CBS Highlights NFL Cheerleader Discriminated Against for Being Christian

CBS Evening News
April 12, 2018
6:47:07 PM Eastern [2 minutes 11 seconds]

JEFF GLOR: She spent her Sundays on NFL sidelines cheering on the Miami Dolphins, but she says she was mistreated by the members of the football community because of her faith. Here’s Mireya Villarreal.

[Cuts to video]

MIREYA VILLARREAL: As a Miami Dolphins’ cheerleader, Kristan Ware was a fan favorite, but claims the league and the team discriminated against her because she was a Christian.

KRISTAN WARE: I got told things like, “You can’t mention God.” And I felt like I was walking on eggshell, but yet a football player can publically announce whatever he believes in. Whether its kneeling for a political indifference or kneeling because he does have a relationship with God and he wants the pray before a game, he has a right to do that.

VILLARREAL: According to a complaint filed with Florida Commission on Human Relations, Ware says she was “blatantly discriminated against based on her religion and gender,” and there was pervasive and severe abuse and harassment by the team director.

WARE: My virginity got brought up, and I said, “you know, I am waiting for marriage.” And they said, “well, as far as we’re concerned, you have taken something that was once upon a time pure and beautiful and you’ve made it dirty.”

VILLARREAL: Ware is one of many NFL cheerleaders who are complaining about double standards tied to their weight, their wardrobe, and their conduct.

WARE: If you’re in a restaurant player, you have to leave if a football player comes in. If you’re going to Wal-Mart, you have to be presentable just in case somebody recognized you and wanted a selfie.

VILLARREAL: Bailey Davis, a former New Orleans Saints cheerleader, fired a complaint after she was fired for a social media post. Ware says her complaints the higher-ups weren’t taken seriously. When you quit the team, you didn’t tell anyone, you just stopped showing up. Why is that?

WARE: I had to make the choice, you know, do I lay down the uniform, even though it’s something that I love, or do I stay on the team and be silenced and basically turn my back on God?

[Cuts back to live]

VILLARREAL: Ware quit before finishing her third year. The Dolphins say a supervisor was reprimanded and apologized to the cheerleading team for one of the incidents in this complaint. The NFL also says that everyone, including cheerleaders, has a right to a respectful and positive work environment free from harassment. Jeff, the state now has six months to finish their investigation.

GLOR: Okay. Mireya, thank you very much for that.

Whale With 29kg Of Plastic In Its Stomach Highlights Our Plastic Pollution Problem

The picture is a representation of a dead whale from ingestion of plastic created by Greenpeace Philippines. Credit: Greenpeace Philippines

By Jess Murray,
This is yet another shocking reminder of the ocean plastic pollution problem, as a dead sperm whale has been found with 29kg of plastic waste inside its digestive system.

Plastic bags and rubbish sacks were amongst the waste items found inside the 32ft whale that washed up on a beach in Spain. After the mammal was found in southeast Murcia in February, an investigation was carried out by the El Valle Wildlife Rescue Centre, who have now concluded that the whale died as a result of being unable to digest the huge amount of plastic waste inside its stomach and intestine.

The investigation also found that the whale weighed seven tonnes when it was found, which is in high contrast to the 45 tonne weight of an average male sperm whale, which ordinarily feeds on large squid, fish and sharks.

This eye-opening discovery has now prompted a campaign highlighting the dangers of dumping rubbish in the sea by the regional Murcia government, which is also backed by the EU’s European Environment Agency and the European Commission’s European Fund for Regional Development.

The environment director-general of Murcia, Consuelo Rosauro, said, “The presence of plastics in seas and oceans is one of the greatest threats to the conservation of wildlife throughout the world, since many animals are trapped in the trash or ingest large amounts of plastic, which end up causing their death. The region of Murcia is no stranger to this problem, which we must tackle through clean-up actions and – above all – citizen awareness.”

According to reports, at least 30 sperm whales are known to have washed up on European beaches in the last few years, which includes 13 in northern Germany in 2016, intensifying the urgent need for us to act now on drastically reducing our plastic consumption, before it’s too late.

FNC Uniquely Highlights Illegal Immigrant Who Bragged About Killing Cops

This week there has been a stark contrast in the selection of illegal immigration-related stories by FNC and by the other networks as Fox and Friends has been covering the trial of an illegal immigrant in California who murdered two police officers in 2014, and bragged about it in court.

By contrast, not only have the other networks ignored the cop killer trial, but CNN’s New Day morning show and CBS This Morning have made a point of giving sympathetic attention to an illegal immigrant who was recently deported, being forced to leave his family in the U.S.

On Thursday’s Fox and Friends at 7:44 a.m. ET, co-host Brian Kilmeade interviewed the aunt of one of the police officers who was murdered. The FNC host introduced the segment: “An accused cop killer showing no remorse in court after the deaths of two California sheriff deputies — Danny Oliver and Michael Davis Jr.”

Then played a clip of the defendant in court smiling and bragging about killing the officers and declaring that he would kill more. Kilmeade reacted: “That piece of garbage an illegal immigrant — an illegal alien, if you will. Has been deported several times leading up to the 2014 shootings, and could potentially get the death penalty if convicted. Keep your fingers crossed.”

The FNC host then brought aboard Pam Davis Owens as a guest, and began by posing: “What is your reaction to the fact is, not only is he an accused cop killer, he revels in it and wants the opportunity to kill more? And he doesn’t even belong in the country.”

The entire segment lasted just over five minutes. The show also ran two briefs on the story — one about a half minute long and the other about 50 seconds.

On the day before on New Day, CNN’s Cuomo interviewed deported immigrant Jorge Garcia who appeared from Mexico, along with his wife Cindy, who called for Congress to create a “pathway to citizenship” for illegal immigrants. After giving the pair a segment of six and a half minutes, the CNN host ended on a note of sympathy and a promise to promote their story:

Cindy, Jorge, I’m sorry that we met under these circumstances, but we’ll keep your story out there because it is an example — there are a lot of Garcias out there — not just by name but by disposition and legal situation. So we’ll stay on this story, and thank you very much for checking in with us.

On the same day, CBS This Morning a pre-recorded report on the subject totaling three minutes, 22 seconds, and filed by correspondent Anna Werner.

And on Tuesday, MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle also devoted a segment to the Jose Garcia story.

Not only was FNC the only network to give attention to the issue of illegal immigrants committing crime this week, but, the first week of January, Fox and Friends reported on the outcome of the trial of the gunman who killed Kate Steinle in San Francisco, while the other network morning and evening newscasts ignored the development.
