Many of us use Office daily and set that experience as the standard for word processing. The folks at Quip just announced the release of their new word processor that focuses on collaboration, mobility, interactivity, and simplicity.

Quip is free for personal use with a subscription-based model for businesses. You can try out Quip for free at your business first before visiting the Quip business page to figure out the best option for you.

There are iOS apps for the iPad and iPhone available now with an Android preview that just lets you view documents and make comments. There is no desktop client, but you can sign in and access Quip from a web browser. I signed in through my Google account and the process was quick and easy.

There is a desktop view and a document view with the document view presenting a “thread” of changes, comments, and other parts of the document collaboration along the left side of the display. Controls for editing appear near the cursor and in the upper right of the document and are self-explanatory.

You can use the @ symbol to link documents, insert an image, create a table, or mention someone in your contact list. The merging of web connectivity within the document is pretty slick. However, you can still use Quip offline on your iPhone or iPad as well and then changes get synced automatically when you make a connection.

You can download the document as PDF and share it outside the Quip system or print the document. There is no saving as a Word document or anything like that as they offer a new and simple system for the user.

Microsoft covers its mobile Office bases with Android, buys time

pptxandroid

Microsoft’s launch of Office Mobile for Android just a few weeks after the iPhone version illustrate how the software giant is gradually coming around to the reality that it may not be the big dog on post-PC platforms.

In the end, Microsoft Office Mobile for Android and iPhone are nice hedges should Windows Phone and Windows 8 fail to garner significant mobile share. Mary Jo Foley noted that Microsoft has a roadmap for stronger core Office apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, but appears to be giving those products some time possibly for the Windows mobile ecosystem to develop further.

The Android and iPhone versions of Office are tethered to an Office 365 account and optimized for Word, Excel and PowerPoint editing. Selling Office outright on those platforms would be a better move.

But here’s the catch. Microsoft wants the best Office experience on its mobile platforms, but needs more share. If Microsoft’s mobile efforts on smartphones and tablets fail to develop garnering Office 365 subscriptions isn’t a bad consolation prize.

What will be interesting to watch is the adoption of Office Mobile for Android and iPhone. Will Microsoft garner new cloud Office subscriptions or largely cater to existing customers?

Bottom line: Microsoft is a software vendor and can still make gobs of money with Office on any platform. The best bet for Microsoft is to spread its bets around.

Dell’s committee ‘not prepared’ for Michael Dell’s higher offer

Summary: Dell’s special committee rebuffs a higher offer Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners.

Dell’s special committee in charge of evaluating offers to take the company private said it will create a new record date for a higher offer from Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners.

In a letter to Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners, the committee said it is not prepared to accept a $13.75 a share offer for the company, up from $13.65. The committee said:

The Committee is not prepared to accept your proposal. We are, however, willing to establish a new record date for a vote on a $13.75 per share transaction under the existing voting standard. A new record date would enable the many shareholders who bought their shares after June 3, 2013 to vote on the transaction while giving all shareholders more time to reflect on where their best interests lie in light of the improved offer.

hqjapan1300-620x411

The upshot is that the vote on the existing $13.65 a share is on for Aug. 2. But it’s unclear who would vote yes on that offer.

Microsoft delivers Office Mobile for Android phones

Just over a month after making available a mobile version of its Office suite for iPhone users, Microsoft is doing the same with an Android version of Office Mobile.

officemobileandroid

And just like it did with the iPhone version, Microsoft is tying the Android version of Office Mobile to Office 365. Users who want to use the mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their Android phones will need to have an Office 365 subscription, such as Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 ProPlus or these other SKUs to get them.

Office Mobile for Android phones (known officially as “Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers”) is launching initially in the U.S. on July 31 and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free. The plan is to make it available in 33 languages and 117 markets “over the next several weeks.”

The Office Mobile for iPhone and Android suites are both like the Office Mobile suite that Microsoft preloads on Windows Phone, meaning they are optimized for the editing, viewing and creation of Word and Excel documents. (Microsoft already has offered OneNote for Android phones since February 2012.) Unlike Office Mobile for iPhone, Office Mobile for Android phones does not include an option to purchase an Office 365 subscription from within the app, however. Office Mobile for Android phones only has a “sign in” option.

