China Reportedly Holding Thousands of Muslims in Internment Camps

May 18th, 2018

Via: AP:

Since last spring, Chinese authorities in the heavily Muslim region of Xinjiang have ensnared tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of Muslim Chinese — and even foreign citizens — in mass internment camps. This detention campaign has swept across Xinjiang, a territory half the area of India, leading to what a U.S. commission on China last month said is “the largest mass incarceration of a minority population in the world today.

Chinese officials have largely avoided comment on the camps, but some are quoted in state media as saying that ideological changes are needed to fight separatism and Islamic extremism. Radical Muslim Uighurs have killed hundreds in recent years, and China considers the region a threat to peace in a country where the majority is Han Chinese.

The internment program aims to rewire the political thinking of detainees, erase their Islamic beliefs and reshape their very identities. The camps have expanded rapidly over the past year, with almost no judicial process or legal paperwork. Detainees who most vigorously criticize the people and things they love are rewarded, and those who refuse to do so are punished with solitary confinement, beatings and food deprivation.

WATCH: Mob of Philly Cops Assault Man Holding Crying Baby For Not Paying His $2.25 Transit Fare

Philadelphia man struggling with police while being arrested – screencapture

27 Jun 2015

Transit officers working for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority are under investigation after several of them were recorded by a cell phone pushing and shoving an African American man holding onto a baby for reportedly not paying his $2.25 fare.

According to WPVI, SEPTA officials say they are reviewing their policies and procedures after the video — recorded Thursday night — went viral, calling attention to the officer’s actions.

In the video, three transit police can be seen talking to the man as he stays seated in the car holding a very small child. After another officer arrives and handcuffs the man, he is escorted off the rail car and then can be seen being shoved against the wall with the baby still in his arms.

As bystanders attempt to intervene, more than a dozen officers descend upon the platform pushing the crowd back as one man yells , “He still has his daughter in his hands!” as the baby can be heard crying in the background.

More officers arrive forming a cordon around the cops wrestling with the man and forcing bystanders onto the train and away from the struggle.

According to SEPTA Police Chief Tom Nestel, he was disturbed by his officer’s actions.

“I never want a child’s safety being jeopardized. This is the type of incident that causes us to reflect on what we tell our police officers and how we tell them,” he said in a statement.

China, Holding Treasuries, Keeps ‘Nuclear Option’ in U.S. Trade War

China, Holding Treasuries, Keeps ‘Nuclear Option’ in U.S. Trade War

April 4th, 2018

Via: Reuters:

It took China just 11 hours to retaliate against the United States for proposing tariffs on some 1,300 Chinese products, but Chinese officials are holding back on taking aim at their largest American import: government debt.

In a tit-for-tat response to the Trump administration’s plan for 25 percent duties on $50 billion of Chinese imports, China hit back with its own list of similar duties on key American imports including soybeans, planes, cars, beef and chemicals. But officials signaled no interest for now in bringing their vast holdings of U.S. Treasuries to the fight.

China held around $1.17 trillion of Treasuries as of the end of January, making it the largest of America’s foreign creditors and the No. 2 overall owner of U.S. government bonds after the Federal Reserve. Any move by China to chop its Treasury portfolio could inflict significant harm on U.S. finances and global investors, driving bond yields higher and making it more costly to finance the federal government.

China holding Treasuries ‘nuclear option’ open in trade war with US

As of January 2018, China held $1.168 trillion in American debt, more than a $100 billion increase since the same time last year, but down about 11 percent from the record high above $1.3 trillion in late 2013. That’s 19 percent of all US Treasuries, notes, and bonds held by foreign countries.

Beijing increased its holdings of US debt last year by the most since 2010. China’s foreign exchange reserves were about $3.13 trillion at the end of February, with roughly a third of them held in US Treasuries.

