Feds Charge Rand Paul’s Attacker; Media Pushes Unproven ‘Pile of Brush’ Feud

The Department of Justice announced Friday that Rene Boucher, the person who attacked and seriously injured Kentucky GOP Senator Rand Paul 2-1/2 months ago, has been charged with a federal felony and admitted to the attack. Several press accounts are crowing that the DOJ’s announcement proves that the attack was not politically motivated. It does no such thing.

The press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office which had jurisdiction indicates that the alleged lack of political motivation is entirely based on Boucher’s word (bolds are mine throughout this post):

Josh J. Minkler, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, announced today that Rene A. Boucher, 58, Bowling Green, Kentucky, has been charged with assaulting a member of congress resulting in personal injury, a felony under federal law.

“Assaulting a member of Congress is an offense we take very seriously,” said Minkler. “Those who choose to commit such an act will be held accountable.”

According to court documents, Boucher and the victim are neighbors in Bowling Green, Kentucky. On November 3, 2017, the victim was mowing his yard while wearing headphones. Boucher allegedly witnessed the victim stack brush onto a pile near the victim’s property and “had enough.” Boucher ran onto the victim’s property and tackled the victim. As a result of this assault, the victim suffered multiple fractured ribs and subsequently contracted and required medical attention for pneumonia. Boucher admitted the assault but denied it was politically motivated.

Despite the clearly communicated uncertainty, headlines at several press reports claim to be absolutely sure of Boucher’s motivation:

New York Magazine — “Neighbor’s Assault on Rand Paul Was All About Yard Maintenance”

Vox.com — “Sen. Rand Paul’s neighbor will plead guilty to attack over brush pile”

New York Daily News — “Neighbor accused of breaking Rand Paul’s ribs over yard dispute will plead guilty to felony assault”

NBC News — “Prosecutors reveal why Rand Paul was attacked by neighbor”

The nation’s two primary news gatekeepers have slyly promoted the yard-maintenance meme, attributing it to Boucher’s lawyer without providing any contrary evidence:

(Associated Press)

(Boucher’s) lawyer echoed what’s long been suggested by neighbors: The attack stemmed from a dispute about yard maintenance.

(New York Times)

A neighbor of Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky intends to plead guilty to a federal felony charge after he tackled the senator in November in an assault set off by the placement of a pile of brush, the man’s lawyer said on Friday. (Though it’s really only what “the lawyer said,” the phrasing makes it appears as if the assault’s cause is an established fact. — Ed.)

Boucher would seem to have a good reason for denying a political motivation for the assault.

The U.S. Attorney’s press release indicates that “Boucher faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000.” The AP report indicates that his attorney is hoping that the admitted attacker’s claimed lack of political motivation reduces his sentence:

… “This is over a matter that most people would regard as trivial,” Boucher’s attorney, Matt Baker, said in a phone interview Friday. “It has to do with yards and the maintenance of those.”

… “It all goes to large piles of leaves and branches and yard clutter that were placed on the property line,” Baker said.

Paul suffered six broken ribs in the attack.

He returned to Washington less than two weeks later but developed pneumonia when he returned to Kentucky. Paul has since said he’s recovering well from the attack.

Baker said Friday the attack was “completely, 100 percent out of character” for Boucher. He said his client is looking forward to getting the case resolved.

Paul has previously contended that motivation shouldn’t matter in determining the punishment of a man he hadn’t spoken to in 10 years“If someone mugs you, is it really justified for any reason?”

That Paul’s attacker is a politically motivated person with strong leftist beliefs is beyond dispute — and whether the violence to which he has admitted is “100 percent out of character” is an open question.

Boucher is more than a run-of-the-mill “Socialist, Anti-Trump, BernieCare-Loving Registered Democrat,” as seen in findings posted at the Daily Caller on November 4:

A Facebook account that appears to be maintained by Boucher contains numerous anti-Donald Trump postings.

