Trial Begins For Hammond Cop Charged With Killing Ex-Girlfriend

Indiana – A Porter County jury stared at graphic photos Wednesday showing how a Portage woman was found shot dead with blood pooled in the carpet around her in 2015.

“So, how do we get to this place where she dies so violently?” asked prosecuting attorney Matthew Frost.

Frost turned and pointed to Kevin Campbell, 33, sitting in a suit with his defense attorneys at the Porter County courthouse in Valparaiso.

“We get to this place because the man sitting at the end of this table, Kevin A. Campbell, murdered her,” Frost said.

Attorneys presented opening arguments Wednesday after seating a jury Tuesday in Campbell’s murder trial stemming from the death Tiara Thomas, Campbell’s ex-girlfriend and his children’s mother.

Thomas, 30, was found shot Nov. 18, 2015, in the bedroom of her Portage apartment she shared with her fiance in the Park Place apartment complex.

Although he couldn’t see the screen, Campbell, a former Hammond police officer, wiped his eyes with a tissue as Frost showed Thomas’ autopsy photos during opening statements. When the courtroom cleared during a morning break, he cried as he sat alone at the defense table.

Susan Marie Severtson, one of Campbell’s attorneys, argued that there was a lack of eyewitness and scientific evidence in the case. No DNA evidence or fingerprints matching Campbell were found at Thomas’ apartment, she said.

At the end of the trial, Svertson argued, “You will not know who in fact killed Tiara Thomas.”

Thomas and Campbell had three children together, but the “relationship fell apart,” Frost said. It was a “contentious breakup,” and before Thomas died, Campbell’s child support “expanded exponentially,” he said.

When Campbell was arrested, Portage police said there may have been a financial motive involved, as Campbell’s vehicle had been repossessed, he had voice mails from creditors and his bank account balance was $7.58, according to court records.

“It was ruining his life,” Frost said.

Svertson countered that didn’t amount to motive. Thomas was Campbell’s “first love” and the two had known each other since elementary school, she said.

“He was happy to emotionally and financially support his children,” Svertson said.

Police questioned Marqtell Robinson, Thomas’ fiance who she lived with, but Robinson’s alibi that he had worked a midnight shift before he found her dead at 7 a.m. on Nov. 18, 2015, checked out, according to testimony from Ted Uzelac, Portage police assistant chief.

“He did not murder Tiara Thomas,” Frost said.

David Duttlinger, a Portage Fire Department paramedic, said he couldn’t say exactly when Thomas had been shot, but she wasn’t bleeding much when he arrived at the apartment, he said. The responding officers and paramedic said none of them smelled gunpowder in the apartment.

After questioning neighbors at the apartment complex, no one said they heard or saw anything, the officers testified.

Campbell’s trial continues Thursday and is expected to run three days a week for the next few weeks, attorneys said

Campbell is being held at Porter County Jail without bond.

It Begins: Gov’t Agents Raid Exchanges as South Korea Prepares to Ban Cryptocurrency Trading

“There are great concerns regarding virtual currencies and the justice ministry is basically preparing a bill to ban cryptocurrency trading through exchanges,” Park Sang-ki told a press conference, according to the ministry’s media office.

The minister refused to disclose any details about the planned shutdown, but promised to work “jointly” with the government task force.

Earlier an official at Coinone, a major cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea, confirmed to Reuters that “a few officials from the National Tax Service” raided their office this week. The source said police have been investigating the company since last year, suspecting their operations of “gambling.”

The 2nd largest virtual currency exchange in South Korea, Bithumb, was also raided on Wednesday, according to an official who asked to remain anonymous.

“We were asked by the tax officials to disclose paperwork and things yesterday,” the source told Reuters.

The ministry apparently sees virtual currency trading in its current form as an illegal activity and plans to embark on discussing the draft bill as soon as this week, according to the SBS news service.

