In an unusual departure from its historical focus on health and medicine, the American Medical Association (AMA) is now calling for bans, confiscation, and forced registration of guns. Arguably political, the AMA’s proclamation mirrors the strict gun control measures found throughout the United Kingdom, which critics say are blatantly unconstitutional in the United States.
The AMA is not alone in the fight to wrangle guns from the hands of citizens. Representatives Ted Deutch (D – Fla), Jim Langevin (D – R.I.), and Gwen Moore (D – Wis.) recently proposed legislation weaponizing the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) to go after gun dealers. The lawmakers have proposed the Keeping Gun Dealers Honest Act, known in the House as House Bill 6075. Their proposal seeks to:
- Authorize increased ATF inspections of gun dealers to ensure compliance standards are met.
- Strengthen penalties for falsifying gun sales records, including longer prison sentences for violators.
- Add new types of civil sanctions for gun dealers who violate ATF regulations.
- Permit ATF discretion in issuing gun licenses.
- Allow ATF to require dealers to conduct physical inventories if more than ten crime guns are traced back to them.
The AMA now wants to expand existing gun confiscation programs already in effect in some states by having the federal government create an “instant” background check database, which would include anyone and everyone who has ever had a restraining order placed on them. Such restraining orders bypass due process as neither a judge nor a jury has decided whether or not the individual poses a threat or is simply the victim of someone with a vendetta or civil case against them.
The AMA now wants all domestic violence restraining orders, including ex-boyfriends/girlfriends to be added to the instant background check database to be run by the federal government. The medical association also wants to keep schools gun-free—negating propositions to arm teachers—and it is presenting specific instructions on how it wants guns to be regulated.
The association used gun death statistics as an impetus to call for the ban on “the sale and ownership to the public of all assault-type weapons, bump stocks and related devices, high-capacity magazines, and armor-piercing bullets.” Such guns are currently being used to eradicate the wild boar infestation throughout the United States, but never mind that fact, they look scary to non-gun folks and therefore, presumably, must be banned. Additionally, the AMA wants guns to stay out of the hands of anyone younger than 21—military excluded, of course—detailed in the following manner:
- Support banning the possession and use of firearms and ammunition by unsupervised youths under the age of 21.
- Support banning the sales of firearms and ammunition from licensed and unlicensed dealers to those under the age of 21—excluding certain categories of individuals, such as military and law enforcement personnel.
- Oppose “concealed carry reciprocity” federal legislation that would require all states to recognize concealed-carry firearm permits granted by other states and that would allow citizens with concealed gun carry permits in one state to carry guns across state lines into states that have stricter laws.
While all of the proposals are written to ostensibly sound like “common sense gun measures,” law-abiding Americans currently enjoy hunting, sometimes alone, and they are under 21. Some kids have grown up hunting, know how to handle a firearm, and shouldn’t be forced to wait until they are 21 to hunt by themselves unsupervised.
Private gun sales take place all of the time without forcing law-abiding citizens to get permission from their sheriff to do so. Selling grandpa’s shotgun under the new proposals would be impossible. Adding to the lunacy of the proposals is the fact that Americans cannot defend themselves when they travel across state lines.
For example, a law-abiding Arizonan currently cannot take their handgun to California to keep their families safe while traveling. A national right-to-carry permit is what is needed to ensure law-abiding citizens do not instantly become felons when going on vacation. Such freedoms are under threat if the AMA and gun-grabbing, gun-hating lawmakers have their way.
With the AMA now calling for the most restrictive gun control measures the country has ever seen, and proposals empowering the ATF to go after gun dealers, in the very near future, few Americans could hardly expect to be able to waltz into a local Walmart, buy a shotgun, and put deer meat on the dinner table. Unless, of course, they wish to be subjected to a national watch list, having their criminal, health, psychological, and social backgrounds scrutinized, and the decision of whether or not they can buy a gun be approved by artificial intelligence—hypothetically speaking, of course. In other words, the AMA and members of the government want more control over your already afforded constitutional rights.
The slow and steady methodical chipping away at constitutional rights is taking place all across the country with disastrous results in gun-free-zones, such as Chicago. Guns are banned there already, yet criminals enjoy freely killing, maiming, and injuring law-abiding citizens at will. Why? Because law-abiding Americans are defenseless against criminals with guns. Such propositions by lawmakers and a medical association—which should be more focused on expunging antidepressants and other psychotropics known to cause gun violence, mass murder, and suicides—are further proof that, as The Free Thought Project has reported, “They are coming for your guns.”
