For The First Time Ever, Lawsuit Targets Billionaire OxyContin Family For Causing Opioid Epidemic

Members of the Sackler family, who’ve made billions pushing their deadly OxyContin drug on the masses are arguably responsible for more deaths than any Mexican drug cartel. Instead of being hunted down at their plush mansions by DEA agents, they are rubbing elbows with members of Congress. Now, however, for the first time, the family is being targeted by a landmark lawsuit for the damages they knowingly caused with their products.

On Tuesday, the state of Massachusetts filed a lawsuit against the multi-billionaire Sackler family over the role their drug OxyContin has played in sparking one of the worst addiction and overdose epidemics in history. The lawsuit accuses the company, Purdue Pharma, and its heirs of spinning a “web of illegal deceit” which fueled the deadly crisis in which America currently finds itself.

What sets this lawsuit apart from the numerous other lawsuits targeting opioid manufacturers — including several against Purdue — is that it has taken the landmark step of personally naming the company’s executives.

According to Maura Healy, Massachusetts state attorney general, the suit names 16 current and former executives and board members, including the chief executive, Craig Landau, and eight members across three generations of the Sackler family that wholly owns Purdue.

“Purdue Pharma and its executives built a multi-billion-dollar business based on deception and addiction. We’re suing,” Healey tweeted Tuesday.

As the Guardian reports, the lawsuit alleges Purdue deceived patients and doctors about the risks of opioids, pushed prescribers to keep patients on the drugs longer and aggressively targeted vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and veterans.

“Their strategy was simple: the more drugs they sold, the more money they made, and the more people died,” Healey said on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Purdue issued a statement in response to the lawsuit in which they denied all allegations.

“We share the attorney general’s concern about the opioid crisis. We are disappointed, however, that in the midst of good faith negotiations with many states, the Commonwealth has decided to pursue a costly and protracted litigation process,” the company said in a statement. “We will continue to work collaboratively with the states toward bringing meaningful solutions.”

According to reports, in just the last decade, in the state of Massachusetts alone, the company sold 70 million doses of prescription opioids, bringing in more than half a billion in revenue.

“It was Purdue’s executives who led and directed this illegal business model, leading to addiction and deception to enrich a few while leaving a path of devastation and destruction in its wake,” Healey said.

According to Healey, more than 670 Massachusetts residents have died solely from the result of ingesting the Sackler family’s drugs.

Purdue, along with several other companies who knowingly pushed opioids on people who did not need them, is facing more than 300 lawsuits from city and county authorities across the country. However, this is the first one which goes after the individuals who became exceedingly wealthy from the sale of this drug.

According to the Guardian, the Sacklers being sued are: Theresa and Beverly, the widows of the brothers Mortimer and Raymond Sackler who built the company into the narcotics giant it is today; Ilene, Kathe and Mortimer David Alfons Sackler, three of Mortimer’s children; Jonathan and Richard Sackler, Raymond’s two sons; and David Sackler, Raymond’s grandson. These family members and a number of their siblings and children are collectively worth an estimated $13bn, according to Forbes, with the vast bulk of the fortune generated from sales of OxyContin. Feuding family members have mostly declined to talk about the opioids crisis and avoid discussing their links to it.

As previously reported, Purdue Pharma, under the guidance of brothers Arthur, Raymond, and Mortimer Sackler, began a propaganda campaign to push their new drug, as described in The American Journal of Public Health, “The Promotion and Marketing of OxyContin: Commercial Triumph, Public Health Tragedy.”

One of the primary missions of Purdue Pharma was to identify the doctors across America prescribing the most pain medication and strategically marketed the drug directly to them as a safe alternative to other pain medications.

According to the LA Times:

“The Times’ investigation, published in July, disclosed that for more than a decade, an internal security team at Purdue monitored doctors and pharmacies it suspected of colluding with dealers and addicts. In the case of the L.A. ring, criminals set up a phony clinic near MacArthur Park in 2008 and worked with corrupt physicians and pharmacies to obtain pills over 18 months.

A Purdue sales manager dispatched to investigate the high volume of prescriptions at the clinic found a rundown building thronged with rough men and urged supervisors to alert the Drug Enforcement Administration, saying she was “very certain this is an organized drug ring.”