The news comes as South Korea is turning the screw on domestic cryptocurrency trading by going after banks and exchanges.

The South Korean government announced in December it is going to ban exchanges from enabling anonymous cryptocurrency transactions and prohibit banks from providing virtual currency accounts.

On Monday, the South Korean finance regulator said it has been inspecting six banks offering such accounts while looking into a potential breach of anti-money laundering rules.

“Virtual currency is currently unable to function as a means of payment and it is being used for illegal purposes like money laundering, scams and fraudulent investor operations,” Choi Jong-ku, chairman of South Korea’s Financial Services Commission (FSC), said at the time.

In South Korea, where cryptocurrencies and, in particular, bitcoin, are extremely popular among general population, the financial authorities display a far more timid attitude, with the chair of the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), Choe Heung-sik, last month warning of a “bitcoin bubble” which will inevitably burst.

Israel begins implementing plan to force out 38,000 African migrants — Zio-watch, January 8, 2018

Israel has started the implementation of a plan to force tens of thousands of African migrants out of the occupied territories, threatening to detain those who refuse to leave.

“This plan will get underway today,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Based on the plan, nearly 38,000 migrants, mainly Eritreans and Sudanese, who entered Israel illegally will have until the end of March to leave, otherwise they will be arrested.

Moreover, the Holot open facility in Israel’s desert south, which currently holds 970 people is set to be closed.

The plan, initially approved by the cabinet in November, has drawn concerns from the UN refugee agency.

The new regulation currently makes exceptions for women, children, parents of children and victims of human trafficking, but such exemptions are temporary.

Time to Pay Attention: CDC Begins Instructing Public on How To Survive Nuclear War

This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that they will be holding a briefing which is designed to instruct the public on how to prepare for a nuclear war. A post on the agency’s website said that the briefing will be taking place on January 16th at the Alexander D. Langmuir Auditorium in Atlanta Georgia. The briefing will be hosted by a number of CDC representatives including Dan Sosin, Robert Whitcomb, and Betsy Kagey.

Some examples of the presentations that will be given are “Public Health: Preparing for the Unthinkable”, “Using Data and Decision Aids to Drive Response Efforts”, “Public Health Resources to Meet Critical Components of Preparedness” and “Roadmap to Radiation Preparedness.”

“While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps. Despite the fear surrounding such an event, planning and preparation can lessen deaths and illness. For instance, most people don’t realize that sheltering in place for at least 24 hours is crucial to saving lives and reducing exposure to radiation. While federal, state, and local agencies will lead the immediate response efforts, public health will play a key role in responding. Join us for this session of Grand Rounds to learn what public health programs have done on a federal, state, and local level to prepare for a nuclear detonation. Learn how planning and preparation efforts for a nuclear detonation are similar and different from other emergency response planning efforts.” a statement from the agency read.

cdc

cdc

This statement is ominous not only because of mushroom cloud photo featured in the post but also because it comes it the midst of escalating hostility between the U.S and North Korea. For months now President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have been exchanging threats, and this week Trump made a tweet suggesting nuclear force against the country.

“North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un just stated that the Nuclear Button is on his desk at all times.’ Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” his tweet read.

However, despite all of these harsh words that are heavily reported in the mainstream media, there have been some positive developments recently on the Korean peninsula. This week it was reported that a line of communication was opened between north and south Korea and that peace talks have been scheduled between the two countries.

Kim Jon Un has expressed interest in making peace before the coming Winter Olympic games to be hosted in South Korea.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the North Korean regime’s establishment, and the South will host the Winter Games. This year holds significance for the two Koreas.

“The Winter Games to be held in South Korea will be a good occasion for the country. We sincerely hope that the Winter Olympics will be a success. We have the readiness to take various steps, including the dispatch of the delegation,” Kim Jong Un said.

As TFTP recently reported, China has made similar moves to prepare their citizens for the prospect of a nuclear holocaust.

