Why Shrooms Are Illegal: Study Shows Psychedelic Experiences Make You Resist Authoritarians


According to a new study from the Psychedelic Research Group at Imperial College London, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, psychedelic mushrooms tend to make people more resistant to authority. They also found the psychedelic experience induced by these mushrooms also cause people to be more connected with nature.

“Our findings tentatively raise the possibility that given in this way, psilocybin may produce sustained changes in outlook and political perspective, here in the direction of increased nature relatedness and decreased authoritarianism,” researchers Taylor Lyons and Robin L. Carhart-Harris write in the study.

Experiments in the past have had similar results, but this research team wanted to figure out whether anti-authoritarian, nature-loving people were just drawn to psychedelic drugs, or if it was the substance that brought out these traits in people. To figure this out, the team monitored a group of depressed patients who were given psilocybin and asked a series of questions both before and after the psychedelic experience. The results showed that people who were given the psilocybin did, in fact, change their views in regards to nature and authority.

The study also found that the subjects who took the psilocybin noticed a reduction in their depression symptoms as well. The control group that was not given the psilocybin had no noticeable changes in their attitudes towards nature or authority, and they did not see a reduction in their depression symptoms.

“Before I enjoyed nature, now I feel part of it. Before I was looking at it as a thing, like TV or a painting… [But now I see] there’s no separation or distinction, you are it,” one participant said in the follow-up exam.

Lyons and Carhart-Harris did caution that there was a small number of subjects in their study, so more research would need to be done to back up these findings.

“This pilot study suggests that psilocybin with psychological support might produce lasting changes in attitudes and beliefs. Although it would be premature to infer causality from this small study, the possibility of drug-induced changes in belief systems seems sufficiently intriguing and timely to deserve further investigation,” the study concluded.

However, these conclusions match theories that psychedelic drug users have had for many years, and if true, this could explain why government entities are so afraid of psychedelic drugs.

Terrence McKenna, one of the frontrunners of the modern psychedelic age, understood the nature of this situation very well and toured around the world to speak with audiences about the wonders of psychedelic shamanism.

In one of his lectures, Terrence articulated this psychedelic inquisition quite well by saying:

“All cultures are involved in the culture game and psychedelics transcend the culture game, and whether you’re a citizen of Jerusalem, a Tokyo stockbroker or a tribal islander when you take psychedelic substances your cultural values will suddenly be much more relativistically revealed to you. And that is political dynamite. Psychedelics challenge the assumptions of any cultural or political system and that makes them dangerous to every culture or political system.

So if there’s anything a Marxist dictatorship, a high tech industrial democracy or a theocracy, they can all get together on one thing which is that psychedelic drugs are a knife poised at the heart of community values, well this is just simply nonsense and all the reasons brought forth are a red herring. Psychedelics are among the safest substances known for human ingestion. Considering the depth of their impact on human mental functioning the fact that you pick yourself up 6-8 hours later and go on about your business with an expanded point of view is quite remarkable.”

McKenna’s point is highlighted in recent American history by the counterculture explosion of the 1960s. Psychedelic research began in the late 1950s and became a regular part of the youth culture by the mid-1960s. The explosion of psychedelic use interestingly coincides with the explosion of cultural freedom and anti-establishment sentiments of that decade.

It is for this reason that the American government took quick action to make these substances illegal and to vilify them in the public arena. Laws were passed which imposed strict penalties on anyone involved in psychedelic use, manufacture, or until very recently, even scientific study.

Imagine lying on a hospital bed, closing your eyes, and then being able to hear the doctors announce your own time of death. If this sounds strangely familiar to you, perhaps you’re thinking of the recently released remake of the 90s horror film Flatliners, which is about a group of young doctors who intentionally poison their hearts to find out what life is like after death. But in an eerie twist, it turns out that the movie may not be entirely fictional after all.

Scientists have discovered that even after a person’s body stops showing signs of life, their consciousness continues to work, meaning that in theory, hospital patients are able to hear the doctors announce their time of death.