Despite her pleas and additional evidence suggesting that pills were pouring into the hands of criminals, company officials did not go to authorities until years later when the drug ring was out of business and its leaders under indictment. By then, 1.1 million pills had spilled into the illicit pipeline.

These disturbing revelations came after a prior investigation that found Purdue maintained a secret Purdue database of 1,800 suspect doctors, but only about 10 percent of them were reported to law enforcement.

As doctors began to readily hand out this new drug, these high dose pills became a scourge across main street America. Drug users increasingly turned to OxyContin for the powerful high and euphoric effects, comparable to heroin, but which can reportedly last for over eight hours.

Instead of investigating the company for their overt and dangerous tactics, the government and establishment welcomed them into their ranks. Even after dozens of lawsuits exposing this corruption, in an entirely irresponsible and hypocritical move, the FDA approved a measure to give OxyContin to children.

The fact that some people are freely allowed to market potentially deadly drugs, while others are thrown in a cage for the same activity, seems to highlight that not all people are equal in the eyes of the state or the law. Hopefully, this landmark lawsuit will expose this insidious paradigm.

For the First Tim Ever, Lawsuit Targets Billionaire OxyContin Family for Causing Opioid Epidemic

Pepsi Caught Hiding Known Cancer Causing Carcinogenic Chemicals Within Their Products

Next Story

Back in 2013, the Center for Environmental Health released test results which uncovered that Pepsi had purposefully covered up high levels of 4-MeI in it’s products. The soft drink giant denied both the presence of this chemical in it’s beverages and the fact that it was dangerous. 4-MeI, short for 4-Methylimidazole is a compound that comes from the “caramel colouring” and is a known carcinogen.

Since this discovery, Pepsi has fought against complying with the California state requirements, a part of the Proposition 65 requirements to label anything containing any carcinogenic compounds. Diet Pepsi, Pepsi One and regular Pepsi all contain this chemical.

A settlement in a class action lawsuit against Pepsi has gained approval from a California judge, the settlement ensures that Pepsi complies to ensuring their products do not exceed 100 parts per billion of the caramel colouring’s 4-Mel. The settlement also requires that the soda will be tested using specific protocols.

Pepsi agreed to these measures in another lawsuit settled in a California state court last year. The new settlement, takes this measure outside of California and brings it across the entire nation.

Pepsi Previously Failed To Warn Consumers Of It’s Known Carcinogens

The lawsuit accused Pepsi of failing to warn people about the carcinogenic chemical 4-MeI. A Consumer Reports test from 2014 showed that the 4-MeI in Pepsi products exceeded the level of 29 micrograms per bottle or can, which was in direct violation of the common law and consumer protection statuses in the state of California.

Proposition 65

California has had Proposition 65 since 1985 and requires all manufacturers to provide the consumer with clear warnings when their products could expose them to either toxic or cancer-causing chemicals.

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment had set the cutoff at 29 micrograms, at that level it creates a risk of cancer of one in 100,000.

According to a report from Mintel Leatherhead Food Research conducted in 2013, Consumer Reports said that the caramel colouring is the worlds most widely used food colouring. At the time, Pepsi tried to say that because Prop 65 refers to exposure per day rather than exposure per can, and that the average amount of diet soda that its drinkers consume daily is less than a can, there was no need to place a warning on it. Consumer Reports disagreed, however.

“No matter how much consumers drink they don’t expect their beverages to have a potential carcinogen in them. And we don’t think 4-MeI should be in foods at all. Our tests of Coke samples show that it is possible to get to much lower levels,” toxicologist Dr. Urvashi Rangan said.

Do We Need To Be Adding Chemicals To Our Food?

There are many stances to this question, but first of all, no. Often when CE covers something that involves any new discovery related to cancer causing chemicals, people are either happy to know about it or comment something along the lines of, “well, what doesn’t give you cancer these days.” The latter response is an extremely passive stance to something that we could actually have control over. It is important to realize that we choose what we are putting into our mouths and what is going into our bodies. Assuming that everything gives you cancer and there is nothing you can do about it is essentially giving up. Don’t forget knowledge is power. A little bit of research can go a long way.