Revealing the extreme direness of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, a state-run Chinese media outlet based in a province bordering North Korea and Russia — the Jilin Daily — published a “common sense” guide for surviving a nuclear war, according to Reuters.

Although the full-page article of guidelines doesn’t specifically mention North Korea, the warning was clearly a result of the increasing tensions between a nuclear-armed DPRK, and the United States.

The influential Chinese state-run Global Times described the article as a public service announcement due to the situation on the Korean peninsula.

The Chinese government has previously said that they reject military intervention, but in the event that the U.S. launches a preemptive strike on North Korea – the Chinese military WILL intervene in defense of the North.

Make no mistake that the world is teetering on the brink of an extreme nuclear catastrophe.

It’s definitely time to pay attention!

Intelligence Contractor: CIA Director Says World War 3 Begins in ’12 Weeks’

warwar

The current tensions and saber rattling with North Korea could be coming to a head—which would inevitably kick off world war III—by as early as March 20, 2018, according to intelligence insider, James Rickards.

Rickards, who has worked closely with U.S. intelligence agencies over the last two decades, was once asked to simulate asymmetric economic attacks on the U.S. financial system and is an expert at escalation scenarios and end games. Rickards notes that we should expect this war in the next 12 weeks, because “the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency told me,” writes Rickards.

The most important financial or geopolitical issue in the world today is a coming war between the U.S. and North Korea, probably in the next twelve weeks.

How can I be so sure about the timing? The Director of the Central Intelligence Agency told me.

In a private conclave in Washington DC on October 20, 2017, CIA Director Mike Pompeo told a small think tank group (including me) that it would be imprudent to assume it would take North Korea more than ‘five months’ to have a reliable arsenal of nuclear-armed ICBM missiles. These could strike U.S. cities and kill millions of Americans.

Five months from October 20, 2017 is March 20, 2018. That’s an outside date but the war will likely begin before then.

While Rickards claims could be dismissed as hearsay, they are backed up by recent public admissions from top generals.

Just last week, Marine Corps commandant Gen. Robert Neller warned US troops stationed in Norway that a war is coming.

“I hope I’m wrong, but there’s a war coming,” Neller told them. “You’re in a fight here, an informational fight, a political fight, by your presence.”

It’s not only US military officials echoing these ominous predictions of war either. Chinese General Wang Gongguang also said that war will be likely before March.

“The war on the Korean Peninsula might break out anytime between now and March next year,” Wang told the Global Times, adding that “China should be psychologically prepared for a potential Korean war, and the Northeast China regions should be mobilized for that.”

As TFTP reported earlier this month, revealing the extreme direness of the situation on the Korean Peninsula, a state-run Chinese media outlet based in a province bordering North Korea and Russia — the Jilin Daily — published a “common sense” guide for surviving a nuclear war.

China is not the only state in Southeast Asia to issue guidelines for surviving a nuclear attack, as both Japan and South Korea have carried out emergency exercises and issued similar guidelines.

Make no mistake, a preemptive strike on North Korea will set off a global chain of events propelling the world’s superpowers into world war. The Chinese government has previously said that they reject military intervention, but in the event that the U.S. launches a preemptive strike on North Korea – the Chinese military WILL intervene in defense of the North.

Sadly, this entire scenario has been escalated to this point by those who claim to want peace.

For decades, the insane dictatorship that is North Korea has been making hollow threats — none of which they have ever carried out since the Korean war. Since the Korean War, North and South Korea have engaged in incursions and sabotage within each other’s respective countries, but North Korea has never attacked anyone else since.

As Ron Paul pointed out, the fact that North Korea is not an actual threat to the US is of no interest to those buying into the fear mongering war propaganda. Even the non-interventionists who supported Trump are buying into the sheer apocalyptic lunacy that would be a war with North Korea.

“The propagandists are winning,” said Paul. Indeed they are and now, we have evidence that their warmongering insanity could have dire repercussions for the entire planet.