A team of researchers from New York University Langone School of Medicine recently observed people who suffered cardiac arrest and then came back to life in order to find out more about what happens after we die. The studies author, Dr. Sam Parnia, explained the team’s findings to Live Science: “They’ll describe watching doctors and nurses working and they’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.” Dr. Parnia added that the recollections were all verified by medical and nursing staff.

Doctors have traditionally defined death based on when the heart officially stops beating and blood stops flowing to the brain. “Technically, that’s how you get the time of death – it’s all based on the moment when the heart stops,” Dr. Parnia explained. “Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously. You lose all your brain steam reflexes – your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone.”

The idea that you remain conscious in the moments after death really is like something out of a horror movie, and it becomes even more terrifying when you put yourself in that situation. Imagine what it would be like to hear doctors talking about your death, but not being able to move or respond in any way; no longer living, but thinking as if you were. For these reasons, the revelation that consciousness continues after death is both unsettling and also a significant discovery for the scientific community that will no doubt have a large impact on future research. Earlier this week, the Daily Express published an article on this very topic, and included several stories of individuals who have passed away, come back to life, and then decided to share their experiences with others. One such person, who remained nameless, experienced one of these out of body experiences after a suicide attempt. “I remember feeling terrified,” the person explained. “It was so dark and I could not see anything below me, so it was hard to figure out what was going on.” (Related: A study of 2000 patients reveals that life after death is real.)

While this particular individual had a rather negative life-after-death experience, not all of the accounts that the Daily Express mentioned were bad. Indeed, one person, who goes by the name of Richard, explained that he didn’t feel any pain whatsoever after collapsing from a seizure. Rather, he told about how he felt a sense of peace as he made his way closer and closer to a bright light. Yet another person named Alexander also said that he had a relatively positive experience, feeling a sense of warmth and happiness as he moved closer to what he described as a “bright light almost like at the end of a tunnel.”

This new study, along with all of these accounts of people who have experienced life after death, will no doubt change the way research on the issue is conducted in the future, and it could even change the way in which we define death itself.

Fortunately, this information is becoming more and more accessible and as people unravel their own paths, and let go of what no longer serves them, they are beginning to recognize that if given the right environment to flourish, children are capable of becoming anything they desire. This is a very powerful awareness to have, as it’s the children that will be the leaders of the new Earth.

Research Shows Childhood Experiences Can Permanently Change Our DNA

This new research proves just how much our experiences as children affect our adult lives. Our DNA is the genetic material that determines much of who we are, including our physical characteristics and parts of our personality. It can also determine our health, as some diseases have a very strong hereditary aspect, like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, some cancers, and diabetes.

Yet scientists are now discovering that DNA isn’t always as rigid as we once thought, and we do have the capability to change our DNA. A team of researchers from Northwestern University, led by anthropology professor Thom McDade, have been able to show that DNA can actually be modified by your environment during childhood. The authors of this study also conclude in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that these modifications can affect how or when you develop certain illnesses during adulthood.

By following over 500 children from the Philippines, researchers determined that certain childhood situations can create modifications in genes associated with inflammation, which directly affects how likely we are to develop certain illnesses. These factors included socioeconomic status, an extended period of time with no parent, how long or if the child was breastfed, being born during the dry season, and exposure to microbes in infancy.

So, What Does This Mean?

Essentially, DNA is a long text that uses a four-letter alphabet, which our cells use as an instruction manual for making proteins. The DNA sequence, or order of the letters,   defines the genes that a person has, which remain the same throughout that person’s body. Only some genes, or sentences in the DNA alphabet, are necessary in order for each of the cell types to function.

“We could have genes in our bodies that might lead to some bad outcomes or adverse health outcomes, but if those genes are silent, if they’re turned off due to epigenetic processes, that can be a good thing,” said Thomas McDade, the principal author of the PNAS study.