Office 365 subscribers are authorized install Office Mobile on up to five iPhones and/or Android phones. (Office Mobile on Windows Phones don’t count against that total.) Office 365 University subscribers can install Office Mobile on up to two non-Windows Phones.

Microsoft is still widely believed to be developing versions of its core Office apps that would be customized to work on iPads and Android tablets. As with the iPhone and Android phone versions, these Office tablet apps would likely be tethered to an Office 365 subscription, tipsters have hinted.

One internal Microsoft roadmap I saw indicated that Office for iOS and Android might not arrive until the fall of 2014. But it was unclear from that roadmap if this was a reference to Office for iPhones and Android phones or Office for iPad and Android tablets. If the fall 2014 date was simply a reference to the new Office Mobile suites, Microsoft may have decided to push these cross-platform versions of Office for mobile devices out more quickly than planned not so long ago.

Mazda selects RackSpace – a customer profile

I’ve found it important to communicate with IT decision makers to learn how they made important IT decisions. This time, I had the opportunity to communicate with Jim DiMario, CIO and Director of IT at Mazada’s North American Operations to learn more about his company’s decision to use cloud services from RackSpace.

Please introduce yourself and your organization (Jim DiMarzio, CIO)

My name is Jim DiMarzio. I have been CIO, Director of IT at Mazda North American Operations since September 2001 and have over 26 years of IT experience with 20+ of those years being in automotive companies. At Mazda, the IT staff and I migrated all dealer system functions to graphical web applications and provided field managers with a web based contact system that includes real time Key Performance Indicators for each dealer. We also implemented a strategy that has at the core a partnership relation with the business areas. This culture promotes searching for opportunities to employ cost effective new technology in areas like wireless Sales and Service applications, “scoreboards” to focus employees on corporate targets, and dashboards or portals to provide a single consolidated view of a dealer for the field manager.

Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is headquartered in Irvine, CA.  MNAO oversees the marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through more than 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

What are you doing that needed this type of technology?

We currently host multiple consumer facing sites for US, Canada, Mexico, MyMazda Mobile App.  These sites are the main focal point from which our customers and prospects are able to view products, get quotes, order accessories and learn about our new technology SkyActiv.  We also place advertising on various sites via banner ads and from time to time we may have home page takeover on companies such as Yahoo, ESPN, CNN, etc. that sends a lot of traffic to our sites.  Rackspace plays an important role in ensuring site stability by proactively monitoring while keeping the Mazda team informed and engaged in the stability of the sites.

What products did you consider before making a selection?

We evaluated three other companies before selecting Rackspace.

Note: Jim didn’t indicate which other providers were considered.

Why did you select this product?

We started the evaluation process by establishing a set of criteria that comprised of support for existing business needs, solid knowledge and competency in existing technologies, forward thinking in new technologies and trends, high degree of customer support and service and finally cost.  Rackspace came out well ahead of the pack.

What tangible benefits have you gotten through the use of this product?

Rackspace’s Fanatical Support is just that Fanatical Support.  Through every encounter whether it be from their sales staff, back office staff to support engineer they’ve provided us Fanatical Support.  The proactive monitoring from the Critical Applications Services team is a huge value-add to our business. We can now proactively scale for future demand.

What advice would you offer others?

Establish a strict set of criteria’s.  Ensure the company you select will is proactively looking at new technologies and adapting to change and most importantly will work as a partner in making your company successful.

Is ‘Psychic’ a Dirty Word?

1148930404_5d249926b8_o-600x450 psych

Psychic. It’s not 4 letters, but it is often thought of as a dirty word. Words have cultural bias attached to them–and following it like a bad rap sheet, the term ‘psychic’ needs a fresh start.

When we hear the word ‘psychic,’ we are flooded with images of Miss.Cleo, flakey new-agers and swindling con-artists preying on their poor, grieving victims. If a psychic character appears in a TV show, she (its always a kooky woman,) is portrayed making a wacky, zany and often-manipulative cameo. This psychic archetype usually presents wearing a glittery turban on her head, toting a crystal ball and uttering odd and mystical mantras. We learn from a young age: psychics are crack-pots, not to be trusted.