If you don’t want to see these chemicals being used, then it is up to you and all of us as the consumer to choose products that contain only natural ingredients. Get informed, if you don’t recognize an ingredient on a product, pull out your handy dandy smartphone and do a quick search. We have the power and with a little effort we can avoid these chemicals altogether. The more we boycott these chemicals the more it forces these companies such as PepsiCo, and many others to either change their ingredients to suit consumer demands or quite simply to go out of business.

No, EVERYTHING Does Not Give You Cancer

There are a lot of chemicals in our food, on our food, in our water, in the air, and in our environment, however there are many things that don’t. It does require a little bit of effort on your part but you absolutely can minimize your exposure to these chemicals. Because of growing awareness and concern, there are many natural and organic companies that have sprung up that opt out of using carcinogenic chemicals simply because of growing consumer awareness and demand.

If you have the space you can grow your own garden, make your own cleaning and personal care products, drink filtered spring water, avoid plastics – you can drink sparkling water mixed with fresh pressed juice if you really want your soda fix. There is always a better, more natural option you just have to find it. We hold the power and it’s time we realized that.

“We gotta take the power back!” – Zac De La Roca, Rage Against The Machine

Be change.

DNC Just Filed a Lawsuit Against WikiLeaks and Russia for Causing Hillary to Lose 2016 Election

lawsuitlawsuit

Washington, DC — (ZH) The Washington Post reports that The Democratic National Committee filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit Friday against the Russian government, the Trump campaign and the WikiLeaks organization alleging a far-reaching conspiracy to disrupt the 2016 campaign and tilt the election to Donald Trump.

The lawsuit alleges that in addition to the Russian Federation, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Wikileaks and Guccifer 2.0, top Trump campaign officials, including Donald Trump Jr, Roger Stone, Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort and pretty much everyone else who has been mentioned in the same paragraph as Trump….

… conspired with the Russian government and its military spy agency to hurt Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and help Trump by hacking the computer networks of the Democratic Party and disseminating stolen material found there.

DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement…

“During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russia launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump’s campaign,”

“This constituted an act of unprecedented treachery: the campaign of a nominee for President of the United Statesin league with a hostile foreign power to bolster its own chance to win the presidency,”

The lawsuit asserts that the Russian hacking campaign – combined with Trump associates’ contacts with Russia and the campaign’s public cheerleading of the hacks – amounted to an illegal conspiracy to interfere in the election that caused serious damage to the Democratic Party.

We look forward to Trump’s tweeted response to this farce; we also look forward to the Democrats collecting millions of dollars in damages from Putin.

As a reminder, the president has repeatedly rejected any collusion or improper activity by his campaign. This week, he referred again in a tweet to the “phony Russia investigation where, by the way, there was NO COLLUSION (except by the Dems).”

The Washington Post  notes that the lawsuit echoes a similar legal tactic that the Democratic Party used during the Watergate scandal.

In 1972, the DNC filed suit against then President Richard Nixon’s reelection committee seeking $1 million in damages for the break-in at Democratic headquarters in the Watergate building.

The suit was denounced at the time by Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, who called it a case of “sheer demagoguery” by the DNC. But the civil action brought by former DNC chair Lawrence F. O’Brien was ultimately successful, yielding a $750,000 settlement from the Nixon campaign that was reached on the day in 1974 that Nixon left office.

The suit filed today seeks millions of dollars in compensation to offset damage it claims the party suffered from the hacks. The DNC argues that the cyberattack undermined its ability to communicate with voters, collect donations and operate effectively as its employees faced personal harassment and, in some cases, death threats.

As a reminder, Senate investigators and prosecutors for special counsel Robert S. Mueller III are still investigating whether Trump associates coordinated with the Russian efforts. Last month, House Intelligence Committee Republicans said they found no evidence that President Trump and his affiliates colluded with Russian officials to sway the election or that the Kremlin sought to help him — a conclusion rejected by the panel’s Democrats.

On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein told Trump that he wasn’t the target of the Mueller probe.