Until these hard truths are faced by the citizens of this country, we will continue to aggressively antagonize and provoke other countries like North Korea until one of these psychopaths — with their finger on the ‘red button’ — kicks off a global nuclear holocaust.

Being antiwar is not some cowardly stance by peaceniks and hippies, it is the only way to ensure humanity’s future on this planet.

Peace is not only the goal, but it is the only effective path by which that goal is reached.

Russia begins development of Syrian bases to host nuclear warships & warplanes

The bases in Tartus and Khmeimim are among a handful of military installations Russia has in foreign nations. Earlier this year, Russia and Syria finalized an agreement regulating the presence of Russian troops in Syria. Khmeimim Airbase, located near Latakia, and the naval site in the port city of Tartus have both been handed over to Russia for 49 years lease-free, and with a condition of automatic extension unless either country chooses to terminate the deal. The Russian parliament ratified the Khmeimim deal in July and the Tartus deal on Tuesday.

Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported on Tuesday that the details of the deployment and development of the two sites had been authorized by President Vladimir Putin last week. “We have started the process of formation of our permanent forces [in Syria],” Shoigu said at a ministry meeting.

Russia has been flying sorties from Khmeimim since 2015, when its Syria anti-terrorist campaign started. The site in Tartus has been operating since the 1970s, but was a small facility meant for resupplying Soviet and later Russian ships. Officially dubbed a “material-technical support point” in naval nomenclature, it is not fitted to dock or repair larger ships.

The Russian Navy, however, reportedly intends to expand the facility significantly. Under the agreement with Syria, the future base would be allowed to host up to 11 Russian warships, including those with a nuclear power plant. At the moment there is only one Russian nuclear-propelled military surface ship, the 24,000-ton battlecruiser ‘Pyotr Velikiy’, although Russia will soon have a nuclear icebreaker – albeit which is unlikely to be given a mission in the Mediterranean – while a brand new Lider-class destroyer project is at the design stage.

Such a big infrastructure project is likely to require significant investment of capital and time, so details of the navy’s plans for Tartus may be less grandiose than expected. The port, however, has already received attention from the Russian military, which used it as a logistics point in supplying the Khmeimim base over the two years of operations. Last year the approach to the piers was deepened by engineers to allow faster serving of transport ships.

Russia’s immediate plans for the two Syrian facilities appear straightforward enough, as indicated by the remarks of Frantz Klintsevich, the chair of the Senate Defense and Security Committee. “The personnel and the hardware will be ready pretty soon, no problem with that. The infrastructure development will take no more than a year,” he told Interfax news agency’s military department.

Earlier this month, President Putin ordered a partial withdrawal of Russian troops from Syria, saying the defeat of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) meant that a smaller footprint would be required in the country.

WATCH: Cops Beat Unarmed Man to Near Death With Batons ‘Like Rodney King’ – Hearing Begins

hearinghearing

San Francisco, CA – A preliminary hearing began Monday for two former Alameda County Sheriff’s Department officers accused of excessive force after a video showing their savage assault went public.

Pulling no punches, Public Defender Jeff Adachi said the encounter was “reminiscent of Rodney King,” and excessive force was clearly used by the two deputies. But excessive force is only part of their problem.

The video was released by the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, after being contacted by witnesses to the vicious attack. Months later, some of those witnesses came forward with claims that the cops bribed them not to say anything and that the deputies took a “trophy photo” of their victim, Stanislav Petrov.

At the 7-minute mark in the video, you can see a deputy posing with the bloodied man for his “trophy” photo.

In the video, deputies Luis Santamaria and Paul Wieber are seen chasing Petrov down an alley when Petrov decidedly stops and surrenders. Petrov is then shoved to the ground and severely beaten about the head and body with police batons. His attorney, Mike Haddad, said that his client suffered a concussion and broke nearly every finger bone in his hands.

For this vicious assault, in April of this year, Petrov received a $5.5 million settlement.