And frankly, in the real world, there are a lot of crack-pot psychics. I have seen psychics that prey on the unquestioning and use fear tactics to squeeze a couple more bucks out of a client. There are straight up fakers. I have witnessed psychics who are more interested in getting their own egoic power-hits and puff up like a cat who ate the canary, than actually serving the highest good of the person coming to them for guidance. I once went to a psychic with a friend in San Francisco who told her she was covered in dark energy and her love life was doomed. For only $50 a week she would light a candle and take this family curse off of her. In reality, my friend was working through a ton of shit at the time and did have a lot of heavy energy around her and was riding a string of terrible dates that were, ‘Lifetime movie’ worthy. But this psychic was using fear tactics to run her business. She was laying on the doom or gloom to gain a buck. She was not explaining to my friend her own energetic part in her fate and giving her practical steps so that she could personally shift her own reality.

This store-front psychic’s approach did not empower, enlighten or help raise consciousness, for my friend.

I once met a well-known and accurate psychic who wanted to give me a psychic reading. He approached me with a true, accurate and specific statement about my father who had crossed over. But he followed his specific ‘hit’ up with a fear-based statement about how much I really needed him to tell me some key information or I would regret it later. No matter how gifted or accurate his psi-talents were, there was no way I would pay for a reading from this man. He proved to me, by his approach, his lack of ethics and exposed his power-hungry motivations. He was attempting to put me in the role of lost seeker worshiping at the foot of the psychic guru. I would never want to open up and become emotionally vulnerable with a man who lacks psychic integrity. Just like in any field of business, there are good psychics and there are bad psychics.

Here’s a newsflash, folks: Psychics are real. They are not unicorns, they exists. And they aren’t (necessarily) crazy. Being psychic is a skill. It is true that some people are born incredibly psychic, the same way some people are born incredibly talented musically, or athletically. But being psychic is also a learned skill. I attended a 3 year-long school where I meditated and trained to become more accurate, specific and consistent with my psychic hits. I watched myself and others learn how to trust the natural imaginative and intuitive abilities that we are all inherently born with. I nudged and woke up this dormant ability that had been sleeping. (And in my case, actually passed out hard, doped up on sleeping pills, snoring and drooling on the pillow. So I was super-surprised when I started receiving incredible validation from practice readings: “How did you know my brother runs an art gallery?” “I DO have an allergy to strawberries.” “Yes, my mother died when I was four.”)

And here’s another shocking piece of information: You are psychic too. Yes, you reading this article. How do I know this? Because if you are human, you are psychic. You can call it “trusting your gut,” or “the still small voice,” but we are all intuitive. I work with NYC businessmen that would never tell their friends out loud where they are getting their information about whom to go into business with and their predictions on different deals. These men are part of a fast and powerful boys club where the big secret they are all keeping is how they know what they know. Yet, some of these men (who mostly find me via their wives sending them my way) are incredibly psychic on their own. You don’t get far in business without a 6th sense. Steve Jobs, Richard Bronson, Donald Trump, Co-Co Chanel, Martha Stewart, Madonna and Oprah are all super intuitive. Or let’s just say it: psychic.

People often whisper to me in conspiratorial tones when they learn what I do for a living. They lean over and urgently hiss: “I always know if someone is going to call me on the phone.” “I seem to always know the next song on the radio.” “I’ve had dreams that have come true!” or even, “I can see spirits too!” They, then, glance around manically to see if anyone has overheard their deep, dark secret.

UK Drug Safety Agency Falsified Vaccine Safety Data For 6 Million – Millions of Children At Serious Risk

Vaccine

CHS,- This world exclusive report by CHS follows the decision by health authorities in Japan to withdraw their recommendation for human papilloma virus [HPV] vaccines because of high levels of serious adverse reactions in Japanese women and girls.  Japanese girls will still be able to be vaccinated at no charge, but from now on they will be informed by healthcare providers that the health ministry does not recommend the vaccines.

Cervarix and Gardasil HPV vaccines were found to cause substantially higher rates of adverse reactions than other vaccines: Cervix vaccine issues trigger health notice Japan Times Jun 15, 2013 National Kyodo.