However, if China seeks to manipulate the United States in a trade war, it would be well advised not to sell them, analysts say. “If they wanted to pull the nuclear switch, if they committed to dumping Treasuries, it would have an immediate and temporary impact on money markets in the United States,” said Jeff Klingelhofer, a portfolio manager who oversees more than $6 billion at Thornburg Investment Management, as quoted by Reuters. “But I think it is a bigger hit to the sustainability of what they’re trying to accomplish.”

Jeffrey Gundlach, the chief executive of DoubleLine Capital LP, agrees, saying that US Treasuries can be used by China as a leverage. “It is more effective as a threat. If they sell, they have no threat. It would only escalate the situation and eliminate their leverage,” he told the news agency.

Chinese officials said in January that the government is considering slowing or halting purchases of US Treasuries as they have become less attractive relative to other assets.

Some analysts have said that by buying US Treasuries over the years, China has artificially depreciated its currency. A weaker yuan makes Chinese exports cheaper for buyers, and thus boosts trade.

Cops Shoot Unarmed Dad In The Back, Kill Him For Holding a Phone in His Grandparents’ Backyard

backback

Sacramento, CA – A father was shot and killed in the backyard of his grandparents’ house after police claimed he was the robbery suspect they were searching for and they opened fire because they thought he was holding a gun. They later found out that he was actually holding his phone and was not armed.

Stephen Clark, 23, was shot and killed by police around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night. The confrontation began when officers started their search for a black man wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants who was reportedly breaking into cars in the neighborhood.

A police helicopter was helping conduct surveillance in the area and its officers claimed that they spotted the suspect in the backyard of one of the houses, attempting to break into a sliding glass door with a “toolbar.”  While the officers then claimed that the suspect went back to the front of the home and started looking into the windows of another car, the deputies on the ground entered a backyard and found Clark on his grandparents’ property.

Sequita Thompson, Clark’s grandmother, told the Sacramento Bee that it was normal for Clark and other guests to enter the home through the backyard because “the front doorbell doesn’t work and she and her husband, who is in a wheelchair, have poor mobility.”

The officers claim that when they entered the backyard and confronted Clark, they feared for their lives because they saw an object in his hand, assumed it was a gun and immediately stated started shooting at him.

“He looked back at our officers and faced them. And had something, an object in his hand, and pointed it at our officers,” Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler said. “And at that time our officers believed it was a firearm, and out of fear for their own lives they fired their service weapons.”

However, investigators have confirmed that Clark was not armed with a gun or a toolbar. The only object found next to his body that had been in his hand was his phone.

Thompson said she was near the window when the shooting happened, and she did not hear police issuing any kinds of commands before she heard four consecutive gunshots ring out, and she immediately dropped to the floor and crawled across the house to check on her husband and her 7-year-old granddaughter.

Both Thompson and her husband were not immediately aware that police were responsible for the gunshots—or who they were targeting—and they called 911 to report it. Officers came to the back of their house and asked to come inside and ask them questions.

Thompson complied and said it was not until she decided to get up and look out the window into her backyard that she realized her grandson had been killed.

“I opened that curtain and he was dead,” she said. “I started screaming.”

The officers who shot Clark made no attempt to render aid, and his body was left on the ground until backup arrived. While the officers claimed they opened fire because Clark was facing them with an object in his hand, his family has maintained that he was actually shot in the back.

Shernita Crosby, Clark’s aunt, told FOX40 that she believes he had just entered the yard and was walking to the back door of the house when the officers ambushed him and opened fire.

“In the back, so that means he was running,” Crosby said. “So that means that he was probably saying, ‘This is my grandmama’s house. This is where I live. Leave me alone.’”

The two officers responsible for shooting and killing Clark were placed on a taxpayer-funded vacation, or paid administrative leave, while the incident is investigated. The city’s policy requires Body Camera footage to be released within 30 days of the shooting.

Before he was killed, Stephen Clark was a loving father of two sons, ages 1 and 3. Now his children are left growing up without a father and his family is forced to mourn his death, all because police chose to take his life while accusing him of a crime they still have yet to prove he committed.