“We said we were going to hold Alameda County and the involved deputies accountable and we did,” Haddad said. “This result should serve as a deterrent to law enforcement officers who would abuse their authority and beat a man who was trying to surrender, as these deputies did.”

When speaking about the homeless witnesses who were bribed by the cops to remain silent, Haddad said, “We’ve learned from witnesses that they stole a valuable gold necklace from Stanislav and then they gave it to these witnesses who saw what happened to basically bribe them and silence them.”

Jerome Allen and his wife Haley Harris were living in a tent on the corner during the beating that night.

KTVU reports:

“They came up to me and the first thing they said was did you like the show?” said Allen. Allen said two deputies approached him. One of them handed him some items that belonged to Petrov. “The other cop came around the corner and said, ‘Hey, I found something: don’t spend it all in one spot.’ And he passed me a very nice gold chain with a large medallion cross on it, with diamonds, Turkish gold.”

Harris drew KTVU Fox 2’s Tara Moriarty a picture of the medallion which the couple hawked for $1,500. They said they spent the money on food, clothes and shoes. We found what appears to be the missing necklace on Petrov’s Facebook page.

Allen said he was taken aback by the deputy’s offering. “At first I look around, ‘Is this being recorded or something?’ You know, like they were trying to set me up or something? And I’m like, well, they want me to be quiet; they want me to not say something about that ass whooping they just gave him.”

This gold chain was later seen in the officer’s hand on the surveillance video—confirming their story.

Aside from the man’s jewelry, the deputy gave the homeless couple money, crystal meth, and some Newport cigarettes.

After the department found out about the bribe, the officer in question was suspended and is no longer with the department. However, former deputy Sean Osborne has never been charged criminally in spite of the damning evidence against him.

“This is absolutely unacceptable, if true, it will not be tolerated,” Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson told reporters last year. “They are no better than the criminals they arrest, if these allegations are true.”

“Nobody bribes witnesses when they’re innocent,” said Haddad. And judging from when the officers wrote their reports, they are clearly not innocent.

Haddad noted that the deputies obviously wrote their reports after they had seen the video so they could get their stories straight.

“The deputies waited four days to write their reports,” said Haddad, “when their policy requires the reports to be completed by the end of shift.”

Deputies Luis Santamaria and Paul Wieber both wrote in their reports that they were “exhausted and dizzy” yet Wieber is the department’s fitness champion and can be seen on the agency’s Facebook page with trophies, posing with Sheriff Greg Ahern, reports KTVU.

It is important to note that Petrov was witnessed in a stolen car and led police on a low-speed 30-minute chase before he was beaten. He also rammed a police cruiser in the process. However, he had surrendered prior to this assault.

The deputies attempted to justify their actions by saying their adrenaline was rushing after this chase, but their brutal force on a surrendering man was over the top.

“The problem with that argument is that this is America and this is not a country where the government can get away with beating someone with steel batons on their head without any due process,” Haddad said, pointing out the flawed justification used by these officers.

There is also the existence of another video that is the subject of the investigation. In spite of both officers turning off their body cameras prior to the beating, one of them accidentally started recording during the assault, and the officer had no idea.

“That body cam was inadvertently put on when Deputy Wieber tackled Mr. Petrov,” explained Sgt. Ray Kelly, “and it was not discovered until after those reports were written.”

“It tarnishes my badge, it tarnishes everybody’s badge and we don’t like it,” declared Sgt. Nelson.

Hopefully, as this trial gets underway, these two abusive cops are held accountable and serve as an example to other police that savagely beating a surrendering person as if you are the judge, jury, and executioner—will not be tolerated.