How Our Environment Affects Our Health

Inflammation is the body’s reaction to infections and wounds, and it plays a crucial role in human health. Many of us are suffering from inflammation and don’t even realize it. Inflammation is a key factor in many fatal diseases that are related to old age, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and dementia.

The body is responsible for igniting an inflammatory response against various threats and threat levels, McDade explains, comparing the job of inflammation to the job of firefighters:

Let’s assume the fire is an infection or an injury and the fire department is the inflammatory response. You want the fire department to come as fast as possible and to use the least amount of water to put out any fire, and then you want them to leave. You don’t want them to come into your house with more firefighters than needed and to hose everything down to put out a small fire; nor do you want them to show up to a massive fire with just a bucket of water. Think of the potential damage in either scenario.

The researchers focused on inflammation for two reasons. First, previous research has shown that when children are exposed to certain environments, it can lead to improper inflammation regulation during adulthood. and they had access to a large body of data that had been compiled from many babies born in the Philippines that they could use to find out the data regarding methylation and inflammation.

This data was comprised of over 3000 pregnant women from the Philippines in 1983. They came from varying walks of life, some had access to clean water, a roof over their head –some didn’t. Some lived in urban areas, some rural. Some had regular contact with animals and some didn’t. The researchers looked at over 500 of these women;s records in order to figure out if their child’s environment while growing up actually led to epigenetic modifications to their DNA and later on to a change in the inflammatory proteins in their blood in adulthood.

Once the women’s children were born the researchers kept track of them and the environments that they were exposed to throughout their lives. At the age of 21, blood samples were taken that were used to measure DNA methylation throughout their genes, as well as inflammation related proteins that have already been associated with cardiovascular disease, and some other age related diseases.

The authors were able to determine that the environment of the children directly affected the level of inflammation-related proteins in their blood during adulthood.


The nutritional, microbial, physiological and social environments that children are exposed to while growing up play a huge role in the physiology and health of the children later in life, according to McDade. He also stresses the importance of prolonged breastfeeding, exposure to microbes and an abundance of family assets that led to the better regulation of the inflammatory proteins. Factors such as the prolonged absence of a parent, not enough exposure to microbes an a lack of family assets was predictive of a higher disregulation of the inflammatory proteins.

These are important factors to consider when raising your children, as their environment growing up will directly impact their health and their potential as adults… but then again, we are capable of changing our DNA, and science is starting to understand that as well, we are capable of anything that we put our minds to.

How To Access Your Inner Strength During Traumatic Experiences

Almost all of us have experienced some kind of traumatic or shocking event.

When I speak of trauma, I don’t always mean extreme situations such as natural disasters, instances of abuse, rape, murder, and accidents. While traumatic experiences often are severe and horrific, they can also be seemingly “mundane” experiences such as losing a job, daily stress, divorcing, and moving somewhere foreign. Trauma also can, and often does, come as a result of the spiritual awakening process in which our entire self-concept begins to crumble and we’re thrown into the abyss of an existential crisis.

Trauma is unique for each person. While we might find changing jobs just another daily task, another person may find the switch highly distressing. We should be very careful about judging other people when it comes to trauma. Every person is different and possesses different levels of sensitivity.

How to Know Whether You’re Going Through a Traumatic Experience

A traumatic experience is anything that severely threatens your emotional, psychological or physical well-being. Essentially, trauma is anything that causes us to feel like we’re losing or have lost control. Feeling traumatized is often accompanied by the experiences of feeling:

  • Numb or disconnected from the world
  • Sad and hopeless
  • Anxious and fearful
  • Hypervigilance (constantly looking out for danger)
  • Confused and unable to concentrate
  • Shocked and/or in denial
  • Angry or rageful
  • Moody and irritable
  • Guilty or ashamed
  • Self-hatred
  • The need to withdraw from others

The danger with coming to terms with the fact that you have been traumatized is the tendency to adopt the role of a victim. While a person may have been victimized in some way, that person is only a “victim” until they make themselves one.