On May 17, Boucher posted, “May Robert Mueller fry Trump’s gonads,” a reference to the former FBI director’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

… Boucher shared one post from the Occupy Democrats account citing left-wing academic Noam Chomsky’s criticism of the Republican party. (As reported at the UK Independent and seen in a video at the link, Chomsky agreed with a questioner in April 2017 that “The Republican Party is the most “dangerous organisation in world history”)

Occupy Democrats claims to be “a merger of the goals and interests of Occupy with those of the Democratic Party.” The Occupy movement during its 2011-2012 peak was violent and had “extremist affiliations that … (were) anything but representative of the 99 percent of Americans the movement claims to stand for.” Occupy Democrats, who are obsessed over “the right–wing Tea Party … ruthlessly pursuing its extreme agenda,” certainly consider Paul a major enemy.

Early in the case, the FBI reportedly believed that the attack was politically motivated. Based on U.S. Attorney Minkler’s Friday statement, it’s quite likely that they still believe that. Given that they would only recognize Boucher’s personal denial of political motivation, no one can claim that the Bureau has ruled it out.

The problem would appear to be that Boucher created no tangible evidence that he intended to attack Paul. Therefore, prosecutors are stuck with taking Boucher at his highly suspect word that he had “had enough” over Paul’s yard maintenance habits — a meme that the press worked hard to establish without meaningful basis during the first two weeks after the attack.

If we were instead looking at a leftist Senator violently attacked by a right-winger, there is no way the establishment press would be engaging in the language games described in this post or ignoring the attacker’s extremist sympathies.

Kremlin calls attacker of radio anchor in Moscow a ‘madman’

The Kremlin has expressed sympathy and support for Russian radio host Tatiana Felgengauer, who was stabbed in the neck at Ekho Moskvy radio station on Monday. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov also fended off criticism that the Kremlin is responsible for a lack of response to aggression against journalists. “Trying to connect this tragic incident to any other things is illogical and would be wrong,” Peskov said, calling the attack the “actions of a madman.” On Tuesday, Boris Grits, the assailant who was charged with attempted murder, partially admitted guilt. Felgengauer remains conscious and in “serious but stable condition,” the director of the hospital where she is being treated said in a statement, emphasizing that “her vocal cords have not been affected.”

Baked Alaska’s Acid Attacker Discovered, Help Identify Him!

Baked Alaska (Tim Gionet) was seriously injured at Unite the Right, RedIce TV reports.

On the way to the rally, a previously unidentified man sprayed Tim in the face with a corrosive substance. While he initially thought he had been maced, the pain and vision impairment lasted longer than expected, leading him to believe that he was attacked with a far more harmful substance.

Thanks to some serious internet sleuthing, Tim’s attacker has been found.

The identity of this lunatic, however, has not yet been discovered. But given the success of /pol/ at identifying antifa criminals, I have complete confidence that Tim’s attacker will soon be given the chance to explain the finer points of anti-fascism to inmates in one of our fine federal penitentiaries.

Please help by spreading this far and wide. Baked Alaska went to Unite the Right to peaceful rally and was subject to a vicious, unprovoked attack.

As some of you may already know, there is a $7000 REWARD for whoever identifies Baked Alaska’s attacker.

Some are speculating on Twitter that the man could be a FED alleging that they saw him later “securing the perimeter” at the car attack. However nobody offered any proof for that.

If true though, then not just the agent but the entire agency would have to be held accountable. Because this is terrorism and since when can agencies go rogue and turn into terrorists? These agencies were created to protect people not to blind them. However we don’t wanna give any credence to this theory of him being an agent because there is simply NO PROOF whatsoever yet.

4chan’s pol is already on it:

Have no fear, pol is gonna eventually find the attacker. pol has proven to be so effective even the FBI is using them for investigation clues. These people should be paid for the job they do:

Let’s bring his attacker to justice.

Turku knife attacker was asylum seeker, presumably targeted women – investigators

“The suspect was seeking an asylum [in Finland],” Robin Lardot of the Central Bureau of Investigation said at a press conference on Saturday.

The attacker arrived in Finland in 2016, Lardot said, adding that it was not clear if the man was denied asylum.