U.S. Army Now Holding Drills With Ground Robots That Shoot

U.S. Army Now Holding Drills With Ground Robots That Shoot

February 9th, 2018

Via: DefenseOne:

In a historic first, the Army conducted a live fire exercise with a remote-controlled ground combat vehicle armed with a .50-caliber machine gun. It plans to conduct more exercises with more heavily armed ground robots within the next couple of years.

The demonstration was part of the annual Northern Strike exercise, which took place last July and August at Michigan’s Camp Grayling. Primarily geared toward reserve units, this year’s event debuted an unmanned, heavily armed M113 armored personnel carrier. The driver and the weapons operator followed behind in a slightly larger M577 command post vehicle.

“The scenario here was a complex breach in a minefield,” Paul Rogers, director of the Army’s Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center, or TARDEC, said at the AUVSI conference on Wednesday. “You had engineer platoons with infantry support going in and putting in bangalore torpedos,” long tubes of explosives used to clear mines, he said. The remotely piloted M113 provided suppressive fire as the engineers worked.

It’s the first time that the Army has conducted an exercise with a ground robot providing fire. It won’t be the last. Army leaders have asked for more exercises with bigger guns, said Rogers. “We’re figuring out the details of what leadership expects and what we can deliver.” (For more on the Army’s plans for unmanned and autonomous robots, check the strategy they published last year.)

UN chief thanks Russia for holding Syria peace meeting in Sochi

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has thanked Russia for organizing a conference on the Syrian peace process in Sochi, saying the event will contribute to the peace talks in Geneva. “I believe we are at a meaningful stage in the peace process,” he said. The event concluded with “a statement fully in line with a common understanding” that Russia and the UN have about how progress could be made on settling the Syrian armed conflict, the UN chief said. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura represented the UN in Sochi.

Re: Connecticut church’s interfaith group detained by Israel for holding Palestine flag

The following is a report from Connecticut local news channel News8.

They went to Jerusalem to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and to witness for themselves the sites of the Holy Land. They ended up seeing Israeli army soldiers carting them off to jail.

It was frightening.

“When you see those heavy guns and hear those heavy voices,” said Jhoufran Annababiar, one of five people detained.  “When you see the madness on those soldiers’ faces.”

“They wouldn’t talk to us and explain to us what was going on,” said Reza Mansoor, President of the Islamic Association of Greater Hartford and another person who was detained. “They just confiscated our passports, put five people in a corner, then kind of paraded us down the cobble streets.”

Mansoor and 4 others were held for 7 hours — they are all Muslim.

“We didn’t know what was going on,” he said. “We didn’t think that we had done anything wrong.”

They were arrested when their group from the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme posed for a picture they took while hoisting the Palestinian flag in Jerusalem. There were a total of 29 people in the group, but only the five Muslims were detained.

Church leaders say the annual trip is a chance to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, while exploring the Holy Land.

“It is an opportunity to travel as a group of Christians, as a group of Muslims, as a group of Jews all travelling together, reminding ourselves of our common faith together, our common humanity,” said Steve Jungkite, the senior minister at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme.

What they saw happen to some in their own group was disturbing.

“I was upset that it happened,” Jungkite said.

They say they want to turn their anger into an educational moment. They say what happened to them is similar to what happens to the Palestinian people on a daily basis there.

“There seems to be an escalation of the kind of discrimination that we witnessed,” Jungkite said.

They hope that by sharing their story, they can help to bring justice and a better life in modern-day Jerusalem for Israelis and Palestinians.

“I really wish for that land to live in peace again,” Jhoufran said.

Now that they’re home, they say they are on a mission to do that by continuing to share their story. No one knew why the five members of the group were initially taken away and into Israeli custody.

The trouble happened when the group stopped to pose for a picture in Jerusalem while hoisting the Palestinian flag. Eventually they were told that the Israeli soldiers thought they were trying to incite a riot.

Members of the church group called the American embassy and the offices of Connecticut’s senators back here at home. A lawyer from Jerusalem was able to convince the authorities that the Connecticut group was not breaking any laws and they were released.

They were held about two weeks ago and returned to Connecticut last week.