Meanwhile, as Glenn Greenwald summarized it:

18 months after their crushing defeat at the hands of a game show host, the Democrats have still published no public autopsy about why they lost or have collapsed at all levels. They did, though, just file a lawsuit blaming Russia & WL for their loss

Another hot take makes sense in the context of the the Dems’ growing fundraising gap:

And if someone still thinks this is some elaborate prank, here is the actual lawsuit:

DASH cryptocurrency and The Free Thought Project have formed a partnership that will continue to spread the ideas of peace and freedom while simultaneously teaching people how to operate outside of the establishment systems of control like using cryptocurrency instead of dollars. WATCH: Cops Ruthlessly Beat Innocent Teenager, Causing Traumatic Brain Injury, Then Let Him Go

teenagerteenager

A teenager has filed a $3 million lawsuit alleging that Toronto’s Fare Inspectors and the Toronto Police used excessive force when they arrested him. At the center of the lawsuit is the disturbing video of his arrest and attack which left him severely injured, both psychologically and physically.

The teen is known in court papers as “John Doe” as he is still a minor.

An eyewitness said she saw the Fare Inspectors violently slam the teen into a bench and then again on the ground. The recorded video starts after Doe is already on the ground. For what appears to be an agonizing 8 minutes, the young man can be heard screaming in pain. As he appears to have done nothing wrong, he maintained his innocence and was unwilling to lay entirely still as police rammed their knees in his back and pummeled him.

Doe’s lawyers say he was simply arrested for being Black. He and his mother are seeking $3 million in damages from the Toronto Police Services Board, the Toronto Transit Commission, two unidentified police officers and three unidentified TTC fare inspectors. They claim Doe was a victim of racial profiling, assault, unlawful detention and negligence among other allegations. Together with their lawyers, they filed a complaint with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), which acknowledged receipt of the following complaints:

  1. the respondent Transit Fare Inspector failed to treat customers equally without discrimination
  2. the respondent Transit Fare Inspector assaulted a TTC customer
  3. the respondent Transit Fare Inspector was otherwise uncivil to a member of the public
  4. the respondent Transit Fare Inspector acted in a disorderly manner or in a manner prejudicial to discipline or likely to bring discredit upon the reputation of the TTC
  5. the respondent Transit Fare Inspector used unauthorized force on a TTC customer

The Fare Inspector who initiated contact with Doe has been placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation takes place.

The teen and his mother claim the attack was unprovoked. Hugh Scher, one of the attorney’s advocating for the family said, He was suddenly and without warning attacked and thrown to the ground by TTC fare inspectors despite crying for help, held there, not told what was happening.”

Scher said the TTC Fare Inspectors, “held his right arm behind his back, and kneeled, sat and held on his back and his legs,” which resulted in severe injuries. Scher said Doe “noticeably suffered a head injury,” but was not offered any medical assistance.

At no time did any of the defendants take steps to advise medical personnel of the nature of the force (use)…or of the injuries he sustained,” Scher said.

According to the Toronto Star, the teen’s list of injuries are extensive and quite severe:

“The list of physical damages include traumatic brain injury, injuries to his head, neck and shoulders. The half-hour ordeal of pain and public humiliation also left the teen suffering from anxiety and depression, nightmares and flashbacks, blurred vision and debilitating headaches.”

Despite being taken into custody by no less than seven TTC Fare Inspectors and Police officers, the teen was not charged with any TTC infraction or crime. His lawyers contend his fare had indeed been paid and that he was targeted because of his ethnicity.

In the video, bystanders can be seen and heard pleading with the TTC authorities to simply place the teen in handcuffs and end his torture. Several bystanders began cursing at the TTC Fare Inspectors for their treatment of the teen.

David Shellnut, Doe’s other lawyer, said that he believes the effect of the incident on bystanders was traumatic. “Citizens of Toronto and TTC passengers were so distraught with what they saw, they wanted to ensure this young man was home safe,” he said.

In fact, several of the witnesses accompanied the young man all the way home once he was released by TTC Inspectors and the Toronto Police.

Watch video footage of the incident below:

Immune systems go haywire when mice are fed fast food, causing an "explosion" of inflammation

Image: Immune systems go haywire when mice are fed fast food, causing an “explosion” of inflammation

(Natural News)
Fast food is unhealthy; it’s loaded with salt, sugar and fat — and a whole lot of calories. It’s often pretty low in essential nutrients, as well. It’s well documented that fast food should be consumed in moderation, if at all. Indeed, most people know that takeaway meals aren’t ideal, but a recent study has shed light on just how bad going to the drive-thru really is for your health.