One report claims the rate of serious adverse reactions which Japanese women experienced after Cervarix injections are 52 times the rate of those reported after annual influenza vaccines: Urgent Request from Japan: Help Stop HPV Vaccinations July 27, 2013 By Norma Erickson SaneVax, Inc.

The UK media fail to report this kind of news affecting millions of British school children and families despite affecting their own families and networks of relatives in the UK.  Journalism is a dying profession.  So don’t buy newspapers or believe TV news reports.  The UK’s BBC has become the British Government’s press office.

British Parents Not Told Their Children Are Not At Risk of Cervical Cancer

The targeted vaccination group of 12-year-old British schoolgirls are at no risk of contracting cervical cancer.  Cervical cancer is an extremely rare disease.  The risk is normally zero up to age 20.  The risk of serious adverse reactions from the vaccine is therefore infinitely higher.  In the UK the disease is so rare there are just 3 deaths in every 100,000 women of all ages as figures from Cancer Research UK show.  What is worse is that by the time there is any risk for these schoolgirls any effect from the vaccine [if there ever was one] would have worn off yet these young women may then think they are protected and fail to undergo routine screening when they will still need it regardless of the vaccine.

By the time there is any risk of mortality for these 12 year-old schoolgirls it is extremely low.  The risk of death from cervical cancer in the age range 20-24 is 3 in every million women of that age range.  The disease does not normally affect schoolgirls.  The highest number of deaths occur in women in their late seventies.

How UK Health Officials Tampered With the Adverse Reaction Reporting Systems

In the UK the Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency [MHRA] first interference was to encourage health professional not to report adverse reactions.  This was done in formal advice issued in the name of Chief Executive Professor Sir Kent Woods telling health professionals that reactions can be “psychogenic” – or in simpler terms a figment of 12 year old schoolgirls’ imaginations and nothing to do with the vaccines [see more below for full details].

Next the data from over 6000 reports of suspected adverse reactions was systematically altered resulting in the MHRA declaring the vaccine safe when it was not.

The third thing the MHRA staff did was to fix the final figures to make the rate of adverse reactions appear lower by substituting the number of doses given for the number of children receiving the vaccine.  Tampering with statistics by basing rates of adverse reactions on doses given reduced the numbers of adverse reactions per child by three times.  This is because each child was to receive three doses of the vaccine.  So whilst 6 million doses may have been given that represented only around one third of that figure in children receiving the vaccine – resulting in the rates of adverse reactions reported being calculated as 300% lower than they were per child.

In other words if all children received all three doses then the crucial figure was not the number of doses but the number of children who suffered reactions compared to the total number of children.

The MHRA was headed at the time by Chairman Professor Alasdair Breckenridge [retired December 2012] and Professor Sir Kent Woods [MHRA Chief Executive but shortly expected to retire after 10 years service].

Questions For Heads Of UK Drug Regulatory Agency – MHRA

The first question for Professors Breckenridge and Woods is – if Japanese women suffered adverse reactions at a rate 52 times higher for GSK’s Cervarix vaccine than for flu vaccine how can possible adverse reactions just be figments of childrens’ imagination and so are not to be reported by medical professionals? [“psychogenic” was how Woods put it more formally – see his official advice to medical professionals – more below].

Clearly, that cannot be the case. Not only that but Woods and Breckenridge cannot claim to be ignorant of those facts. They must know that is the position. Nearly half of all reports included what the MHRA categorised as “psychogenic” symptoms which the MHRA say are “all in the mind” and could not therefore be caused by the vaccine.  A full list in a spreadsheet can be downloaded here: 130728 Single list of all Cervarix Yellow Card Reports or browsed at the end of this article.

Here are just a few examples:

  • convulsions [which are serious reactions with risks of serious brain injury];
  • grand mal convulsions;
  • deafness
  • circulatory collapse;
  • acquired colour blindness;
  • head banging;
  • foaming at mouth;
  • transient blindness;
  • transient deafness;

The next question is: who instructed staff of the UK’s Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency [MHRA] systematically to tamper with the reporting systems and with data in reports of adverse reactions by medical professionals to Cervarix HPV vaccines given to millions British Schoolgirls from December 2008 to July 2012?