If you have read this list and discovered that you’re going through a traumatic experience, I want to invite you to notice the tendency to start attaching to the idea that you’re a victim. While it’s important that we come to terms with our trauma, it is very harmful, disempowering, and addictive to start thinking of yourself as a victim who is at the mercy of others/life.

The Importance of Tapping Into Your Inner Strength

Trauma is essentially the consequence of an extreme absence of power. But here’s the liberating truth: power comes from within. Whatever goes on outside of you is nothing compared to the courage, clarity, and compassion that already lies within your soul.

Learning how to tap into your inner strength – the power of your

soul – is really about developing self-compassion. When you’re able to access this self-compassion, you will discover that nothing can truly harm you, because nothing can take away the untouchable divine strength of your inner Self. And when you realize that nothing can truly hurt you at your core, you will feel empowered and able to deal with anything that comes your way.

How to Access Your Inner Strength During Traumatic Experiences

Like most people, I have gone through traumatic experiences such as emotional abuse, having a drug addicted mother, going through an awakening process, dealing with mentally ill family members, feeling like I’m going crazy myself, among many other things.

Two of the most powerful and life-changing tools I discovered during these dark times were self-compassion and thought inquiry. Learning to take care of myself with loving kindness and discovering that believing thoughts actually create suffering freed me from a lot of anger, fear, and shame.

Here are some key ways to access your inner strength during periods of extreme stress, illness, loss, vulnerability, and pain.

1. Treat yourself with love and compassion

Notice the tendency for the inner critic to start judging you for “not having it all together” or for “being weak.” Counteract any critical thought with compassionate and encouraging words. For example, you might say to yourself, “It’s OK to feel this way,” “I’m doing the best I can,” “I love you no matter what,” or “I’m here for you.” How would you speak to a child who has experienced what you have gone through? If it helps, address your kindness to your inner child. Treat yourself with love and compassion.

2. Allow yourself to feel what you feel

One of the greatest causes of long-term suffering is repression of our emotions. While it’s not always possible to feel our emotions after a traumatic circumstance, it is vital at some point to re-experience anything that we have shut away inside. Whatever we repress or suppress tends to have a way of building up within us like volcanic lava. At some point, we need to let it all out, and this will either happen from our conscious intentions, or as a catastrophic reaction (just like a volcanic eruption).

In order to “feel it to heal it” you need to find a healthy form of catharsis. For instance, you might seek out a therapist to speak with, journaling, artistic expression or more traditional forms of catharsis such as crying, screaming or physical workout (such as punching).

3. Breathe deeply

During traumatic circumstances, our minds tend to race and our breathing becomes shallow. The more shallow our breathing becomes, the more anxiety we feel, and the more our minds go crazy – and vice versa. To break this loop, breathe deeply from your stomach. Deep breathing stimulates the vagus nerve in the body which sends signals to the brain to calm down. If you’re struggling to breathe deeply, try noticing your in-breath and out-breath. Mindfully focus on the sensations in your body and what it feels like to be scared. If you can, try to become curious about what is happening in your mind and body. Breathing deeply and paying mindful attention helps to create more space inside of you to calm down and become balanced again.

4. Go slowly

Working, moving, and speaking quickly tends to add to the stress we feel during painful circumstances. Allow yourself to slow down and reduce the tempo. Give yourself the space to process what is happening. Notice your addiction to working quickly and how it tends to cause the mind to get lost in thoughts of the past and future. Do one thing at a time, and ignore people who try to pressure you. Your health and mental wellbeing are paramount. The world won’t end if you slow down, but it will feel better to inhabit.

5. Let go of self-victimizing thoughts

When we believe our thoughts, we suffer. But here’s the thing: your thoughts don’t actually mean anything about you unless you believe they do. Thoughts are simply fluctuations of energy. We don’t control our thoughts, otherwise, don’t you think we would always choose to think happy thoughts? We can’t even predict what the next five thoughts in our head will be. Therefore, if we don’t control our thoughts, how can we actually be our thoughts? How can our thoughts be true?