Apart from the prime suspect, Finnish police detained four Moroccan citizens, Krista Granroth of the Central Bureau of Investigation said.

An international arrest warrant was also issued for a sixth person, she added, without disclosing the suspect’s nationality.

The suspect seems to have deliberately targeted women, Granroth said, adding that both killed were women. Four of the six injured are also women, she stated, adding that the two men who were injured seemed to be protecting the women during the attack.

Two people were killed and six injured in the stabbing attack. Police shot and injured the suspect, who is now being treated in the hospital. Police will question the suspect via an interpreter later on Saturday, the authorities added.

Both of the deceased were Finnish citizens, police said earlier, as cited by Yle. UK and Italian citizens are among those injured in the attack, police and investigators say.

Finnish authorities will not raise the security alert level following the Turku stabbing, head of Finnish Security Intelligence Service Antti Pelttari said in a statement, as cited by Yle.

Meanwhile, Finnish MTV channel reported, citing a police source, that the authorities allegedly rejected the attacker’s asylum application.

Hamburg supermarket attacker was 'known Islamist'

Hamburg (AFP) – The suspect who killed a man with a knife in a Hamburg supermarket was a known Islamist with psychological problems but his motives remain unclear, German officials said Saturday.

Identified as a 26-year-old Palestinian, he arrived in Germany in 2015 from Norway but was due to be deported as his application for asylum was rejected.

Friday’s assault risks reopening a bitter debate over refugees two months before general elections, putting pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel over her decision to open Germany’s borders in 2015 and let in more than a million asylum seekers.

Merkel expressed her sympathies to victims and their families and vowed that “the violent act must be and will be clarified”.

Investigators were still struggling to determine the exact motive for the assault, which left six people injured.

The suspect “was known as an Islamist but not a jihadist,” said the port city’s interior minister Andy Grote, noting “there are indications of radicalisation”.

But Grote stressed that while there could have been an Islamist motive, the suspect also suffered from “psychological instability”.

“It remains unclear which was the overriding element,” he said.

The Palestinian suspect is being held but has refused to speak about why he staged the attack, Nana Frombach, the spokeswoman for the local prosecutor’s office said.

Germany’s interior minister Thomas de Maiziere also cautioned against jumping to conclusions.

“The jihadist ideology could be used as a justification for action that may actually be motivated by other reasons,” he said, adding that “the real motives could perhaps lie in the personality of the perpetrator.”

The attacker had entered the supermarket and taken a kitchen knife from the shelves.

“He ripped off the packaging and then suddenly brutally attacked a 50-year-old man who later died,” said deputy police chief Kathrin Hennings.

He later wounded two more men in the supermarket before fleeing, hurting four other people along the way, before he was overpowered by courageous passers-by.

The man had brandished the bloodied knife, shouting “Allahu Akbar” (“God is Greatest”) as he fled the scene, but bystanders gave chase and flung chairs to stop him.

– ‘Almost exemplary’ –

If confirmed as an Islamist attack, it would be the first in Germany since Tunisian Anis Amri drove a truck into crowds at a Berlin Christmas market on December 19, killing 12 and injuring 48.

News website Spiegel Online named the supermarket attacker as Ahmad A., while officials said he had not appealed against Germany’s decision to deny him asylum.

In fact, he had helped to obtain documents to facilitate his departure from Germany.

On the day of the attack, he had even gone to the authorities to ask if the papers had arrived. Police chief Ralf Meyer said the suspect was “almost exemplary” in this aspect.

And heavily armed police who searched a Hamburg asylum seekers’ shelter where the man lived failed to find any weapons.

– ‘Started drinking heavily’ –

At the accommodation in a leafy suburb, the suspect’s neighbour, who gave his name only as Mohamed, described him as “very intelligent”.

“He was always helping other asylum seekers with their paperwork,” the 31-year-old Syrian refugee told AFP.

But in recent weeks, he “had a crisis, he bought Islamist clothes and read the Koran very loudly in his room”.