“The Cover-Up Begins To End”: Judicial Watch Hints At Explosive New Clinton-Lynch Tarmac Docs

Back on June 29, 2016, Obama’s Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, tried to convince us that the following ‘impromptu’ meeting between herself and Bill Clinton at the Phoenix airport, a private meeting which lasted 30 minutes on Lynch’s private plane, was mostly a “social meeting” in which Bill talked about his grandchildren and golf game.  It was not, under any circumstances, related to the statement that former FBI Director James Comey made just 6 days later clearing Hillary Clinton of any alleged crimes related to his agency’s investigation.

Not surprisingly, following the above media clip several concerned watchdog groups filed FOIA requests seeking any and all DOJ and/or FBI documents related to what was either (i) a really poorly timed meeting, in the best case, or (ii) a clear attempt by a former President of the United States to apply leverage over the current Attorney General to obstruct justice and get his wife elected President, in the worst case.

After originally being told by the FBI there were no documents to produce in response to their July 2016 FOIA request, Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton was subsequently told in October 2017 that the FBI had simply overlooked 30 pages worth of relevant docs…30 pages which Fitton now says will mark the “beginning of the end” of the DOJ’s “cover-up” when they’re released this Thursday.

FBI Hid Clinton/Lynch Tarmac Meeting Records. But the cover-up begins to end — thanks to @JudicialWatch — the day after tomorrow. @RealDonaldTrump needs to clean house at FBI/DOJ.

Of course, Fitton expressed his frustration with the botched FOIA response back in October after describing the FBI as “out of control” and saying it’s “stunning that the FBI ‘found’ these Clinton-Lynch tarmac records only after we caught the agency hiding them in another lawsuit.”  Per Judicial Watch:

“The FBI is out of control. It is stunning that the FBI ‘found’ these Clinton-Lynch tarmac records only after we caught the agency hiding them in another lawsuit,” stated Judicial Watch Tom Fitton. “Judicial Watch will continue to press for answers about the FBI’s document games in court. In the meantime, the FBI should stop the stonewall and release these new records immediately.”

This case has also forced the FBI to release to the public the FBI’s Clinton investigative file, although more than half of the records remain withheld.  The FBI has also told Judicial Watch that it anticipates completing the processing of these materials by July 2018.

There is significant controversy about whether the FBI and Obama Justice Department investigation gave Clinton and other witnesses and potential targets preferential treatment.

So what say you?  Will Judicial Watch finally manage to release documents that expose collusion between a former U.S. President, the FBI and the sitting Attorney General to cover-up a massive Clinton scandal or will they simply release more heavily redacted documents that tell us precisely nothing.  We’ll let you know on Thursday.

Trial Begins for Lincoln County Deputy Facing 22 Charges, Including Child Sex Abuse

AUGUSTA — Lincoln County Sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Hatch III was a decorated officer by day but at night was a different person, a man who preyed on girls for his own sexual gratification.

That was the contention of Assistant Attorney General John Risler during his opening statements Monday morning for Hatch’s trial in Kennebec County Superior Court.

Hatch is charged with 22 criminal counts that are alleged to have occurred from September 1999 until January 2014 in Lincoln County.

Hatch has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and is free on bail. He remains on unpaid administrative leave from the sheriff’s office.

Hatch’s defense attorney Richard Elliott said in his opening statements that the case resulted from a false claim by one young girl who bragged that Hatch was the father of her child. The girl made the boast to show that she had someone inside the sheriff’s office, the defense attorney said.

Elliott said a paternity test proved that the girl’s claim was false and Hatch was not the father of the child. The defense attorney further said Hatch could not be the father because he never had sex with the girl.

The defense attorney repeatedly referred to the prosecution by the state as a “machine” and that it generated 22 charges in hopes that it could get even a few convictions. He said the charges by the state allege time frames so vague that it is impossible for his client to provide alibis.

Elliott said his client does not have to testify but that he will and denies all the accusations made by the state.
He said Hatch is a combat veteran who saw service in Kuwait City and is a veteran law enforcement officer.
Hatch was named its Deputy of the Year in 2015. He had previously been a detective sergeant but was demoted prior to these allegations being made publicly.