As it turns out, fast food doesn’t just contribute to inflammation and disease: It can actually provoke lasting (and damaging) changes to your immune system. Eating a diet laden with refined sugars, saturated fat and salt actually promotes the immune system to act as if there is an infection somewhere in the body, according to lead researcher Dr. Eicke Latz. Dr. Latz is the Director of the Institute for Innate Immunity of the University of Bonn.

To conduct their research, Latz and his team fed a group of mice a simulated “Western diet” for a whole month. This means the mice were fed food loaded with sugar, salt and fat — and were given very little fruits or vegetables.

Annette Christ, another study author, commented on their findings. She explained, “The unhealthy diet led to an unexpected increase in the number of certain immune cells in the blood of the mice, especially granulocytes and monocytes.”

“This was an indication for an involvement of immune cell progenitors in the bone marrow,” Christ added.

As Dr. Latz contends, it’s well-known that diet can contribute to inflammation, but his team’s findings regarding the immune system are certainly novel in their own right. In an interview with DW.com, Dr. Latz said that the diet-mediated changes to the immune system exhibited by the mice became noticeable within a matter of days.

“So you can see that the blood cells start to grow in a certain direction, the bone marrow makes more monocytes and neutrophils – immune cells. And you see a lot of cytokines, these are mediators that immune cells make to alert other immune cells that there’s something going on. So it looked like an infection,” Dr. Latz explained.

He noted further that it took a very long time for the rodents’ immune systems to calm down. Even after being off their “Western” food for four weeks, the researchers could still see activated immune cells present in their bodies, waiting for potential triggers.

Dr. Latz noted, “After an infection, the body’s defenses remain in a kind of alarm state, so that they can respond more quickly to a new attack.” It would seem that in the presence of an overly processed and minimally nutritious diet, similar reactions in the immune system occur.

In the fast food nation, it should really come as no surprise that our bodies literally view the consumption of fast food as a precursor to imminent disease: Research has shown that some 45 percent of cardio-metabolic deaths were directly attributed to (you guessed it) poor diet.

But that’s not all: Junk food diets have been linked to a staggering number of early deaths across the board. In late 2017, a shocking study by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington found that 1-out-of-5 deaths could be attributed to eating a diet bereft of nutrients and loaded with toxic ingredients.

UK’s unscientific cannabis laws causing more harm than ever

cannabis

Nearly all cannabis on Britain’s streets is now super-strength skunk that could be fuelling the rise in mental health problems, scientists have warned.

Researchers at King’s College London tested almost 1,000 police seizures from Kent, Derbyshire, Merseyside, Sussex and the capital in 2016 and found 94 per cent were of a dangerously high potency.

Comment: Vodka is ‘high potency’ but we don’t label it as ‘dangerously’ so. Considering cannabis is still criminalised it makes sense for it to be high potency, and smokers would, as you would do with vodka, use less.

In 2005 just 51 per cent of cannabis sold on the street was sinsemilla, also known as skunk.

Dr Marta Di Forti, Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist at King’s College warned that the powerful drug placed Britain’s 2.1 million cannabis users at risk of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, psychosis, delusions and hallucinations.

‘The increase of high-potency cannabis on the streets poses a significant hazard to users’ mental health, and reduces their ability to choose more benign types,’ she said.

“It is of concern that 94 per cent of seized cannabis is now of skunk type as this potentially could increase the number of people using it and consequently the number of people experiencing harm.

“Regular users of high-potency cannabis carry the highest risk for psychotic disorders, compared to those who have never used cannabis.”

Comment: Alcohol causes multiple times more harm and it’s implicated in more cases of people suffering from psychiatric disorders.

A selection of skunk seized by British police forces in 2016

The researchers also found that in normal cannabis resin, the average concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the main psychoactive component – had risen by 50 per cent since 2005, from four per cent to six per cent.

In contrast, the ratio of antipsychotic cannabidiol (CBD), which helps mitigate the drug’s psychoactive effects, had fallen dramatically.