“And three weeks after Ramadan, he had another crisis. He started to drink heavily and smoke joints… he was sad that his mother was ill and that his asylum request was rejected,” recounted Mohamed.

Ahead of elections in September, the latest assault risks rekindling the debate over the record refugee influx.

“It makes me especially angry that the perpetrator appears to be a person who claimed protection in Germany and then turned his hate against us,” said Hamburg mayor Olaf Scholz.

“What was this man doing in Germany?” the mass-circulation Bild newspaper asked.

Notre Dame attacker a self-radicalised novice: prosecutor

Paris (AFP) – An Algerian man who attacked a policeman with a hammer outside Notre Dame cathedral was a loner with a deep interest in Islamic State jihadist propaganda, the Paris prosecutor said Saturday.

Farid Ikken, a 40-year-old doctorate student, was shot and wounded by another policeman during Tuesday’s attack in which he shouted: “This is for Syria”.

He was officially charged late Saturday with the attempted murder of law enforcement officials and association with terrorists, and jailed ahead of a hearing.

He had previously been receiving hospital treatment for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Watch news, TV and more Yahoo View, available on iOS and Android.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Ikken was an educated man who under questioning told investigators he had radicalised himself over a period of 10 months.

Examination of a laptop and four USB keys found at the man’s apartment in Paris revealed a “lone wolves’ manual” compiled by IS, the prosecutor told a press conference.

Investigators also found photographs of last week’s jihadist attack in London in which eight people were killed and videos “glorifying” earlier attacks in Paris and Brussels.

“He had never shown any sign of radicalisation to those close to him, he had never been convicted, he was unknown to the intelligence services and so far, no signs of contact with anyone in Iraq or Syria have been found,” Molins said.

– Worrying diversity of profiles –

“He therefore appears to have the profile of a neophyte that the services fighting terrorism fear as much as hardened cases,” he added.

“It shows the diversity of profiles and that anything is possible.”

The prosecutor confirmed that Ikken had recorded a video pledging allegiance to IS. He had opened an account on the Telegram messaging service, but did not appear to have contacted anyone.

Other jihadist suspects in France have received guidance through Telegram messages sent by jihadists in Iraq and Syria, but there was no sign it had happened in this case.

He had approached a group of police officers outside Notre Dame and suddenly aimed a hammer at the back of the head of one of them.

Alerted by one of his colleagues, the policeman was able to bend partially out of the way, avoiding a harder and potentially more harmful blow, the prosecutor said.

Ikken was also found to be carrying two kitchen knives.

France has been repeatedly targeted in jihadist attacks since 2015.

In the bloodiest attack, 130 people were killed in Paris on November 13, 2015, in carnage claimed by IS.

France is part of the US-led international coalition fighting IS and has carried out air strikes against militants in Syria.

Around 50,000 police will provide security for the first round of parliamentary elections on Sunday.

Philippine police seek casino attacker's identity

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police say the attacker was a tall, English-speaking white man with a mustache. They say he carried an assault rifle and that he used gasoline to start a casino fire that caused clouds of smoke that left at least 36 people dead Friday morning in a sprawling entertainment complex in Manila.

But by Friday evening, police said they still didn’t know the man’s name, or why he launched his attack at the Resorts World Manila complex, only to flee to an adjoining hotel and kill himself.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Philippine police said they believed it had been a robbery gone wrong.

Police told reporters the man stole more than $2 million in gambling chips and avoided shooting people he encountered in the casino, pointing his gun upward when he fired some shots.

“He would have shot all the people gambling” if his goal was terrorism, national police chief Ronald dela Rosa said.

But hours later, the IS claimed responsibility in a statement, saying “Brother Abu al-Kheir al-Arkhabili was able to immerse among a gathering of Christian fighters in the Resorts World Manila in Manila where he carried out killing and hurting until he died as a martyr. About 100 Christians were killed or wounded.”

Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla rejected the claim, saying the attack “does not have the slightest signature of terrorism whatsoever.”