The root cause of all suffering is believing and identifying with thoughts instead of witnessing them and letting them go. When we experience trauma, the mind tends to create thoughts about how terrible our lives are and begins to create an identity around suffering (known as the victim complex). The moment we begin believing self-victimizing and self-pitying thoughts is the moment we experience intense suffering. But when we notice and become aware of these thoughts, and don’t identify with them, we don’t suffer.

Learning how to access your inner strength is about teaching yourself to become aware of these intrusive thoughts and realize that they only mean something if you believe they do. Otherwise, these thoughts come and go without hassle or worry. One of the best ways to stop identifying with your thoughts is through a regular meditation practice and self-inquiry. I recommend Scott Kiloby and Byron Katie as two excellent self-inquiry teachers.

6. Remember a situation in the past that you survived

If you are struggling to trust your inner strength, try recalling a tough situation in the past that you got through. Simply remembering that you got through something difficult in the past can help strengthen your resolve in the present.

7. Ask for guidance

Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s actually a sign of inner strength! When you seek help, you are being courageous and admitting that you don’t have all the answers, which is perfectly normal. Try seeking support from a trusted loved one, trained therapist or praying to a higher power such as your Soul. If you are in desperate need of guidance, I recommend seeking out a therapist or spiritual teacher.

8. Keep in mind that everything passes

No matter how much pain or suffering you’re going through right now, remember that everything passes, everything. Think back to a problem you had in the past, perhaps five or ten years ago. Where is that problem now? By reminding yourself of the philosophy “this too shall pass” you will bring yourself out of the narrow focus of the mind to see a bigger picture.

What Now?

Now that you have explored how to access your inner strength, focus on one of the points above that appeals to you. Try to dedicate the next week to implementing whatever point of advice you choose and notice how you feel.

Most importantly, remember that self-compassion and thought inquiry are essential tools for tapping into the innate strength you carry. At first, it can be hard to believe that you carry strength within you at all, and this is because the mind tends to obscure your soul with thoughts. However, the more you become aware of these destructive thoughts, the more you will feel your natural inner radiance shine like an eternal sun. Cultures and spiritual traditions through the ages have called this inner presence your Buddha Nature, Higher Self, Consciousness, God/Goddess, Atman, and Soul. This sacred place within you is the source of all love, strength, peace, and understanding you need.

Constipation can be incredibly painful; however, it can also take a big toll on the body. Constipation is one of the most common bowel issues. According to The American Journal of Gastroenterology, approximately 19% of the U.S. population suffers from constipation, which is defined as passing hard, dry stool that is difficult and painful to move.

The definition for constipation ranges depending on which professional you talk to. Some believe an individual is typically considered constipated if he or she has passed fewer than three bowel movements per week, while others believe mild constipation begins when you don’t go to the bathroom one time per meal you ate the previous day.

Constipation can be caused by a number of issues, including taking laxatives too frequently, hypothyroidism, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and ignoring the urge to pass a bowel movement. So, if you know you need to use the bathroom, don’t hold it in!

Specific pharmaceutical drugs, such as antidepressants, antacids, blood pressure pills, and iron supplements, can also provoke bowel issues like constipation. And one of the simplest causes: dehydration! You should be getting at around eight glasses of water per day or even more depending on your body size and weight, frequency of exercise, and climate.

Physical fitness also plays a role in constipation. If you’re not exercising regularly, then you may not have normal muscle contractions in the bowel wall. Sedentary or low-exercise lifestyles increase risk of constipation and bowel issues.

Perhaps the most common cause of constipation is poor diet, especially if your diet isn’t high enough in fiber. Fiber is essential for a healthy bowel system, so if your diet is high in processed foods, you’re depriving yourself of fiber. Foods that are naturally high in fiber are those that typically need to be chewed more, such as apples, carrots, flax, whole grains, quinoa, and chia seeds.

