Nothing has been decided at this moment, but we can see clearly that it is a possibility, and even if Monsanto/Bayer does take over the cannabis industry, it is not certain that they will create genetically modified strains. Even if they don’t, however, it is up to you to decide if this is a company you would like to support or not. If you actively choose non-GMO products, then you’ll certainly need to do your research to ensure the strains you are getting are not coming from a Monsanto-owned grow business.

Unfortunately, Bayer and Monsanto could create a monopoly on marijuana seeds in the same way we have seen them do with corn and soy. They have an incredible amount of corporate power and through enforcing international patent law, could end up with total control over the cannabis industry, including medicinal cannabis use and research.

Don’t Forget, As the Consumer, You Hold the Power

There will undoubtedly be some backlash against Monsanto — as if they haven’t gotten enough already — but it is absolutely necessary to call out this company for their ruthless business practices. DO NOT SUPPORT Monsanto or Bayer by buying any cannabis products coming from companies that they own. More information about Monsanto’s involvement in the cannabis industry, whether direct or indirect, will surely surface soon, and it is up to you to stay informed and make the appropriate decisions. A safe bet would be to grow your own and keep the seeds, if you are living in an area where this is legal. Spread this information far and wide; we cannot let Monsanto take over the cannabis industry.

Much Love
