Interview: Tycho talks Coachella and what to expect on upcoming tour

Tycho has been keeping busy in the past year, and he won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Tycho is a project led by Scott Hansen, who produces, writes and even designs all of the music and live performances. During Tycho’s live sets, a band is brought along on stage, and this year at one of the most famous festivals in the world, he showed the weekend one festival-goers brand new visuals and what they can expect on his upcoming tour.

“I have been working on doing visual work for as long as I’ve been doing music so it’s definitely a big part of the project. It’s a big part of the show,” Hansen told AXS. “The visuals kind of tell a little more of the story and kind of complete more of the narrative part of it because there are no lyrics, so it leaves a lot up to the imagination. For Coachella, I debuted new visuals for the single “Horizon” and I showed those visuals for the first time at the show so that was pretty exciting.”

The new visuals that he displayed last weekend are above.

Tycho’s music is different than most electronic music. There isn’t a ton of heavy bass, and it’s a more chill, laid back vibe, which fits perfectly in between all of the craziness that was happening at Coachella.

“Because we’re an outlier, we’re more of a break from that stuff, so we’re never trying to compete with that and when people seek it out they’re looking for that more mellow experience,” Hansen said. “That being said, I think the live experience is all about engaging in that type of energy, so we definitely try to inject more energy into the songs. We also mix it harder and distort more stuff (when they play live). We just drive the whole thing a little bit harder to make it feel more energetic. “

In addition to playing his live set on the Outdoor Stage on Saturday night at 7:05 pm, Tycho headed to the famous DoLab stage for a late night surprise guest DJ set.

“A DJ set is kind of just playing stuff that I enjoy that fits into the context. I really love large sound systems in clubs and stuff, I’ve always enjoyed that experience and it’s been something that I have been missing in the melodic component or the songwriting component, it’s always been really just trying to get people to dance so there wasn’t much beyond that,” he said about playing a DJ set compared to a live set. “I always just try to pick other artists that I feel like are doing something kind of related to what I do, but that fits the context of the dance floor.”

Tycho is also set to go on tour soon, which includes two shows at Brooklyn Steel, a new concert venue in New York and at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with fellow electronic musician, Todd Terje.

“We’re mutual fans of each other and somehow we were talking to his booking agent at the show, and he said Todd was a big fan and so was I, so we actually met and kind of hung out,” Hansen said of Terje. “We’ve been talking about trying to do a collaboration, so this opportunity came up to do these shows so we both kind of jumped on it. We’re really excited.”

“We’re actually planning a surprise for this weekend, I am working on that today,” he said. “It’s a remix of an old song then we’re going to have a vocalist, so it’s definitely a whole new thing for me.”