America experiences ‘sharp increase in global negative views,’ especially among allies


The US showed the most substantial decline in approval ratings of all countries polled this year, according to Country Ratings Poll for the BBC World Service. Double-digit increases in negative views of the US came from traditional allies.

Compared to 2014, negative views of the US increased sharply in a number of NATO countries ‒ including the UK (up from 42 to 64 percent), Spain (44 to 67 percent), France (41 to 56 percent), and Turkey (36 to 64 percent), thesurvey found.

Negative opinion of the US has also risen in Latin American nations. Mexico (up from 41 to 59 percent) and Peru (29 to 49 percent).

The Country Ratings Poll, conducted by GlobeScan/PPC, surveyed 16 countries in 2014 and in 2017, asking respondents whether a country’s influence in the world is “mostly positive” or “mostly negative.”

On average, 49 percent of respondents said they viewed the US negatively, while positive views dropped by five points to about a third (34 percent).

The poll also revealed that views of the UK have gone down, especially among EU citizens.

Perceptions of Canada and Germany, on the other hand, have improved, with 61 percent across the surveyed countries saying they viewed Canada favorably, and 59 percent for Germany.

On average, across the 16 countries polled, 49 percent hold negative views of Russia, the survey found. Russian opinion aside, the only country with a favorable majority leaning towards Russia is China.

Last month, the Pew Research Center published its survey saying there was a sharp decrease in global trust in US leadership, now standing at 22 percent. However, the American people continue to be well-regarded. Across the 37 nations polled, a median of 58 percent said they have a favorable opinion of Americans.

"The happiest people on Earth": RT crew shares experiences filming new documentary in N. Korea


In a behind-the-scenes interview about RT’s new documentary on North Korea, director Natalya Kadyrova describes the challenges of filming in the world’s most restrictive nation, including trying to tell if the family they filmed were real, or actors pretending to be husband and wife.

Even getting routine footage in public places was fraught with difficulties, Kadyrova said while recalling her experiences after returning to Moscow.

“We were not allowed to film statues of the leaders in anyway except in full height or parts of their portraits. On one occasion we filmed an interview with a portrait in the background, which was a bit askew. They asked us to delete the footage, which they considered inappropriate, and film this part again,” she said.

The handlers were from a government agency tasked with monitoring foreigners visiting North Korea. They served as translators, but more specifically, to ensure that visitors observe the country’s rules, including what can and cannot be filmed. Not every foreigner is subjected to such surveillance, but the media usually are.

“We had an interpreter, who was 26 and about to get married. One day, out of the blue, he asked me. ‘What is Facebook?’ He thought it was something between a notebook and a smartphone.”

North Korea’s image conscience obsession sometimes makes westerners doubt whether what they are shown is real or some kind a “Potemkin village”. The RT crew had a moment like that, Kadyrova said, when they filmed a seemingly perfect family of a textile plant worker and her husband.

“We suspected that the man was not her husband and that the apartment was not theirs. But their kid was so natural with those parents and in that apartment,” she explained.

Another such episode of North Korea’s fixation with perfection was on show when the crew visited a farm.

“They brought us to a place, where there was a row of demonstratively good greenhouses, and there was not a soul around. Then we saw some people at work in the distance. The cameraman ran there to film those people before they were gone. They [the handlers] got very angry with us, because the people turned out to be hauling manure,” Kadyrova said.

The crew lived in the same Yanggakdo International Hotel, where Otto Warmbier allegedly stole a propaganda poster, setting off a sequence of events that led to his detainment, conviction, coma, and eventual death.

“The North Koreans we spoke to were very proud of that whole story,” said Kadyrova, who filmed before the student was repatriated back to the US, with days left to live, earlier this month.

“Most of the army training drills that we saw used enemy mannequins wearing a US uniform.”

The documentary, called “The happiest people on Earth,” borrows from the self-descriptive phrase from men and women who features in the film.

“I still can’t really tell if they were sincere,” Kadyrova said. “For Western people, who like us come and see what they are shown, it looks like a myth. As to what the Koreans think… well, you can see in the film.”