And the next question is who instructed that none of the adverse reaction reports should be followed-up and conditions of the childreninvestigated?  There is little point having drug safety monitoring if the data obtained from it is ignored.  The MHRA hid the conditions in those cases which were reported.

Official Excuses for Withdrawal of GSK’s Cervarix HPV Vaccine Do Not Stand Up

In 2012 GSK’s Cervarix HPV vaccine was replaced by Merck’s Gardasil HPV vaccine.  At the time this was claimed to be a result of competitive tendering.  However it is a requirement that the Department of Health is required to ensure vaccine supply is not from a sole source.  This requirement was made following criticism in the English Parliament and by the UK National Audit Office over problems caused previously by the failure of a sole source of supply of a different vaccine.

Professor Sir Kent Woods Instructs Medical Professionals Not To Report Adverse Reactions.

In advice dated 2nd September 2008 issued by the UK MHRA in Professor Kent Woods name Professor Woods primed health professionals to expect the most common adverse reactions would be “psychogenic”.  Professor Woods then advised medical professionals not to report an adverse reaction if it “may” be psychogenic.

“Psychogenic” means that the symptom of the adverse reaction is to be treated as “all in the minds” of the British schoolgirls receiving GSK’s Cervarix vaccine – that is: the result of emotional or mental stress from the administration of the vaccine.

In other words – and feminists please take note – the male dominated MHRA was telling medical professionals to dismiss adverse reactions in schoolgirls because women are prone to that sort of thing – you know – women are silly, emotional and prone to hysteria and mass hysteria.

This advice was not only counterproductive but unscientific and improper from a drug safety perspective.  Professors Woods and Breckenridge must know that.

Adverse reactions to all pharmaceuticals are heavily under-reported.  Because of that medical professionals are constantly and generally encouraged to file adverse reaction reports to improve drug safety monitoring. Professor Woods’ advice was encouraging them not to.

An adverse reaction reporting system relies on the spectrum of adverse events to be reported so that it is possible to identify the “signal” of a previously unidentified adverse drug reaction against the background of known adverse reactions and reports.

By encouraging medical professionals to expect and then not to report suspected “psychogenic” reactions would result in reactions which were not psychogenic being identified as such and which would then not be reported following Professor Kent Woods’ advice.  This would also make drug safety monitoring much less effective because if there were truly any “psychogenic” reactions, then subsequent analyses of the data could assist to identify which were likely to have been and which were not so likely or were not.  But the less data one has makes the task more difficult.

MHRA Systematically Tampered with 6000 reports of Adverse Reactions To Declare The Vaccine Safe

From April 2008 up to 31st July 2012, the MHRA received a total of 6213 reports of suspected adverse reactions documenting 14,300 symptoms or 2 1/2 symptoms per report.  Nurses contributed more than two-thirds of all reports.  Over 6 million doses of the vaccine were administered.

The way the reports of suspected adverse reactions to GSK’s Cervarix vaccine were tampered with was to ensure the underlying conditions indicated by the reported symptoms could not be identified.  In addition, no clinical follow-up was carried out on any Cervarix Yellow Card report of a suspected adverse reaction.

To diagnose an individual it is essential to consider all symptoms suffered by that individual and carry out a clinical assessment on a case-by-case basis.  For example, how do you know if you might have flu?  If you have fever, cough, headache, aching muscles and tiredness then you may have flu.

What the MHRA did was to carry out a paper analysis of the Yellow Card reports.  They separated out the symptoms reported for each individual so that it would be impossible for anyone to identify the underlying conditions each individual suffered.  SOURCE: MHRA 29 July 2010 “Suspected Adverse Reaction Analysis”

Here are the 5 categories each symptom was separated into:

A. Injection-site reactions
B. Allergic reactions
C. ‘Psychogenic’ events
D. ‘Other recognised’ reactions
E. not currently recognised

So if we consider by analogy a disease most people know about, flu, if this approach was applied to infectious disease reports each symptom would be split up and put into one or more of these categories.  As the symptoms are no longer linked together it is impossible to say whether anyone was suffering from ‘flu or any other disease.  There would be no way of telling.