“As in previous incidents, this group is prone to claim and admit every criminal incident and label it as its own, clearly indicative of its pure penchant for propaganda,” Padilla said.

Many in Manila feared after the attack began that it was linked to ongoing battles with Muslim militants aligned with the IS in the southern city of Marawi. The fighting has placed much of the country on edge and raised fears that the IS was gaining a foothold. The Philippines has faced Muslim insurgencies for decades, though much of the violence has occurred in the troubled south.

The attack occurred at a sprawling mall-like complex near the Manila airport that includes hotels, restaurants, stores and a multi-floor gambling area. Police said that during the attack the man stole more than $2 million worth of casino chips, though he apparently abandoned them in a toilet soon after.

“Either he lost in the casino and wanted to recoup his losses or he went totally nuts,” Metropolitan Manila police chief Oscar Albayalde said.

As the gunman left, he exchanged shots with a building guard who managed to shoot him in the leg after being wounded, police and casino officials said.

“Severe blood loss from the gunshot wound significantly slowed the assailant down and resulted in his holing up in a room where he took his own life,” said Stephen Reilly, Resort World’s chief operating officer.

Dela Rosa said security video showed the gunman earlier ignoring a guard who tried to question him at the complex’s entrance. He then barged into the crowded casino carrying the gasoline and assault rifle after overcoming efforts by guards to stop him. He stuffed a backpack with the gambling chips, fired his rifle at TV screens and set gambling tables on fire by pouring gasoline onto them from a 2-liter bottle he carried, dela Rosa said.

The gunman, whom dela Rosa described as “white, with a mustache,” about 6 feet tall and English speaking, fled the gambling area and barged into a room on the 5th floor of Maxims Hotel, which is part of the Resorts World complex. He lay down on the bed, covered himself with a blanket, doused himself with gasoline and then set himself on fire, dela Rosa said. He carried no identity documents, police said.

“I saw the gunman,” said a 23-year-old casino employee who declined to give her name. “He was a tall man, he was wearing a ski mask. He was carrying an armalite (rifle). I saw him fire his gun twice, I saw him burning gaming tables. But I did not see what he did after that because I fled.”

Police were examining a car that the gunman left in a complex parking garage, authorities said. Police Senior Superintendent Tomas Apolinario said the car’s owner was being questioned and had denied knowing the gunman.

The attack sent hundreds of people fleeing through the complex and into the night. A South Korean died of a possible heart attack suffered during the evacuation, the Foreign Ministry said. More than 70 people suffered mostly minor injuries in the stampede to escape.

Family members of employees spent hours waiting for news of their relatives, hoping through the night that they had survived.

Gil Yongco rushed to the complex when his daughter Hazel Anne, a casino employee, called early Friday. “She was asking for help because she said it was suffocating on the second floor area where she was,” a distraught Yongco said as he stood outside the Maxims hotel, adding that his daughter did not call again.

Hours later, when company officials announced the names of employees who perished in the attack, Hazel Anne was first on the list of 23 employees.

Ronald Romualdo, a Resorts World maintenance worker, said he and his colleagues heard gunshots and saw people smashing windows on the second and third floors to escape.

“We took out a ladder to save them. We were able to save many of them,” he said. “But one woman I was trying to save fell from the second floor. … I could not carry her.” He said the woman was not moving after she fell, but he didn’t know what happened to her.

As news of the attack spread, President Donald Trump offered America’s thoughts and prayers to the Philippines.

“It is really very sad as to what’s going on throughout the world with terror,” he said from the White House Rose Garden. Trump said he was “closely monitoring the situation.”

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, however, made no mention of the attack in a speech he gave to soldiers Friday in the country’s south.

The unrest in Marawi has sparked fears that militants might attack elsewhere to divert the focus of thousands of troops trying to quell the siege. But dela Rosa said, “We cannot attribute this to terrorism without concrete evidence.”

Associated Press journalists Teresa Cerojano, Joeal Calupitan and Bullit Marquez contributed to this report.

This story has been corrected to show that the dollar value of the stolen chips was more than $2 million, not $200,000.