Skunk has around 14 per cent THC and is more dangerous because it contains very small amount of CBD.

In 2015 Kings College showed that in South London, 24 per cent of new cases of psychosis could be attributed to skunk use. Researchers now fear that the countrywide problem could be partly responsible for the growing number of mental health issues in Britain.

Latest figures shows there were 7,545 hospital admissions in 2016/2017 for drug-related mental health and behavioural disorders, 12 per cent higher than in 2006/2007.

There were also 14,053 admissions for poisoning by illegal drugs last year, a 40 per cent increase compared to a decade earlier.

Comment: They’re seeing similar statistics in the US but this has nothing to do with cannabis, of which there has never been a documented case of death by overdose.

Cannabis resin was also found to be stronger

Ian Hamilton, Lecturer in Mental Health, University of York, said: “If these seized samples are representative then it suggests that apart from the dominance of skunk in the UK market, it also seems that resin has increased in strength, as this analysis shows that some resin samples were nearly three times stronger than those seized back in 2005.

“So even if people are trying to source lower potency cannabis they are unable to.

“If the cannabis market is saturated with higher potency cannabis this increases the risk of younger and more naive users developing problems as they are less likely to adjust the amount of cannabis they ingest than more experienced users.”

Comment: Why are they less likely to adjust the amount? What evidence do they have for this statement? It’s actually contrary to expected human behaviour.

Prof Valerie Curran, Professor of Psychopharmacology, UCL, said: “These findings have implications for the rising numbers of young people who are becoming addicted to cannabis.

Comment: Cannabis has never been shown to be addictive, at least pharmacologically – but then Bingo can be addictive: After months of deliberation the WHO declares medical marijuana has no public health risks and should not be withheld from patients

“Evidence from our own previous research at UCL suggests that high potency varieties are more likely to lead to addiction, so if the market is dominated by these varieties then this inevitably puts more people at risk of addiction.”

The research was published in the journal Drug Testing and Analysis.

Yellowstone: 200 quakes in just 10 days after warning that magma is causing strain on the surface

A new swarm of earthquakes has cropped up at the Yellowstone supervolcano, with more than 200 small temblors detected in the last 10 days alone.

According to experts with the US Geological Survey, the latest swarm began on February 8 in a region roughly eight miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana – and, it’s increased dramatically in the days since.

But for now, scientists say there’s no reason to worry.

While the earthquakes are likely caused by a combination of processes beneath the surface, the current activity is said to be ‘relatively weak,’ and the alert level at the supervolcano remains at ‘normal.’

Yellowstone is home to several faults, and has a long history of seismic activity. As natural processes occur beneath the surface and ‘stress effects’ from past events continue to maintain their hold, the area remains a ‘hotbed of seismicity and swarm activity,’ according to USGS

On left, a map of Yellowstone earthquakes from 1973 – 2017 is shown, with red circles illustrating all of the quakes. Blue shows quakes that were part of swarms.

The current swarm is shown on the right (red circles), compared to the location of last summer's swarm (gray)

According to the USGS, the new swarm is occurring in about the same location as the Maple Creek swarm last summer, which brought roughly 2,400 earthquakes in a four-month span.

The University of Utah Seismograph Stations picked up the first quakes just over a week ago, counting more than 200 as of February 18.

But, the experts say there are likely many more that have gone undetected.

‘The present swarm started on February 8, with a few events occurring per day,’ according to USGS.

‘On February 15, seismicity rates and magnitudes increased markedly. As of the night of February 18, the largest earthquake in the swarm is M2.9, and none of the events have been felt. All are occurring about 8 km (5 mi) beneath the surface.’

Yellowstone is home to several faults, and has a long history of seismic activity.

As natural processes occur beneath the surface and ‘stress effects’ from past events continue to maintain their hold, the area remains a ‘hotbed of seismicity and swarm activity,’ according to USGS.

‘Swarms reflect changes in stress along small faults beneath the surface, and generally are caused by two processes: large-scale tectonic forces, and pressure changes beneath the surface due to accumulation and/or withdrawal of fluids (magma, water, and/or gas),’ USGS explains.

‘The area of the current swarm is subject to both processes.’