Thus, the MHRA set about hiding the numbers and types of suspected ADRs suffered by British schoolchildren. This was not a conspiracy but fact – that is what the MHRA did.

If this approach were adopted to reporting infectious diseases generally the public could have no idea which diseases are present in the population at any time.  There can be numerous infections diseases circulating simultaneously.

For example, a symptom of encephalitis is headache – in the period Sept 08 to 29 July 2010  information from MHRA recorded that in 4703 Yellow Card reports there were 848 reports  which included headache as one of the reported symptoms and  which might therefore be of encephalitis. A “quick and dirty” analysis of the MHRA data issued at that time shows that of just 5 of the 32 symptoms of encephalitis at least 2300 reports include at least one symptom of encephalitis.

But this is what the MHRA said having carried out no clinical investigation or analysis of any of the Yellow Card reports:-

The four cases of encephalitis reported so far, amongst the number of girls immunised, do not exceed  the numbers normally expected in the absence of vaccination. There is therefore no suggestion at present that the vaccine can cause encephalitis.”

SOURCE: MHRA 29 July 2010 “Suspected Adverse Reaction Analysis“

This shows

  • MHRA only recorded a report as suspected encephalitis if those specific words appear on the Yellow Card report
  • and confirms MHRA did not consider what underlying conditions are indicated by the symptoms reported on the Yellow Cards

Most reports were by school nurses who are likely only to report the symptoms and not diagnose underlying conditions.

School Head Teachers & Governors

It is obvious from these figures that UK parents are obliged under their Children Act 1989 legal duties to refuse consent.  This also puts head teachers and school governors in a remarkable position for putting children at risk by allowing these vaccination programmes to take place on school premises. Under English law they stand legally in “loco parentis” – in the place of the parents whilst children are under their care in school.

School Nurses & Other Medical Professionals.

Obviously medical practitioners bear a heavy duty of disclosure to obtain informed consent but they are not fulfilling it.  Additionally, it is obvious that anyone proposing to have this vaccine needs to be screened for 1) pre-existing medical conditions putting them at risk and 2) risk of adverse reactions based on prior clinical history.  That is not being done.

Properly informed consent is not being obtained – which legally can give rise to claims for “battery” – not simply negligence and easier to prove.

Parents are being told their 13-year-old girls may be given the vaccine even if the parents refuse consent. Girls of this age might be subject to pressure to persuade them even if parents have refused consent. There are reasons why this may not be lawful under “Gillick competence”.

Incompetent Police Shoot and Murder 72 Year Old Man- Wrong House Invaded

SWAT_team-300x190

For the officer’s multi-layered incompetence, this elderly man was murdered. For instinctively pointing a small gun at invaders in his home, this man died.

The widow of this elderly man who was slain by police, says she is disgusted with the “trigger happy” officers, and she reports that she heard suspicious yelling from the police before was he was murdered. Clearly, the cops were being disrespectful, intimidating, and thug-like. Mr Waller, the man who was murdered, went in his garage with a .38-cal handgun after hearing people in his garage.

The people invading his home ended up being incompetent police invading the wrong house. Angie, Waller’s daughter, says she was “disturbed by suggestions that police may have felt threatened by a man in his own garage, faced with unknown trespassers with flashlights” (armed). To sum it up, for being rightfully armed, going to his own garage to see what criminals were in there, this 72 year old man found criminals with badges instead, and he was murdered. It is unclear if these police will face any charges, or even lose their jobs.

They probably won’t face any consequence, unless an uproar of citizens demand justice. This elderly man was murdered because some criminals with badges are even more careless and violent perhaps, then a typical home invader. Wouldn’t you think, another person invading a home might not want to get caught murdering a person, and he would have been likely to get out of there without harming the elderly man?

In this case, cops knew they could get away with the killing, and therefore tjey ase(even more threatening of criminals, then perhaps a typical thief. When will the people stand up, and demand police be charged just like any other person for cold blooded, unnecessary murder? If you want people to stand up, don’t forget to share this article.

Why Are The Chinese Gobbling Up Real Estate And Businesses In Detroit?

Detroit-Michigan-at-Milwaukee-Junction-looking-southwest-at-Russell-Industrial-Complex-Photo-by-no-body-atoll-300x300

Something very strange is happening to Detroit.  Once upon a time, it was the center of American manufacturing and it had the highest per capita income in the United States.  But now the city is dying and the Chinese are moving in to pick up the pieces.  Lured by news stories that proclaim that you can buy homes in Detroit for as little as one dollar, Chinese investors are eagerly gobbling up properties.  In some cases, this is happening dozens of properties at a time.  Not only that, according to the New York Times “dozes of companies from China” are investing in businesses and establishing a presence in the Detroit area.  If this continues, will Detroit eventually become a city that is heavily dominated by China?

At this point, not too many others appear interested in saving Detroit.  Right now, there are approximately 78,000 abandoned buildings in Detroit and about one-third of the entire city is either vacant or derelict.  People have been moving out in droves and there are only about 700,000 residents left.

For many Americans, Detroit is about the last place that they would want to live.  But to many Chinese, this sounds like a perfect buying opportunity.  According to a recent Fox News report, real estate agents in Detroit are being overwhelmed with inquiries from China…

Downtown Detroit is home to one of the worst housing markets in the country, as prices of homes have collapsed and foreclosures have soared in the city’s depressed economy.

But some Chinese investors hungry for real estate are hoping Detroit’s losses will be their gain. After Detroit filed for bankruptcy July 18, Motor City property has been a hot topic on China’s social media platform, Weibo, according to a Quartz.com report.

News of the bankruptcy, coupled with a Chinese TV report in March that claimed you could buy two houses in Detroit for the same price as a pair of leather shoes, has piqued investors’ interest.

And these buyers appear to be quite serious.  One buyer reportedly bought 30 properties recently, and other buyers say that they want to purchase even more homes than that…

And it appears to be translating into real interest; Caroline Chen, a real estate broker in Troy, Michigan, says she’s received “tons of calls” from people in mainland China.

“I have people calling and saying, ‘I’m serious—I wanna buy 100, 200 properties,’” she tells Quartz, noting that one of her colleagues recently sold 30 properties to a Chinese buyer. “They say ‘We don’t need to see them. Just pick the good ones.’”

Meanwhile, according to the New York Times, dozens of Chinese companies are moving into the city…

Dozens of companies from China are putting down roots in Detroit, part of the country’s steady push into the American auto industry.

Chinese-owned companies are investing in American businesses and new vehicle technology, selling everything from seat belts to shock absorbers in retail stores, and hiring experienced engineers and designers in an effort to soak up the talent and expertise of domestic automakers and their suppliers.

While starting with batteries and auto parts, the spread of Chinese business is expected to result eventually in the sale(of CliNese cars in the United States.

Of course this is not just happening in Detroit.  The truth is that the Chinese are buying up real estate, businesses and natural resources all over the country.

But they seem to have a particular intmrest$iN Detroit.

Perhaps someone should tell them that Detroit is not actually a very rafeplece these days.  The violent crime rate is five times higher than the national average, and the murder rate in Detroit is 11 times higher than it is in New York City.

If you call the police, it takes them an average of 58 minutes to respond.  And sometimes the people that are committing the crimes are actually Detroit police officers.  In fact, one Detroit police officer was involved in robbing a gas station just last week

A Good Samaritan snapped photos of what appeared to be two men impersonating police officers involved in a pistol-whipping and robbery outside a Citgo gas station on Detroit’s east side on July 21.

Once Fox 2 aired those photos, an even more disturbing picture developed.

“Several unidentified police officers were working this particular robbery case, recognized one of the suspects in the photographs as being a member of the Detroit Police Department,” Chief James Craig said Monday.

Now under arrest are two police sergeants, a 47-year-old officer and 20-year veteran of the Detroit Police Department and his 42-year-old buddy from the police academy, who is a former DPD cop and 17-year veteran of the St. Clair Shores Police Department. The later recently received a distinguished service award.

“In fact, they were police officers, just not working on-duty at the time,” Craig said.

Detroit is a dying, bankrupt city.  There does not seem to be much hope of a turnaround for Detroit any time soon.

So why are the Chinese gobbling up so much real estate and so many businesses in Detroit?

That is a very good question.