The current activity, however, is likely no cause for worry.

As the experts explain, earthquake swarms are a common phenomenon at Yellowstone, and account for more than 50 percent of seismic activity at the park.

And in the past, they have not been linked to volcanic activity.

‘While it may seem worrisome, the current seismicity is relatively weak and actually represents an opportunity to learn more about Yellowstone,’ USGS explains.

‘It is during periods of change when scientists can develop, test, and refine their models of how the Yellowstone volcanic system works.’

But, the experts also note: ‘The earthquakes, too, serve as a reminder of an underappreciated hazard at Yellowstone – that of strong earthquakes, which are the most likely event to cause damage in the region on the timescales of human lives.’

Could an eruption be prevented?

Nasa believes drilling up to six miles (10km) down into the supervolcano beneath Yellowstone National Park to pump in water at high pressure could cool it.

Despite the fact that the mission would cost $3.46 billion (£2.63 billion), Nasa considers it ‘the most viable solution.’

Using the heat as a resource also poses an opportunity to pay for plan – it could be used to create a geothermal plant, which generates electric power at extremely competitive prices of around $0.10 (£0.08) per kWh.

But this method of subduing a supervolcano has the potential to backfire and trigger the supervolcanic eruption Nasa is trying to prevent.

‘Drilling into the top of the magma chamber ‘would be very risky;’ however, carefully drilling from the lower sides could work.

Even besides the potential devastating risks, the plan to cool Yellowstone with drilling is not simple.

Doing so would be an excruciatingly slow process that one happen at the rate of one metre a year, meaning it would take tens of thousands of years to cool it completely.

And still, there wouldn’t be a guarantee it would be successful for at least hundreds or possibly thousands of years.

Medical marijuana is causing a dip in alcohol sales: Researchers confirm a correlation

Image: Medical marijuana is causing a dip in alcohol sales: Researchers confirm a correlation

(Natural News)
Have you ever wondered what legalizing medical marijuana in your state could do to alcohol sales? A group of researchers used that question as the basis of a new study that they conducted, and now they have an actual answer. According to the group of researchers, which hailed from two U.S. colleges and one Peruvian university, there was a noticeable decrease in the sales of alcohol in states where medical marijuana was legal. And what’s more, this appeared to be true, no matter what the state they examined.

The researchers gathered the data they needed for their study by analyzing publicly available data on 90 different alcohol chain stores from the year 2006 to 2015, according to one report. Then they took their data and contrasted the changing trends with the information from the medical marijuana laws of individual states. In the end, they found that there were “significant reductions” in alcohol sales in all states where medical marijuana had been legalized.

According to the authors, a possible reason for this is that the medical marijuana is being used as a clear substitute for alcohol, mainly since it’s able to offer similar effects to its users. It’s not clear whether or not any legislators were aware that legalizing medical marijuana would have this kind of effect, but the data shows that indeed it does.

The researchers note in the text of their study that they have some remarkable data to back up their conclusions. “Remarkably,” they said, “our findings are quite robust to a broad array of tests.”

Legal medical marijuana was found to be particularly damaging to wine sales in particular, which suffered as much as a 16.2 percent reduction in sales. This was markedly worse than the sales dip for beer, which dropped 13.8 percent in sales.

In counties that are located on borders between two states, the researchers found that alcohol sales dropped a staggering 20 percent. And it didn’t matter much whether it was wine or beer — both of them were affected negatively in much the same way.

Based on the data they’ve gathered and the results that they’ve found, the researchers concluded that the corresponding drop in sales in states where medical marijuana is legal is a net positive. After all, it could “help focus on the positive first order impacts of pursuing cannabis legalization,” where they are likely referring to alcohol-related injuries or deaths.

In one earlier study, another group of researchers has also shown that legal medical marijuana can also cause a decreased reliance on addictive prescription medications. That is, patients increasingly turned to legal medical marijuana instead of prescription drugs that they otherwise need to take.

Medical marijuana is known to be quite effective in treating chronic pain in patients. And compared to other alternatives — such as prescription drugs and even alcohol — it can deliver much better results. This new information that links it to a reduction in alcohol sales only adds more credence to the idea that medical marijuana should be legal in as many states as possible.
